The Digestive disorder I choose was Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is caused when your stomach acid backs up into the tube connecting to your mouth and stomach which is called the esophagus. This acid reflex causes irritation in the lining of the esophagus often causing irritation. When a person has this disease, they normally have burning pain in the middle of their chest with some symptoms normally occur at night. Such as chronic coughs, worsening asthma and disrupted sleep. While other symptoms can include chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and sensation of a lump in your throat. Which can happen twice a week. Some risk factors can include Obesity, pregnancy, and bulging of the top of the stomach up into the diaphragm also known as the hiatal hernia. There are also factors that can aggravate acid reflux such as smoking, or eating large meals late at night. Eating …show more content…
Then there’s medication. If these two doesn’t work the doctor then suggest surgery such as Fundoplication, this is when the surgeon wraps the top of your stomach around the lower esophageal sphincter, to tighten the muscle and prevent reflux. Fundoplication is usually done with a minimally invasive (laparoscopic) procedure. The wrapping of the top part of the stomach can be partial or complete. Then there’s a second surgery that can performed by installing a Linx device. Which is a A ring of tiny magnetic beads is wrapped around the junction of the stomach and esophagus. The magnetic attraction between the beads is strong enough to keep the junction closed to refluxing acid, but weak enough to allow food to pass through. The Linx device can be implanted using minimally invasive
When someone first finds out they have Crohn’s disease, they will probably feel overwhelmed. There are so many questions. Will I be able to work, travel and exercise? Should I be on a special diet? Could my medications have side effects? How will Crohn’s disease change my life? The better informed they can become, the more equipped they will be to be an active member in your healthcare (Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, 2009).
Might as well she felt that something was missing and that won’t stop until she sees that missing part come together. What she said was “ I have a chronic heartburn because I used to make myself throw up after I ate.” Gay wanted us to think that her heartburn was something that she was missing, but I guess it wasn’t that. Her reason every time she ate she would throw up and that’s why the acid comes through, because of all the digestion is gone and feels that burn inside of her. She feels hurt, pain on how she is a bulimic and doesn’t think for that moment she is hurting herself Mostly her heartburn was starting up again and that she needed to punish herself again, so she can stop what she is
In this article, you are informed about a disease that is occurring more often in our society. It is commonly referred to as “heartburn” but is more appropriately named acid reflux disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Most people suffer from this disease, but think nothing of it. Perhaps they have felt it after a big meal, lying down after eating, during pregnancy, or even when bending over. Most people feel that GERD occurs after eating spicy foods, when in fact the major cause of GERD is fatty foods and the quantity of foods eaten.
Swallowing is a complex action involving the muscles and nerves within the pharynx and esophagus, a swallowing center in the brain, and nerves that connect the pharynx and esophagus to the swallowing center (medicine net). But what would happen if it became difficult to swallow, or even worse, you lost the ability to swallow? What are the causes of this and what treatments are available? There are many specific causes that include physical obstruction of the pharynx or esophagus, diseases of the brain, diseases of the smooth muscle of the esophagus, diseases of skeletal muscle of the pharynx, and miscellaneous diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s disease and dementia) (Dysphagia, n.d.). Intervention for patients with dysphagia is diet modification of solid foods and/or liquids.
Acid is produced naturally in your stomach to help you digest food and to kill bacteria. This acid irritates the stomach lining so our body produces a natural mucus barrier which protects it. Sometimes this barrier may be damaged thus allowing the acid to damage the stomach causing inflammation, ulcers and other conditions. Other times, there may be a problem with the muscular band at the top of the stomach that keeps the stomach tightly closed and this allows the acid to escape and irritate the oesophagus. This is called 'acid reflux' and can cause heartburn and/or oesophagitis. Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole stop cells in the lining of the stomach from producing too much acid. This can help prevent ulcers from forming or assist the healing process. By decreasing the amount of acid, they can also help to reduce acid reflux related symptoms such as heartburn.

Tennessee Williams’ play “A Streetcar Named Desire” illustrates his past through sadistic poetry – in his play he portrays himself as a god that has absolute control of the story; additionally, he constructs a numerous amount of tragedies for his fictional characters to suffice his pleasure. Choice “E” is the best answer. This patient has Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES), which is caused by a gastrin-secreting tumor of the GI tract. The gastrin secretion in turn activates the ECL cells in the stomach. These cells release histamine which stimulates the parietal cells in producing acid. ZES can occur as a part of a genetic syndrome (MEN 1) or sporadically. The offending tumor is located in the duodenum, pancreas, or abdominal lymph nodes. Abdominal pain, heartburn and diarrhea are the most common symptoms in ZES patients. In patients in whom MEN1/ZES is suspected, a history indicative of kidney stones, elevated calcium levels(i.e., hyperparathyroidism), and pituitary disorders (i.e., adenomas) should be sought. Freshman year of college began just like every other year for me, busy, boring, and filled with stomachaches. After every meal I ate, my stomach would feel as if I was being eaten from the inside out. Occasionally the pain would be so horrid that I would ball up into the fetal position and remain that way until the pain had passed. After months of enduring this, I finally went to the doctor. After much discussion, we determined that I had gluten intolerance. Intolerance is not as serious as coeliac disease; however, the treatment remains the same.
