Established in the year 1957, the Gairdner Foundation sought to reward excellence in fundamental medical research that affects human health internationally. Over the years, the foundation has given out 373 awards to scientists around the world. Twenty-three percent of these winners have later on proceeded to receive the much-coveted Nobel Prize in Medicine. The Gairdner Foundation has three types of awards. Every year, they are awarded to seven deserving awardees. Five awardees receive The Canada Gairdner International Awards while two others receive either The John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award or The Canada Gairdner Wightman Award. Each of the Gairdner laureates receives a CAD $100,000 prize, which they can use as they please. …show more content…
The nominees who qualify for this award are those who have made major scientific contributions and seminal discoveries that are interpreted as significant and original biomedical science achievements. The five recipients of this award are scientists who have made outstanding discoveries and significant contributions to medical science. It is important to note that a lifetime body of work is not necessarily considered as a nomination criterion for this award. The nominees are then evaluated based on the quality of their research as submitted to the foundation. 2. The John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award This prestigious award is given to the world’s best scientists for their outstanding achievements and contributions in Global Health Research. It was awarded for the first time eight years ago and has since grown to play a key role in highlighting various scientists who have made remarkable strides in global health research. The award is, however, not awarded to those with administrative or leadership achievements since it is science-based. Among qualifications for nomination to these awards include significant scientific advancements with a special impact in the developing nations. 3. The Canada Gairdner Wightman

At the age of 32, Frederick Banting was the first and youngest Canadian to receive the Nobel Prize. In 1934, Frederick Banting was knighted by King George V because of his achievements in medicine. Historical Significance to Canada Frederick Banting, with the help of Charles Herbert Best, J.R.R. Macleod and James Bertram Collip, were able to isolate insulin from animals and treat patients suffering from diabetes, using injections of the insulin. Insulin injections have succeeded in treating diabetes. Insulin Frederick Banting hypothesised that he could obtain the insulin hormone from dogs and then administer the insulin to patients with diabetes, using insulin injections.
In 1923 the Nobel Committee decided to award Banting and Macleod the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, making both of them one of the most famous Canadians in all of history.

Her dreams of being a scientist came true as she worked hard to achieve her degree and make startling discoveries. Among her accomplishments she made the discovery of isozymes of kynurenine formamidase in the basterium streptomyces parvulus which, prior to her findings, were known to only exist in higher organisms. Dr. Emeagwali also proved that cancer gene expression could be inhibited by antisense methodology, which she says can lead to better treatment for cancer. She is a well-accredited scientist that many people have never heard of. All fields of science affect the lives of many people, but the inventors are left out.

I am a Grade 11 student from Cambie Secondary in Richmond, BC, this letter and the website form serve as my application for the Vimy Pilgrimage Award. After discovering the Pilgrimage Award through my teacher and at Cadets, I was instantaneously drawn. Achieving this award would allow me to further discover and embrace the multifarious history of Canada through my local community. I believe that my service, positive contributions, and leadership is a good fit for this award.

As a researcher of this contemporary, the request for grants is a forefront challenge due to its scarcity. This is partly because grants are essential to run an experiment yet they are a limited source. Understandably, the competitiveness is eminent to maximise the use of the fund so the money is awarded and prioritised to researchers with the most promising projects. Since the establishment of these government funding bodies, the process is highly regulated to ensure a fair assessment of the worth of a scientific proposal. However, two years ago Australian Research Council’s financial support for biomedical research came to an end.
