Gender discrimination is one of the underlying factors in the sex-segregated labour market in Indonesia. Many male workers are accused of sexual harassment. Additionally, some companies even deny access to their finances. They lack the protection of the domestic workers.
The informal economy has many policies they want to adapt. They want to end the globalized cheap-labour manufacturing sectors. They want to create opportunities for employment for females workers in more urban areas.Indonesia has a plan to merge the public and private sectors to do this. They also want to improve the conditions of work and pay. International Labour Organizations are working along with Indonesia to promote the equal opportunity.
Traditional patriarchal norms have relegated women to secondary status within the household and workplace. Throughout most of recorded history, women generally have endured significantly fewer career opportunities and choices, and even less legal rights, than that of men. The “weaker sex,” women were long considered naturally, both physically and mentally, inferior to men. Delicate and feeble minded, women were unable to perform any task that required muscular or intellectual development. This idea of women being inherently weaker, coupled with their natural biological role of the child bearer, resulted in the stereotype that “a woman’s place is in the home.” Therefore, wife and mother were the major social roles and significant professions assigned to women, and were the ways in which women identified and expressed themselves. Society has always given more power to men than to women. Before the 19th amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920, only men had the right to vote. Before this, women were seen as the property of either her husband or her father and not her own person. They had to follow laws they couldn’t vote for, pay taxes on property they had no rights to, and could not get a college education. They were very limited on occupations, and what jobs they could work paid very little. Because of their limited opportunities and the gender roles of that time, many ended up as housewives. They were expected to do all the housework, cooking, and care for the children. If she did something that displeased her husband, he could beat or imprison her without any legal consequences (the National Women’s History Project, 1998).
