Oscar Grant is a young man killed on New Year’s 2009 in Oakland, California at Fruitvale BART Station by a BART police officer by the name of Johannes Mehserle. Mehserle and other officers were called for a reports of fights that were occurring in Fruitvale Station, the officers detained Grant and other passengers off the train to the platform of the station. Officer Mehserle and his partner were restraining Grant, while trying to restraining him Mehserle told his partner to stand back he was going to tase Grant but pulled out and shot Grant in his back. The next morning he was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital\ Mesherle was sentenced for two years in prison, but only served eleven months for good behavior. This events was captured on many phones and was uploaded to social media, and news outlet which caused a high issue in the community even more once Mehserle was released out of jail early. Coogler wanted to create a movie based on Oscar Grant life in a less controversial way. Instead of mostly focusing on his death Coogler created a movie based on his early life before his last day on earth. Coogler created this movie because he seen the strong impact that it had on everyone and not just on himself, him being from the same area as Grant he felt that impact. Happening in today’s society, there have been countless number of citizens being killed by law enforcement. Some situations may not cause for force and others may. This case can be a reference in regards to making sure that the force you use is appropriate for the situation. On October 22, 2013, Andy Lopez, a young teenager at the age of thirteen years old, was shot and killed by a Sonoma County deputy named Erik Gelhaus. The community has taken sides either criticizing the officers actions, or supporting them. Whether the arguments are based on race or police abuse of power, we can clearly see step by step why officer Gelhaus did what he did from the first time he spotted Lopez, when he fired the shots, and by what actions he took after the fatal shootings. When looking at the circumstance as a whole, one can understand that Gelhaus's actions were justified and was done only to protect the community.
In conclusion, police corruption was and still is a major problem in the united states. Police are placed into society to serve and protect, but the New Orleans Police Department was infested with corruption from murder to drugs. Len Davis was the first police officer in history to ever receive to death penalty because of his unspeakable crimes that he had committed. Unfortunately, Kim Groves life was taken because she filed a complaint on Len Davis. The individuals that had really suffered were her children and family. Len Davis had no morals or value for life nor did he have any remorse for this unspeakable crime that he had committed. On October 20, 2014 a young male teen was fatally shot in Chicago, Illinois. The shooting occurred in the middle of the road and the suspect that was fatally shot was named Laquan McDonald. McDonald was just 17 years old and was the suspect after initial reports placed him in the scene of a possible car jacking. It was reported that Laquan McDonald had a knife and was also seen slashing tires of a police cruiser. When police had finally had him surrounded in the middle of the road, one officer opened fire and released 16 shots into his body. Another deputy on hand said the use of force was not needed because Laquan was not in any way trying to attack the officers present. The officer who fired the 16 shots into Laquan is named Jason D. In our society today, it is very sad that the African-American community has lost a great trust and respect for the Mayor, the police commissioner and the N.Y.P.D. Amadou Diallo's shooting was very upsetting for the African-American community. The shooting shock many people because an unarmed innocent black male was shot 41 times in front of his home by four officers that assume him to be a rapist.
In closing we will never forget what happened that day, but even we the juvenile justice system is put to its limits it still finds a way to adapt and overcome like it has so many times in the past. Rodney King is a name that many associate police brutality with and the outrage it can cause to a community. It was on March 3, 1991 when 25 year old Rodney King, who was on parole at the time, had been driving around in Los Angeles with some friends and reports say driving drunk had failed to initially pull over after driving at high rates of speed. He was finally pulled over and King resisted arrest and was initially subdued by a taser and that’s when things got ugly and ugly fast. King was beat with nightsticks over fifty times and one of the officers began to kick King in the head repeatedly and unknown to the officers and King, the arrest was being videotaped. King suffered brain damage, eleven skull fractures and other physical and emotional damage. The officer in the case was initially found not guilty of all criminal charges. This caused a major backlash is the community and a riot has ensued in South Central Los Angeles. The rioters, whom were mostly you black males began to set fires to buildings and cars, looted stores and assaulted innocent people coming through the neighborhood. The three key deaths of Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and Alton Sterling have become the face of police brutality in the year 2016. People knew that there was unequal treatment of black people by police in the United States and they made it known by creating #BlackLivesMatter. A key figure in the black lives matter movement was Eric Garner and his tragic, unexpected death from police brutality. The duty of a police officer is to protect the people with the laws and enforce them, not hurt the people.

On March 3, 1991 in California, Rodney King an African American, was pulled over after a high-speed chase, and after stopping was beaten by four white police officers (Worsnop 635). Tracy Brock also an African American was arrested in Manhattan in November of 1986. An officer smashed his head through a plate glass window, when Brock refused to go into the officer’s lunchroom (Police Brutality and Excessive Force in the New York City Police Department 14). Ki Tae Kim a Korean grocer was assaulted when he was accused of passing a counterfeit bill. Marcos Maldonado a Latino grocer was mistaken for a suspect after an armed robbery to his store. Abner Louima a Haitian immigrant was arrested outside a dance club in Brooklyn, and was brutally assaulted when he arrived at the police station. Volpe a long time police officer was accused of shoving a plunger into Louima's rectum so far that his bladder and intestines were lacerated. Then he shoved the plunger into Louima's mouth and broke his teeth (Steinback 8). These are just a few examples of the people who were affected of police brutality, and racism.
Donald Trump is a successful businessman who has accomplished more than most people could ever dream of. He started in the real estate business and has his own university, appeared on a T.V. show, is a billionaire, has many golf resorts, and is the president of the United States. He is criticized for many of his comments and political views. Some of these views are him wanting to build a wall to protect the United States from illegal immigrants and drugs, wanting to replace The Affordable Care Act, and banning people from Muslim countries to keep out terrorists. Although Donald Trump is often viewed as a controversial figure, he benefitted the United States of America by improving and creating jobs, proving that non-establishment politicians can still win the presidency, and by making America safer.
Society is faced with various problems that hinder the development of its communities. These issues affect the society in a numerous of ways and has a major effect on the citizens of the community as well. Social adversities causes grief and is also the cause of crimes and other miscellaneous activities that occur in inequitable areas. In the film, Fruitvale Station, there are abundant amounts of these adversities and societal issues that are illustrated. Fruitvale Station is a great example of a film that shows accurate social issues that occur in today’s society. The movie demonstrates issues of inequality, racial prejudice, gang involvement and also unemployment. It also shows how the people who are forced to live with these issues, fight for survival to maintain to see another day.
Marches are used to accomplish the goals of a group. A group may be marching to gain rights, further their beliefs and causes, and bring attention to a topic. The March on Washington was used to accomplish the passing of the civil rights bills. This march was a peaceful way to demonstrate for a cause and it included a lot of speakers and entertainment while working to help accomplish the important task of civil rights.
