I beleive the gangs culture, no matter what type of gang, exsist in parallel to our normal life culture. Again, one precision, is that the gangs doesn't develop anywhere. I do not see them much to be developped here in the districkts like Benson or Dundee, but I imagine, even if Omaha is a quiet city, if we will go more far to the Nord we will have an occasion to meet them. What does it mean? For me it mean, that gangs are the organized delinquant subculture of our society, and as any other type of criminal org. Make a pratical selection of their future territory, before to instal or create themselfs officially. Even if the grouth the gangs has been constated, “Simply finding a growth in gangs or the number of gang members does not tell …show more content…
us that violence associated with these gangs has increased” (Sullivan, 2005). Naturally, they chose the weak and not the strong, the poorer and not rich, simply because the first can give him an immediat response to the violence, while the second (poor and weak) not only won't be able to manifest his reaction, there is actually no matter if he is agree or disagree with the gang appearence in his neigborhood, the effect will remain the same.
“The isolation and growing social exclusion in many impoverished communities are thought to have foreshadowed the emergence of a subculture that produces even more vio- lence” (Anderson, 1999; Elias & Scotson, 1965; Massey & Denton, 1993; Venkatesh, 2000; Willis, …show more content…
1977). As, explained the reserchers of our assigned readings for this week (Pattillo, 1998 , AUTHORS, names) in some cases those inhabitants of the poor and instable neigborhood may be even recognicient to the gang for their presence and participance in the community life. Like in As in case of “former supervisor of Groveland Park”, who said that Black Mobsters were “ better organized than police in organizing neigborhood”. (Pattillo, 1998) or in the description of “one of the biggest gang leaders in Chicago (...) by “Keith, 26 yo resident”(...) : “ I won't say he all bad, he does do a lot of good things for the community. But he do'em for the wrong reasons”(Pattillo, 1998) >>>> I think, there are a lot amoung us, who admire and romanize the gangsters. Gangs, are the modern version of the gangsters. However, in reality,it's not a sequel of gangster, but much more banal and basic thinking., I've admired gangster during my teens year, but only in the screen, as for me, there are absolutely not the same stance and classe between these two organizations, similar in their names only. I think, that in some way, mafia was able to solves the problems, while the law was unavailable, but gangs have no common ground with them.
In my oppinion, gangs, in it's absolute totality, are not the best part of our society, but it's a direct consequence of our society instability. The division on middle class and low class it too much significant, and we cant unfortunately, impliment any ( force or peaceful) to deleite this social class. We only can ameliorate our society low class inhabitant level, allow them to change the class, propose the opportinities of real potential and grouth, which naturaly help them to improuve their every day life conditions, theirs and theirs familly and kids, which, at my extent will naturaly influence, the deminuition the role of gangs in their every day life. If we arrive to propose the community the intervensional program, or prevensional, which will can not only try, but will make it effect from the very beggining, it will be much effecient, than to use the power and introduce the force based mesure, like the “Gangbuster bill” or
others. Regarding the exsisting gang in the communities, it may be useful to continuer on the Short and Strodtbeck's idea (1965) and infiltrate the detached workers into a selected gang in order to understand the nature of delinquent subculture, to measure the ongoing relations of group members as well as their role and inluence on the community's life, and it's incliminalization. In the support of my thinking, I would like to underline the importance of Albert Cohen's theory of delinquent subculture and his book “Delinquent boys” (1955), he reminded us that the youth engaged in crime seeks a social status, as a result of its own “American Dream” (Messner and Rosenfeld, 2013) failure. Why, don't we simply try to give the possibily of this status acquir for both the poor low incom neigborhood and the gang's members? I will propose the member (those who would like to participate) of the selected gang to different places of work twice a week for 4 hours, in the begginig, for example. Those may be various range of work, and they may be able to make their selection. Like this it will give them the opportunity, not only to force themselve go to work, instead of hanging with the gang's peers, but will give them the feeling to do what that like. For example: I will negociate with the small businesses in the community, and its nearest area, and will place the boys for work their. Ex: gaz stations, Mac Do, garages, shops, ect They will receive a salary and a monthly compensation for their assiduity, for example tickets to the cinema, clothes, invitations to a restaurant with their families, etc. In order to persuade them, we need to identify a list of strong opportunities, which will give them hope to succeed without crime. Their future position will help them demonstrate to their families that they are capable of not only earning money independently but also it will aid them gain respect. This is why we need to reinforce the effectiveness of the aimed practices, in particular the prevention of youth violence in four key areas: parents and families, collective efficacity, help to build sociability and skills in their social relations with others, mentoring. It may be useful to increase the collective efficacy, throug the streng of the watch neigborgood, security measures, reduction of unemployement, common socialization of the neigborhs ( common events). As stated by Papachristos and Kirk, 2006 “ collective efficacy mediates the effects of some of the structiral features of neigborhood” On the other hand, in order to propose the other efficient program in the 4 disctincs area, it can be very useful to impliment the already tested and sucessful programs, like for example the “Blueprint program”. proposed by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado Boulder. (http://www.colorado.edu/cspv/blueprints/index.html) In 1996, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) of the University of Colorado has designed and launched a national initiative to prevent violence in the United States, which aimed to identify effective programs in the field. As part of the project entitled Blueprints for Violence Prevention, identified prevention and intervention programs are those corresponding to rigorous scientific standards in terms of efficiency. Conclusion: The principal objective of this research is to give delinquent teens a chance to think differently and allow them to decide if they can continue their path in life without any criminal implication in it. Therefore, I believe that in case of this particular study, the counseling approach will work more efficiently in comparison to a control or punitive type of program.
Cultures can be considered positive or negative. One example of a negative culture would be street gangs. A street gang may be defined as a group of people who form an allegiance for a common purpose and who engages in criminal activity. Street gangs are also considered an illegal culture. All gangs share common characteristics such as a group name, style of dress, claim to a geographic location, and also associate together on regular bases (Walker). Also, many images of members suggest the use of illegal drugs and al...
Gangs have been in existence since the beginning of the Roman Empire. There were speeches made by Roman orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, which references groups of men who constantly fought and disrupted Roman politics (Curry, 2013). The history of street gangs in the United States begins with their emergence on the East Coast around 1783, as the American Revolution ended. Though many believe the best available evidence suggests that the more serious street gangs likely did not emerge until the early part of the nineteenth century (Sante, 1991). Although our country has had their share of feared gangs like in the 1980’s with the turf war between the Bloods and Crips, back in the 17th and 18th century the Mohocks of Georgian, England were one of the most feared gangs. What draws juveniles to the gang lifestyle? Many people will say that most gang members are children from impoverished communities, single family homes where there was no father present, or maybe there is a more psychological/sociological answer? By appearance and presence most gangs cause fear, crime, and disillusionment in the communities they occupy. Throughout history joining a gang has been perceived as a life without any reward, yet by joining this lifestyle many juveniles are able to gain the needed stability and security in their lives.
It is surprisingly difficult to pinpoint the origin of street gangs. This may be because of the inherent nature of gangs: a group of individuals who come together for the same purpose and in the case of str...
Gangs are a group of boys and believe it or not girls too, that frequently get together to make all types of vandalism and actions that are not admitted by the law. Gangs have been part of the world for a very long time; they have also evolved through time. For example gangs in the 1960’s are not the same as the gangs we see today in our days. Many gangs were made before and after the 1960’s but the major gangs in this time were: The Crips, The Latin Kings, KKK, The Bloods which were enemies of The Crips, and the 18th Street Gang.
The gang related activity of America cannot be extinguished overnight, but understanding that the fight against such crime is not an easy task will help win the American people’s support. The average citizen is enraged as well as discouraged by the acts of criminal gang forces, and the majority of Americans stand behind law enforcement already. The only way to put a dent in the criminal gang forces of America is through a combination of cooperation, education, and training techniques.
This paper will cover issues that young minorities encounter in the movies; Crips and Bloods: Made in America (2008), Gran Torino (2008), A Better Life (2011). Movies will be summarize, and compare and contrast youths experienced. Criminological theories shall be utilized to further elaborate issues. Finally steps and theories will be utilized towards solving issues, also possible methods to correct the issues will be addressed in the end.
Across the United States and Europe, suburban gangs are growing as never before, estimations that in a typical inner city American community of 50,000 or more, there are 200 to 500 gang members. Some even larger organization called super gangs, which have more than 1,000 members spread over several states, have been known to operate in small town America. You cant say that any community is insulated from this activity," There's no restriction on where gang members can live. Gang members living in the suburbs share traits with recruits in the cities, and many of those factors have been exacerbated by tough economic times, The list of factors include divorce, separation, physical abuse, sexual abuse and having a parent with
In the 1920’s there was a study conducted by Fredric M. Thrasher. Thrasher studied 1,313 gangs in Chicago and revealed the issue of gangs. He considered the poor in poverty as the area increasing in gangs. This area was known as the “zone in transition” and was referred as in his studies. Thrasher has many law reinforcement and social workers helping him bring a stop to this madness. According to Thrashers studies “Important variables such as the age of gang members or the organizational features of the gangs were not related in a straightforward way to differences in the behavior of gangs” (Cummings 6). Thrasher has analyzed these gangs in many ways to the extent or romantic life in gangs. He helped us distinguish the difference in stereotype gangs and then the actual facts involving them.
As a kid I could remember walking to school every day. While on the way to school there was always a group of kids sanding outside of the school walking away. These kids dressed differently and they all whore the same type of clothes. It wasn’t until years later that I was told to stay away from them because they were gangsters. They were gangsters that caused problems to the community. These gangsters would go up to kids and try and jump them into their gang. For them the more members they had the more “territory they had.” One problem that major cities around the world have is gangs. Most of these gangs are made up of many juvenile delinquents looking for trouble. These gangs tend to hang out in certain places and claim it as their territory. Many of the gang members are drawn together by similar interests, and are brought up in similar neighborhoods.
Attitudes, meaning how we as people respond to a subject, values, what we perceive is right and wrong, and beliefs play a major role in what brings youngsters into gangs. How does one develop a "gang attitude" to begin with? To answer this we must look at the culture. The values we Americans tend to have, make the alternative life style very appealing, this in conjunction with the glorified gang life style portrayed through the lyrics of the "Gangsta" rap artists all influence the young impressionable mind. This may make the child feel a sense of power, identity, or family, reflecting on the child's attitude. Also one must look at the neighborhood. A child can turn a corner and buy cocaine, see a gang war being played out, etc. It is obvious that the child cannot help but be influenced by this.
A gang is a group of people who interact among themselves. Teen violence is contributed to these gangs. Most gangs claim neighborhoods as their territory and try to control everything inside that territory. This kind of antisocial behavior is a major problem in American Society.
Gangs originated in the mid 1800’s in the cardinal direction using it as a method to defend themselves against outsiders. The idea of gangs became populous, powerful, and a broad influence. But like all powers, they tend to corrupt and recognizes violence as a way of getting what they want faster than other methods. They turn violence into fun, profit, and control.Creating a situation that affects youth in today’s society.
Gangs exist because the members of a gang do not feel socially accepted by the world in which they live. A gang is a group of individuals who have decided to create their own levels of government, they have decided to educate themselves, and they are mostly intolerant of rules and laws of mainstream society. These individuals commit many crimes as a means to survival in the land. They have committed themselves to each other and are collectively called “a gang.” To join a gang you must first be initiated into the gang. There are different ways to be initiated. One way is for the initiate to be beaten by the group of individuals in the gang. Another way is to commit different types of crimes throughout the city. Others are being blessed in, meaning you have a family member already in the gang which gives the individual right to claim the gang. To be let into a gang, is no easy process. There are many different classifications of gangs. There are the Criminal gangs who look for gain in material
Proper education is a basic factor in equipping the youths with a better life away from gangs and other unlawful operations. Literature Review The meaning of gang is a subject that lacks clearness among researchers. According to Esbensen (2001), there is no clear and agreed definition of gang globally. Youth mobs and gang crimes are beneath the spotlight in the current media by means of both narratives and statistics stressing instances of disruptive actions.
Many stereotypes of gangs have been fabricated. The problem is that a majority of gang members do not fit these stereotypes, which, in turn, makes it hard for the to be caught (Klein). Traditionally they organize their group around a specific neighborhood, school or housing projec...
