“For The Bible Tells Me So” by Daniel Karslake is a documentary style film that focuses on issues about sexuality. The film focuses on the conflict between homosexuality and Christianity and the analysing of several Bible verses about homosexuality. The film attempts to alter the minds of homophobes by using facts, science and several interviews with Christians who also have gay children. The interviews are done with five American, very Christian families and “how they handle the realization of having a gay child” (Karslake, 2007.) The film looks at both the understanding of the church, that is portrayed within the film, and the suggestion that there can only be one sexuality, heterosexuality, and that all others are sins in the eye of God. Christians understood sex and sexuality to be between a man and a woman and for the purpose of procreation. The film challenges this by giving other examples of things the Bible sees as sins because of the prevention of procreation, such as ejaculating outside of the body and contraceptives. Both of these are also strongly condoned by today’s society to prevent unplanned pregnancy and STI’s. This is directly related to Irvine’s article “Victims, Villains.. And Neighbours” about Comprehensive sex Ed. vs. abstinence sex Ed, and the debate between teaching kids about safe sex and how to use things such as condoms or birth control, or not teaching theme these things at all because this would be telling them that sex is okay as long as it’s safe, when abstinence sex Ed’s goal is to avoid sex all together until marriage because the reason we were created to have sex is to procreate and having sex outside of marriage is wrong and using any kind of contraception that could prevent procreation is... ... middle of paper ... ...uality. It attempts to persuade Christians in a very effective way that works better than perhaps facts might. I heard someone say once a quote that I think fits really well, that Christians’ fight with values and it is almost impossible to fight values. This is true and I think because you can’t necessarily fight values we have to attempt to change values and that can be much more effective with something that hits home a little more than scientific facts might. Overall the film was a very informative film for a more homophobic audience. The content was relatable and connected well with the information and discussions that have been within our society for a long time. It was a well-done film that really questions the homophobic opinions and while this is still a very real debate in today’s society the film does a great job at arguing the homophobic opinions.
There have been hundreds of articles written on Elvis Presley, as he was a prominent figure in the late 20th century; most people know Presley as the man who changed the music industry by introducing lewd or suggestive dance moves to the stage. This article, however, focuses on the southern spirituality of Presley. As mentioned in the seventy-fifth and seventy-sixth page of the journal, this is relatively unexplored territory. The article Just a Little Talk with Jesus by Charles Reagan Wilson derives its name from an old gospel song, also entitled “Just a Little Talk with Jesus.” This article begins with the retelling of the “Million Dollar Session” that occurred in December of 1956 at Sun Studios, the record studio for the now famous Presley. This session was given its name because of the worth of talent that attended; the group in attendance included Presley, Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. The five musicians played many songs together, including southern religious songs known extremely well by these five men who all came from church backgrounds. Among these southern religious songs was “Just a Little Talk with Jesus” that expounds the gospel and redemption, talking of a person lost in sin that was taken in by Jesus. It is vital to note that Presley’s spirituality was inherited and correlates to regional patterns. His spirituality and music along with the manner in which he fused the two makes Presley an “emblematic figure in southern culture” (pg. 76). For the point of this article, “spirituality” is one’s religious views that are based in one’s religious exercises and practices. The spirituality found in the south in the mid-twentieth century was far more than attending church; it permeated every aspect of souther...
In today’s society religion is a life decision that influences the choices the people in that certain religion make. One major influence that stands in the way for a comprehensive sex education and hinders Shelby’s views is her strong devotion and beliefs to Christianity. Reverend Ed Ainsworth has been a key character within the film. He is a pastor that preaches and educates to upcoming teens and young adults in the approach of abstinence until marriage when it comes to sex. With his program, True Love Waits, he is able to use a religious tactic and quote from biblical contexts to influence these uneducated teens about sex that this method i...
Born Sinner Aren’t we all sinners? We all have committed acts of violence at some points in our lives, and our answer we are human, we are wired that way or it is our instinct. People have a habit of hurting one another and it comes naturally to them. After reading Flight by Sherman Alexie, violence is a prominent theme throughout the novel. This idea of aggression is represented in many different ways, shapes, and forms.
Overall, the film effectively depicts individual stories of homosexuals and their families’ struggles that are both inspiring and a warning. If we are to ask, “What would Jesus do”, I think the Bible demonstrates over and over that we are to love, not hate or condemn. I thinks it’s time society wake-up and search for spiritual truth and let go of old stereotypes and embrace humanity.
Man has been painting since the beginning of existence. In fact, it was one of the very first methods of expression and communication ever used by humans. Art has been used to represent diverse kinds of religion, beliefs, and points of from all around the world as a form of expression that could last forever and speak every language.
Moreover, it is a palatable film. It offers a few solid laughs and will provoke some smiles; it’s a fairly typical, unremarkable comedy. While the original film had the breaking of racial stereotypes in mind, this updated version has it more in mind to have fun with them for the sake of the comedy. It is a romantic comedy that touches upon race relations following a fairly well established story-line. I would say that the one redeeming value of the film is the message of "seeing people, not color."
This movie is a wonderful production starting from 1960 and ending in 1969 covering all the different things that occurred during this unbelievable decade. The movie takes place in many different areas starring two main families; a very suburban, white family who were excepting of blacks, and a very positive black family trying to push black rights in Mississippi. The movie portrayed many historical events while also including the families and how the two were intertwined. These families were very different, yet so much alike, they both portrayed what to me the whole ‘message’ of the movie was. Although everyone was so different they all faced such drastic decisions and issues that affected everyone in so many different ways. It wasn’t like one person’s pain was easier to handle than another is that’s like saying Vietnam was harder on those men than on the men that stood for black rights or vice versa, everyone faced these equally hard issues. So it seemed everyone was very emotionally involved. In fact our whole country was very involved in president elections and campaigns against the war, it seemed everyone really cared.
ID: 10029290 – I don’t know enough of the work of DV8 to present an answer on this but I think a lot of theatre at the moment with homosexual themes, are presented in a very positive and informative way.
Jennifer Wright Knust’s book Unprotected Text: The Bible’s Surprising Contradictions About Sex and Desire focuses on the relationship between Christianity and sex. Knust’s focuses on supplying various interpretations from rabbis and scholars to debunk the shallow contemporary interpretations that only use the bibles messages and verses negatively. Knust is a pastor, New Testament scholar and mother, and often uses anecdotes historical events to support her reasoning for writing this book. In her introduction, Knust elaborates on why the bible is not a guide book. Young girls often call each other sluts to inflict harm on one another. Whether they are “actually” is never in question, because being deemed a slut can happen to anyone. Knust notes
This film does not disrespect any certain group of people or portray an individual with a bad image, if anything this film shines a light of acceptance on all the topics portrayed such as trans imagery, gay tendencies, body image, etc. This is a film that I believe should be considered a classic American film because it broke boundaries in not only the LGBTQ community but broke social boundaries around the world. Almost everyone i’ve talked after having watched Rocky Horror Picture Show feels so liberated and ready to take on the world as corny as that may sound. This film empowers all to be themselves and to not be afraid to have a little self-expression especially in times like today where almost everyone strives to be the same or so it seems. People seem to be afraid to show their true colors because fear of judgment from the outside world or due to social pressures, I can relate to this because I was also once like this I was afraid to show my true colors in fear of being socially judged but after watching this film I felt the need to be myself and take in all the things that make me and show it to the world no matter what others may say or
Again, this documentary focuses on the aspirations and culture of African American homosexuals and transsexuals. What is interesting about this subject is the depth of the culture. Filled with nuances and its patois, gay and transsexual culture is remarkably complex, and the film exposes all.
Pressures of a religious context may be heightened for gay, lesbian, transgendered and questioning adolescents, contributing to a magnified sense of distress and vexation pertaining to family and peers (Dahl, 2009). Moreover, gay youth that has been taught God is condemnatory and wrathful have been found to have lower levels of self-image (Dahl & Galliher, 2010). In fact, a number of spiritual denominations cast out and denounce gay youth (Sherkate, 2002). In reflective studies, this has been connected to feelings of self-reproach, humiliation, hopelessness and suicidal thoughts (Rodriguez & Oullette, 2000; & Shuck & Liddle, 2001). Accordingly, the pressures of religious philosophy, tradition, and his family’s blatant disapproval appeared to inhibit the healthy formation of Bobby’s sexual
Like many people in our time, Christians are studying and discussing issues related to human sexuality over many years. What is God’s view of sexuality? How are the pressures from a broader culture and the development of technology affecting God’s role in regards to human sexuality in tomorrow 's society?
If I meet the wrong person or being forced to do something, I should reject and leave immediately. This movie brings a lot of thinking about sexuality, sexual orientation and gender issues, and it does influence audiences in many different
The biggest thing I learned from this book was how uncomfortable we as americans are with sex and anything involving sex. We think that if preach abstinence and try to scare people out of having sex then it won’t happen, or if we ban all sexual content then the world will be a better place and there will be less rapes, less domestic abuse, and people will stop having sex before marriage. As much we try to separate religion from state when it comes to sex religion comes into play big time. Religion is the main reason why we see premarital sex as wrong. Its the reason why we view it as a bad thing and it’s why we shame people for doing something that is complete normal and okay to do. Like Klein said in the book “It’s a public
