General intelligence, also known as (g), is a factor that, according to Spearman and others, causes specific mental abilities and is measured by every task on an intelligence test. It refers to the existence of general intelligence that influences performance on mental ability measures.
Charles Spearman is a British psychologist that first described the existence of general intelligence in 1904. He used a special technique, factor analysis, to examine many aptitude tests where he found that scores on tests were very similar. Factor analysis is a statistical process that classifies clusters of related items, or factors, on a test. It is used to identify different sizes of performance that causes one’s total score. People that perform well on cognitive tests perform very well on other tests, while those scoring bad tend to score bad on others. Spearman concluded that intelligence is just a general cognitive ability which can be measured and numerically expressed.
General intelligence is also the ability to think about ideas, analyze situations, and solve problems. It is measured through various types of intelligence tests. ...hrough art. I have been drawing since I was a kid and I have sculpted before. It takes precision and accuracy to fully reach our maximum potential to what our art and sculptures want to look like. It takes a lot of time and concentration to apply ourselves. I think sculpting and artistry involves this intelligence because we have to be able to be coordinated, control our bodily motions, be sensitive to touch, and work well with our hands. These are all common characteristics and physical based skills that individuals with this type of intelligence can have.
I do think enjoying the outdoors exhibits bodily kinesthetic intelligence because people with this intelligence like to explore, figure out new things, and find new innovative ways to do something. These types of people are very active and like to do more than just the usual norm. It involves movement and skill.
Howard Gardner used to define intelligence as “the ability to solve problems or to create products that are valued within one or more cultural settings” (Gardner 33). The modern day human being would most likely include the words “smart” and “dumb” in their definition of intelligence. Gardner questioned the belief of only one intelligence so he created his own theory that involved seven different discoveries. He didn’t want to call these discoveries “skills” or “talents” or gifts” because those all suggested a drawback so he decided on the word “intelligence,” creating his theory of multiple intelligences (Gardner 33). Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences including, linguistic, logical/mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, intrapersonal and interpersonal, has many implications for modern education and culture.
General intelligence tends to relate to various degrees with each other (Cohen 2012). An example of this is that if an individual is good in math, they may also be good in spelling. In this weeks reading we reviewed several different models of measurement of intelligence. In regard to these theories and general intelligence (g), the theories are various but have commonality and overlap. The Spearman's two-factor theory is if a test has high correlation with other test than the measurement of g is highly saturated (Cohen, 2012). Intelligence tests have been developed by scientists as a tool to categorize army recruits or analyze school children. But still discussing what intelligence is, academics have a difficult time defining what intelligence tests should measure. According to the American researcher Thorndike, intelligence is only that what intelligence tests claim it is (Comer, Gould, & Furnham, 2013). Thus, depending on what is being researched in the test and depending on the scientist’s definition of intelligence the meaning of the word intelligence may vary a lot. Intelligence can be defined in many different ways since there are a variety of individual differences. Intelligence to me is the ability to reason and respond quickly yet accurately in all aspects of life, such as physically, emotionally, and mentally. One of the most definitive things ever said regarding the nature of intelligence was that intelligence is whatever IQ tests measure. The IQ test has been in use throughout the 20th century and serves as an accepted measure of a person’s intelligence. It is used by institutions such as schools and the army to screen people’s level of intelligence and decisions are made based on that. The IQ test consists of a series of questions regarding certain skills such as vocabulary, mathematics, spatial relations. The scores that a person gets on these tests depend on the amount of questions that a person answers correctly. The actual score that a person gets is dependant on how others in that age group do on those particular questions.
Dictionaries add still more definitions: Funk & Wagnall’s defines intelligence as “The faculty of perceiving and comprehending meaning; mental quickness; active intellect; understanding” , while Webster’s defines it as “the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations; the skilled use of reason.” While some of these definitions are similar, none of them are exactly the same.

However, many psychologists argue that there is no standard definition of ‘intelligence’, and there have been many different theories over time as psychologists try to find better ways to define this concept (Boundless 2013). Another largely debated concept is whether intelligence is genetically determined and fixed, or whether is it open to change, through learning and environmental influence.
