Race is a very interesting subject of sociology, and it is also immensely studied. What is race? Race is presumed common genetic heritage resulting in distinguishing physical characteristics” (Social Stratification). There are three basic theories to explain race in sociology; Functionalist Theory, Conflict Theory, and the Symbolic Interaction Theory.

It may be driven by “economic competition and struggle over scarce resources” (Ferris & Stein, 2010, p.224). In general white people have had advantages over people of color. Conflict theorists look at the wealth and privileged versus the people living in poverty and how it is passed down through generations. Black people typically have lower incomes than white people making it less likely for their children to get good educations and finish high school or go to college. The conflict theory looks at if a child 's parents do not have the money to send them to college they are less likely to have a well paying job, and it is just a continuing cycle of black people having low incomes. This happens because of how black people continue to be discriminated against over and over again throughout the years. “Julius Wilson believes that openly racist government policies and individual racist attitudes were the driving forces behind the creation of a black underclass, but that the underclass in now perpetuated by economic factors, not racial ones” (Ferris & Stein, 2010, p.224). In one book the author says that people should look at “conflict as a positive rather than a negative, conflict theory implicitly views subordinates in more active terms as part of power relationship” (Jackman, 1994, p.39). The study of race and its social formation in the article "Racial Formations" by Michael Omi and Howard Winant challenge our socially accepted concepts of "race", race being defined as the social categorization of black, white, yellow and red people. Race plays a pivotal role in society because it has a overwhelming influence on an individuals life choices and outcome. Society has historically placed positive and negative stereotypes on different races. Whites are presented and in many cases perceived as the standard of civility and beauty. People of color are conveniently grouped together as disingenuous to American patriotism in addition to being subjected to perpetuating stereotypes such as being lazy, criminal, and deviant to general society. Race in scientific terms is a fabrication, and societal terms it is a reality. Through the study of race and it's history we are able to understand it as a myth while analyzing it's social implications.
There is a specific meaning to race and how its role impacts society and shapes the social structures. Race is a concept that “symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies” (Omi & Winant 55). In other words, Omi and Winant get down to the crux of the issue and assert that race is just an illusion. Instead of being a biological concept, race is a social construct, and a relatively modern one at that. What is Race? Race is defined as a category, or a population of a species differing geographically, morphologically, or genetically from other populations of the same species. The differences between humans began a long time ago because humans lived in different parts of the world. Originally all humans belonged to one pure race. Most of todays’ people now have mixed racial ancestry. For example, some children in America come from an African American and Caucasian background. Race is somewhat not acceptable to humans because the division of humans into discrete types does not represent the true nature of human biological variation. In some societies race is an important social category. People from ancient societies would not separate people because of their physical differences, but by class, religion, language and even class. A trait or, gene, or characteristic can distinguish one’s race from another race. Scientist in Europe, have tried to classify Homo sapiens into categories, or race, based on where they live, physical features like body size, head shape, hair texture, and skin color.
Sociologists view society in different ways. Sociologists use three major theories: symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, and conflict theory. The symbolic interactionist perspective, also known as symbolic interactionism, directs sociologists to consider the symbols and details of everyday life, what these symbols mean, and how people interact with each other (Cliff). Some examples of symbolic interactionism are the meaning of marriage, the meaning of divorce, the meaning of parenthood, and the meaning of love. Symbols may include wedding bands, vows of life‐long commitment, a white bridal dress, a wedding cake, a Church ceremony, and flowers and music. American society attaches general meanings to these symbols, but individuals also maintain their own perceptions of what these and other symbols mean (Cliff). Symbols have a shared social meaning that is understood by all members of society. Symbolical interactionism is analyzed at a micro-sociological level. It examines small-scale patterns of social interaction. It focuses mainly on face-to-face interaction and how people use symbols to create a social life.
There are three main theories of sociology; functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionism. This paper will focus on two of those theories, functionalism and conflict theory. The objective is to delineate the assumptions of two out of the three theoretical perspectives and apply these assumptions to an analysis of social stratification. How this will be accomplished will be by comparing and contrasting their assumptions and by analyzing the two theories affect on social stratification. Secondly these ideas aren’t stagnant, they develop over time, they are ideas that connect the way we do things and it is reflected in our culture. This can be represented as interpersonal connections.
