OITNB Orange Is the New Black is a Netflix series that focuses on the fictional stories of inmate women. The show depicts many women of different backgrounds, social classes, races, and sexualities. Sexuality was a recurrent theme in the show, and of the women explored their sexuality freely in the prison. The guards were mostly men and the main authority figure was a man as well. This to me showed a sign of dominance and expanded on social beliefs of men being more dominant in society.
Describe the different roles portrayed by men and women?
In Orange Is the New Black, women are the inmates and most of the guards are men. In this particular episode Pisctela is the main guard and he is being portrayed as the criminal. The inmates were all women and every relationship shown were lesbian relationships. The relationship between Lorna and Nicky displayed Nicky has the dominate person because she was masculine. Society always places the dominate role on the man, or in a gay relationship the person who acts more like a man. This is being shown throughout the show and many romantic relationships there was a more masculine and dominated person.
What about sexuality? Today being gay is still not completely acceptable, and the LGBTQ community still suffers from discrimination. The prison in Orange Is the New Black creates a safety place were women can expand on their sexual curiosity. Sexuality is never mentioned in the show and nobody declares a sexuality, which creates sexual fluidity. The main character Piper chapman began the series with a male fiancé but cheats on him for her past lesbian lover. I think this expands on the fluidity theme and focuses on the idea of choice. The inmates teach sexuality like it does not matter and the prison is somewhat a judgment free
