Management Fundamentals
Essential concepts of management begin with the fundamentals. Fundamental management skills are executed on a daily basis with a significant impact to an organization. Because the greatest asset that an organization has is its personnel, management’s role in guiding, organizing, and monitoring could not be over emphasized. Management fundamentals have a resounding effect on style, motivation, decision making, planning, and communication, while also influencing structure, innovation, globalization, external expectations, behaviors, and performance.
Management Foundations and Style
Managers, by definition, are those that plan, organize, lead, and control. This is accomplished in a multitude of different ways with varying levels of emphasis. (Robbins, Decenzo & Coulter, 2013) Because we all become engaged with managers throughout our business and personal lives, the study of management serves to better understand behaviors of peers ranging from associates to proprietors and the roles of each within their respective organizations. When Jim Kimber, a member of the executive team from Glatfelter, was asked to describe his management style, he quickly responded with an understanding of the need for fluidity and the importance of a broad understanding.
My leadership style is people centered. As a result, my management style tends to flex between participative for less capable employees to delegative for more proven ones. Conclusion
Managing people is not easy. It could not be more important to fully understand the gravity of the situations that leaders at all levels are managing through. With study and practice, successful leading is one of the most rewarding experiences that life has to offer. Parents who guide their children though life, coaches who help their athletes achieve their goals, and managers who help their employees excel and their businesses flourish experience this satisfying and worthwhile adventure. Continual improvement does not just apply to the actions that take place each day. Effective leaders strive to continually improve themselves from within and hone their fundamental management skills to provide their followers with perpetual advancement.
This case study is about Abdul Chidiac, a 51 year old male, married with 4 children. He had a medical history of hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and cirrhosis with two admissions in the last six months. He is a smoker and drinks beer, 5-6 bottles per day. As Carithers & McClain (2010) explained the patient’s medical history is another indicator of the risk for cirrhosis; the progression to cirrhosis is adaptable and may take time over weeks or many years. Cirrhosis is a liver disease characterized by permanent scarring of the liver that interferes with its normal functions including alcoholism. Most people who drink large amounts of alcohol cause harm to the liver in some way (Heidelbaugh & Bruderly, 2006). The cause of cirrhosis is not yet known, but the connection between cirrhosis and excessive alcohol ingestion is established (Jenkins & Johnson, 2010). Common causes of cirrhosis include: alcohol abuse, hepatitis B infection, hepatitis C infection and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (Schuppan & Afdhal, 2008).
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
Management is the ability to get a job done using appropriate processes, models and systems to achieve an objective. Managers think radically, abide by principles, rules and use experience in their respective fields to make things work. A good manager goes about the ordinary activities such a staffing, organizing, planning (Robert, 2007). The very ability of his/her colleague to discover the uniqueness in each of the subordinates, capitalize on it, harnessing the best out of them to accomplish goals clearly distinguishes such a person as great when compared to others. Great managers develop people and enthusiastically transfer acquired skills to others, work progress is constant and usually by leaps and bounds. In addition, a great manager outlines and strategizes his/her team for project plans such that there is a “buy in” on delivered commitments. Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. There are currently five known viruses that cause can hepatitis (Microbiology, 10e). The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is transmitted through contact with the blood of an infected person; however, it is now more commonly spread among IV drug users that share needles. Healthcare workers are also at risk for contracting HCV, but with standard precautions, the risk is low. “Prior to 1992, some people acquired the HCV infection from transfusions of blood or blood products. Since 1992, all blood products have been screened for HCV, and cases of HCV due to blood transfusion now are extremely rare. HCV can be passed from mother to unborn child. Approximately 4 out of every 100 infants born to HCV-positive mothers become infected with the virus. A small number of cases are transmitted through sexual intercourse; however, the risk of transmission of HCV from an infected individual to a non-infected spouse or sexual partner without the use of condoms over a lifetime has been estimated to be between 1% and 4%. There have also been some outbreaks of HCV when instruments exposed to blood have been re-used without appropriate disinfection.” (Microbiology, 10e)
There is a disease spreading out in the world called Hepatitis C. It affects the liver and may cause the liver to fail. This disease is caused by a virus called Hepatitis C virus which is also known as HCV. About 32,000 people are affected with this disease per year only in the United States area. Some It’s a disease with many symptoms and many causes. of these symptoms are easy bruising, upset stomach and fever. These are just some of the many symptoms that come from the virus. Hepatitis Cs nature of the causative agent is determined by many things. The biological data of this disease is filled so much information. It is estimated that over 180 million people have gotten Hepatitis C and it is growing.
The only way to develop the kind of leaders a changing organization needs is to make leadership a critical criterion for promotion, and then manage people’s careers to develop it.
Patient education is closely related to the long term consequences of liver failure and what the patient can do to ensure continued health. Hepatitis C is spread through the transmission of tainted blood, through blood transfusions with infected blood, sharing of infected needles, hemodialysis, and unsafe sex. Other methods of infection include and any means where blood to blood crossing occurs such as sharing swabs or spoons. (Lewis et al, 2010, p.1166). The easiest way to prevent the spread of hepatitis C is to know who is infected and take all precautions necessary to prevent the spread from this individual such as the use of the sharps container, insist on a clean needle for tattoos or piercings.
Robbins (1997) defines managers as those who are all oversee the activities of other people with the purpose of accomplishing organizational goals. Therefore, in order to provide organizations with the best outcome, effective managers are urgently needed for modern organization. This is simply because, according to Hunsaker (2001), that the increasing recognition is given to the importance of having managers with strong interpersonal skills rather than, that twenty years ago, managers were only valued primarily for their technical know-how.
There are four different functions of management. In this paper, I will define these functions; planning, organizing, leading and controlling. I will also explain how each of these functions relates to my own organization. Bateman and Snell (2004) define management as the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals. By utilizing the four different functions of management companies can work with their employees and other resources to reach the organizations goals.
Managers nowadays do not actually do what a manager really should do back in the eighties. Changes that occurred in the new economy, the increasing use of technology in business, and the effects of globalisation towards business world have led management into a whole new dimension. New managers are expected to be able to manage on an international scale, act strategically, utilize technology, establish values, and of course, act responsibly as well. (Crainer, 1998) Henry Mintzberg once asked, "What do managers do?" After conducting his research based on a study of five CEOs, he concluded that managerial work involves interpersonal role, decisional role and informational role. And the fact is that, managers get things done through other people. Therefore, managers are required to possess certain skills and competencies which allow them to play these roles effectively and efficiently throughout the four functions of management. (Mintzberg, 1998)
Over the past hundred years management has continuously been evolving. There have been a wide range of approaches in how to deal with management or better yet how to improve management functions in our ever changing environment. From as early as 1100 B.C managers have been struggling with the same issues and problems that manager’s face today. Modern managers use many of the practices, principles, and techniques developed from earlier concepts and experiences.
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). The purpose of this essay is to highlight the importance of managerial skills. A management process is a line of activities and procedures such as planning, deciding and evaluating. We would be using an article titled What Great Managers by Marcus Buckingham as a base of discussion working on points that was overlooked and missed out though the report.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
