Gender experiences happen throughout our lives on a daily basis however, many times we are unaware of these experiences. I am 46 years old so I have seen many changes in gender stereotypes but never paid much attention until I was taught/shown what these experiences are. I am going to share with you my experience at a job interview with the United States Postal Service.
After several steps in the hiring process, I was interviewed by a middle aged man and I knew I would need to prove that I was capable of performing such a physical job. The women in these positions wanted to be treated like men and did not want preferential treatment because of their gender. Unfortunately women still do not choose these occupations mostly by choice but also because of the sex-typing of these positions (Hulme 165). The article relates to my gender experience by pointing out that gender should not play a role on whether or not you are qualified for the job. I did not want special treatment and I proved that I could do the job better than a man and I take pride in that. These are social constructs that are set by society. Construction has always been a masculine job and because women can do it makes men feel like they are losing their masculinity (Ness 670-671). Looking back on the jobs I’ve had they are often considered manly jobs in society which leads me into thinking about gender roles in our society. Gender roles are a set of behavioral norms assumed to accompany one’s status as a male or female (Conley 2017). Gender roles are very prevalent in determining one’s career. Gender roles are socially constructed so they are likely to be based off stereotypes. For example, a truck driving company may not hire a woman simply because women are stereotyped as bad drivers. In a study done by Lindsey Rice and Joan Barth they found that males were less likely to recommend the female applicant, particularly after stereotype-congruent priming. Meaning that simply a female applicant might be passed on just because of her gender. This then leads us into sexism. Sexism is when a person’s sex or gender is the basis for judgment or discrimination (Conley 2017). Positions of Power: How Female Ambition is Shaped by J.D. Nordell of Slate Magazine details the female disposition in the workplace. Nordell writes, “...women account for 35 percent of MBAs but only 2 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs. Women now make up 16 percent of congressional seats - and 0 percent of U.S. presidents…” (Nordell). The statistics provided above show an obvious discrepancy in the amount of influence women have in the workplace. A popular theory is that this discrepancy is caused by the influence of gender roles on the workplace - men are not taking women as seriously in the workplace. Females’ introduction into the major economy is still a relatively new concept, and the underlying archaic gender role that women should tend to the house and children is preventing women from being taken seriously by the men of the business world, and thus constraining their performance in the economy. This is further supported by the case of Ben Barres: “Recently, the transsexual neuroscientist Ben Barres, who has worked as both a woman and a man in science, noted that he is treated with more respect and interrupted less frequently now that he is a man” (Nordell). Even the way we impose a racial interpretation on someone draws on traditional customs that reflect both gender and race. Overall, it is astonishing how consistent the design of ethnic fluency is within societal expectations about what other people do, and even what we anticipate from women compared to that of men. Throughout history men and women have been segregated into two separate sectors of employment "male" and "female." Historically, humans have witnessed various acts of fallacious imperialism that is often imposed upon groups of people based on ethnicity, skin completion and, gender. One without any socially constructed knowledge of gender would pose the question can someone really be denied employment based on gender? The answer when taking in consideration the social and empirical notions that are prevalent in society the answer would unfortunately yes, they can and have been denied historically based on gender. Suzanne Tallichet notes that the gendered division of workplace labor is rooted in flawed ideology of innate sex differences in traits and abilities, and operates through various control mechanisms. Social Construction of Gender is a process, stratification system and structure. The day to day interactions emphasize gender as opposites. Take for instance, conversations, formalities of daily life, sayings, and so on. The social construction of gender is created through social interaction – through the things we do and say with other people. This means that gender it is not a fixed or inherent fact, but instead it varies across time and place.
It is, therefore, natural for most companies to think that women cannot be as capable as men in terms of assuming strenuous or challenging positions because women, by default, become less participatory and more vulnerable when they start to have family and children. Apparently, this situation has led to various gender discriminations in the labor market. In conclusion, although the roles of men and women have radically changed over the turn of the century, it is still inevitable to have various gender-related occupational differences because the social and biological roles of women and men do not really change. Society still perceives women as the home makers and men as the earners, and this perception alone defines the differing roles of men and women in the labor market.

Our society’s culture has established a set of unwritten cultural laws of how each gender should act, or in other words society has ascribed a stereotype. Men’s gender identity has been one of masculinity, and masculinity is defined as referring to a man or things described as manly. What does manly mean though?
