In Canada, Bill C-16 can fine people for not using the preferred pronouns that others demand regardless of biological sex assigned at birth, anatomy, appearance, etc. Non- binary genders such as ey, ve, ze, etc. are also embedded into Bill C-16. Requiring to use gender-neutral pronouns is harmful to society because it attempts to control language forcefully by using legislative power. Everyone has the right to establish themselves as conscious beings in the world that should uphold to their beliefs and not be compelled by law. People should not be compelled by law to use gender-neutral pronouns because it violates the freedom of expression, it does not constitute discrimination by misgendering others, and it builds a false philosophy on identity …show more content…
The freedom of expression should enable everyone to hold opinions without interference. I. Free speech is the absence of censorship. II. Having gender-neutral pronouns in law controls language, and it compels people to use words they do not agree with. III. Misgendering people should not regarded as discrimination because it is subjective. A. Gender identity and sexual orientation differ in several important respects from race and sex because it is not objective. I. Gender identity and sexual orientation is subjective, self-disclosed, and self-defined. II. Requiring gender-neutral pronouns into law can be abused easily by others for discrimination. B. Gender is used to classify people, not to display respect or disrespect. I. Businesses will not regard race and sex, but they will regard in gender identity and sexual orientation because it includes behaviors. II. It is considered discrimination for not using gender-neutral pronouns even though some people refuse to do so because they do not believe in it. IV. Gender-neutral pronouns should not be required by legislation because it builds a social constructionist doctrine of identity. A. Having gender-neutral pronouns required by law builds in a philosophy that
Transgender is an umbrella term, meaning an individual’s gender-identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth. Although transgender is a protected class in eighteen states, these individuals still face discrimination within the country and around the world (“Non-Discrimination Laws”). Transgender is not a lifestyle, no one chooses to live their life constantly being discriminated against. Transgender issues should be more educated on and their lives should be more protected.
Females have to dress like a man, act like a man, and be like a man; to get a “man’s” job.
Huebner, D. M., Rebchook, G. M., & Kegeles, S. M. (2004). Experiences of harassment, discrimination, and physical violence among young gay and bisexual men. American Journal Of Public Health, 94(7), 1200-1203.
Despite there being many reasons as to why people discriminate homosexuals, the most popular ones are due to their religion or cultural norm. They include acts of verbal and physical abuse towards individuals who are homosexual. For those who are homosexuals, they are verbally abused by name calling such as fag, homo or sissy more than two dozen a day. There was a survey conducted by Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and found that 86 percent of LGBT teens are being harassed at school in 2007. In 2013, 82 percent of teens had problems from previous year with bullying about sexual orientation. 64 percent felt unsafe at school and 32 percent did no go to school because of feeling unsafe. Even as an adult homosexual are attacked verbally.
‘Boys will be boys’, a phrase coined to exonerate the entire male sex of loathsome acts past, present, and potential. But what about the female sex, if females act out of turn they are deemed ‘unladylike’ or something of the sort and scolded. This double standard for men and women dates back as far as the first civilizations and exists only because it is allowed to, because it is taught. Gender roles and cues are instilled in children far prior to any knowledge of the anatomy of the sexes. This knowledge is learned socially, culturally, it is not innate. And these characteristics can vary when the environment one is raised in differs from the norm. Child rearing and cultural factors play a large role in how individuals act and see themselves.
One of the earlier ones originated in Europe and was used until the 18th century—this was referred to as the one sex model, which as not based on differences like our widespread gender binary is today. They believed there was one sex, but even in their beliefs, women’s bodies were seen as slightly inferior to men’s. Then subsequently, as science became mainstream, male bodies were believed to be superior to females as it “became increasingly marginal or subject to male control” (Grewal & Kaplan p.2, 2002). Also, until the emergence of transgender and queer theories, feminists viewed the binary as the fixed foundation of sexism (Grewal & Kaplan, 2002). Another variation was part of Indigenous cultures in Canada—they had diverse forms of erode, gender and social life compared to the Europeans. Two-spirits, mixed-genders, cross-dressers, and women being more socially equal to men were present and widely socially accepted. However, due to the colonization, the white settlers enforced their values among the indigenous peoples—the creation of Canada was the downfall and marginalization of their gender diversity (Kinsman, 1996). The strict sex/gender binary is essentially very socially constructed, and widely endorsed due to Western
In today’s society people are becoming more open about their gender. Celebrities are becoming trans-gendered and this is affecting society because it leaves people in confusion on if the person is male with feminine traits. This causes society to view a trans-gendered person different than others because they chose to change their gender from what they were born as at birth. Changing from male to female allows people to view that person to be weak because generally the male is the dominant sex in life. In culture women are marked by wearing dresses, their body structures and having the title “Mrs.” while men remain unmarked by their clothing and appearances.
Today the social construct of gender we see in Western society consists of two genders: men and women. The binary gender system has strict, set roles and expectations for presentation of gender, activities appropriate for each gender, and especially sexualities. The social construct of a strict binary gender system creates and enforces strict binary contradicting roles for sexuality through gender roles and norms that oppress everyone who does not conform and oppresses any other non-conforming sexualities.
Social Construction of Gender is a process, stratification system and structure. The day to day interactions emphasize gender as opposites. Take for instance, conversations, formalities of daily life, sayings, and so on. The social construction of gender is created through social interaction – through the things we do and say with other people. This means that gender it is not a fixed or inherent fact, but instead it varies across time and place.
There are many forms of discrimination such as age, disability, transgender, and sex discrimination. This paper will focus on discrimination based on gender, race and age in the workplaces. All over the world, we hear about people treating each other prejudicially depending on their background, ethnicity, or sex orientation. Workplaces should be free from all personal biases but unfortunately, we hear about employees being discriminated against, almost, on a daily basis. Workplace discrimination can be described as treating an individual or a group of people differently than others.
Sexual discrimination, also known as gender discrimination is prejudice based on the sex of a person. Throughout history, discrimination against people of any kind, for countless reasons, have led to many catastrophes. While sexual discrimination may not seem to bring any sort of impending doom, it causes traumatic effects on individual worldwide. It does this by affecting many aspects of a person’s life, such as their emotional and physical well-being. Sexual discrimination also plays an effect on religion. In a world where lives are shaped on ethics and morality, the Catholic religion does it’s best to highlight the religious views and aspects on such matters.
Everybody is born and made differently, but one thing is similar, our gender. We are born either male or female, and in society everybody judges us for our gender. This is called gender roles; societies expecting you to act like a male or female (Rathus, 2010). Some people say, “act like a lady,” or “be a man,” these are examples of how gender roles work in our everyday lives. In society when we think stereotypes, what do we think? Many think of jocks, nerds, or popular kids; gender stereotyping is very similar. Gender stereotypes are thoughts of what the gender is supposed to behave like (Rathus, 2010). One example of a gender stereotype for a man would be a worker for the family, and a women stereotype would be a stay at home mom. Though in todays age we don’t see this as much, but it is still around us. In different situations both gender roles and stereotypes are said and done on a daily basis and we can’t avoid them because everyone is different.
Women have fought through torture, blood, sweat, and tears to help women stand strong in our
In today’s society we as humans are aware and accepting of more identities than we ever have been before. Civil rights movements all over the world are advocating for everything from marriage equality, to laws protecting gender-queer people. However, it isn’t perfect. Just as there will always be racists and homophobes, there will always be people who say gender identity is a choice. Well, a study done earlier this year proves those people wrong.
There is constantly cessation why women and men cohabitate, nurture, desire, and endure. Many shrug the similarities and differences to the side due to the complex nature that is involved in understanding the progression. Since the beginning of time, according to the bible, man was placed as the dominant sex, fending for the families well being. The woman has tended to the important jobs around the homestead as situations arose. Often in society, one will find himself in a battle depending on the views of the receiving recipients. Following is a dialogue explaining a safe and metro sexual view as a general whole.
