Anesthesia Essay Sample

My interest in anesthesia came about like the wounded path along a well traveled hiking trail, one of many that looks enticing and is just right, but didn't reveal itself until I got myself through the hurdles along the road. In anesthesia I am looking for a specialty that values quick thinking and detailed precision, a field with the right balance of intensity and patient interaction, and a career that can challenge me to perform at the top of my abilities.
I've known my interest in medicine for a long time; the functions of the human body fascinates me. My first memorable episode involved a nine year old me, barbeque meat skewers from roadside stand, and food poisoning. The resulting symptoms were nausea, vomiting, and altered mental status

for half a day. As expected for the majority of the population, I decided to go for it again right after my symptoms subsided, to "prove" my theory so to speak, and confirm the validity that my diagnosis was indeed food poisoning secondary to contaminated meat skewers. Since then I've applied my curiosity to the healthier, and more productive outlet of gaining a degree in medicine.
Even prior to deciding to go into anesthesia, I've been utilizing my appreciation of finer details and precision in scientific research. During my years in UCLA, I was involved in Vervet monkey studies, examining the differences in brain volumes in relation to variations in behavior. After graduation, I moved on to join a lab working on research involving the use of stem cells and protein analogous in neuronal repair for stroke patients, with a paper published in the Journal of Neuroscience. My research experiences helped me develop my skills in seeking details and multi-tasking, but I wanted to pursue a field with more patient interaction and with quicker outcome.
Anesthesia appeals to me in its balance of patient interaction with intensity of care.

I like the ability of talking with patients to find answers, and the satisfaction of reaching a solution with the team. The myriad of career choices in anesthesiology, from critical care to pediatrics, is just another added bonus to the specialty.
Along my journey through medical school, my interest in anesthesia grew. I joined my school's anesthesiology club for a better understanding of the specialty. During my clinical rotations, I trailed after anesthesiologists I've the chance to come across, talk to them before and after procedures in my OBGYN and General Surgery cases. I reached out to recent graduates matching into anesthesia, and that's when my attention was directed to your respected program. I had the valuable chance to communicate with a current RCRMC resident, and truly feel RCRMC to be the ideal place for medical training and education. Since then I've been on the lookout for the opportunity to sign up on an anesthesia rotation with Riverside County Regional Medical Center.
