Throughout life individuals observe and experience social behaviors. The combination of personal characteristics and social situations creates how an individual behaves (Bordens & Horowitz, 2002). Individual behavior is an important concept to understand because it provides a way to help explain various aspects of a situation. For this paper, the behavior of stress within a leadership position will be discussed and applied to gender role theory within social psychology. The role theory will be explored to help understand the framework of stress, how it relates to social workers within leadership positions, the effects it has on the community, and how this theory can apply personally as a social worker within the field. For instance, I have experienced discrimination and prejudice because I can bear children. Meaning that long term opportunities were not presented to due to the possibility of being away from work for a length of time. This caused emotional stress and frustration due the job performance and contributions I give to the organization. It is truly unfair that men can get additional chances to advance and make more money due to their inability to birth a child. Therefore, when it comes to my social behavior, I continue to pursue my education and show within my work that the only reasoning that should be considered for any job opportunity should only be based on experience. A stress management intervention that I use to debrief and release my stress is supervision. I take this time to express my interest and possible advancement so that my professional expectations are clear. Gender role theory is a way to clearly understand the behaviors that can be caused by stress within the workplace. Within leadership, one must be able to recognize the additional resources and supports that are needed for all individuals to succeed to prevent stressful behaviors from occurring. Therefore, stress management interventions can help reduce frustration and lack of support, which can reflect in job performance
