For our theatre class we have to explain the process from conception to the presentation of a play. In order to understand this process one must understand that a director conceptualizes the play and inspires the company of artists to join together in collaboration. One should also consider the preparatory phase, the implementation phase, the presentation, and the people involved to help bring out the theme and concept for the audience. It is crucial to follow the phases involved in a certain order because each phase transforms into one another until the final product is how the director wants it presented.

It is important to collaborate as a group because it is early enough where the director can reject the ideas they have proposed as a group. Also, in the implementation phase the director positions the actors on the stage to make sure the timing is right. It is important to make sure the characters entrances and exits are on point. As everything starts to come together the director begins to act as a coach. Another key component in the implementation phase is the pace of everything, which creates suspense and style. In the final rehearsals the director’s responsibility is to focus on coordinating everything. This means bringing together all elements in a final technical rehearsal. If these phases weren’t followed in the correct order the presentation would not flow in the correct way. Elements that are added during the coordinating stage includes the scenic design, lighting design, costume design, makeup design, sound design, timing, and pacing. During the scenic design a designer uses materials such as platforms, draperies, and props to make the scenery realistic or metaphoric. During the costume design, the designer makes sketches and oversees selection of materials to realize the image on stage. The costume design also reflects the world of play and individualizes the character. This also ties in with make up design because it suggest psychological states, and age of the characters. All of these elements are rehearsed so the director, producer, dramaturgy, and designers can make changes if they need to. A director must navigate the cast and crew to a particular vision and keep them on that path. In addition, a director must be professional and maintain a positive attitude when it comes to dealing with opposition from a crewmember in the production. Essentially, Adam Burke expresses that a director must stay ahead, in regards to funneling the cast towards the appropriate vision and talking dealing with any problems that arise. Additionally, if there are any mistakes during the performance, it is okay because the audience does not expect a flawless production. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. Overall, I thought Mr. Burke did an exceptional job answering our questions and I would like to thank him for his time.
The playwright provides many aspects to create a play and to make it interesting. The actions and dialogue the characters make must be fluid and have a purpose. The playwright entices the audience with the different aspects to captivate their attention and keep it throughout the play. In The Illusion, Tony Kushner provides vivid details of the characters’ actions through dialogue. The actions characters perform absorbs the audience’s attention and leaves them wanting to see more of what will happen next to the characters. Although all aspects provided by the playwright are essential, action is the most riveting.
Powerful theater combines intellectual ideas and artistry of language with the visual power of movement and physical strength. The theater I most appreciate involves the actors’ equal commitment to their bodies as to their voices. This theater makes art of the entirety of our evolution—biological, linguistic, and cultural—and represents the ultimate artistic elevation of the human spirit. This is the theater I strive to create. I believe the director is ultimately responsible for providing the distinct, guiding perspective of a production. A strong director brings the audience a cogent, well-reasoned interpretation of the play and ensures consistency among the actors and design elements to create a production that is clear and effective. To do this well, a director must explore the history of the play and the playwright's inspiration as well as look for corollaries to the play’s style and subject in other media, culture and intellectual ideas, and ultimately, compile this information into a coherent blueprint for realizing the world and presenting the themes of the play. It is precisely this studied, integrative aspect of directing that I am most attracted to, and, I believe, that makes me a strong director.
In film however, the production is definitely a directors medium as he or she has total control over what parts of the texts are necessary and what parts are not. The director can lead an audience's attention in film by moving the camera to various angles and from various viewpoints whereas on stage this is limited as the only way in which to catch the audience's attention is by moving the spotlight on to someone at a certain part of the stage but even so they can still look around to other parts of the stage. In films their is a different chronology of events and intercutting is often used. This could be because a director feels that it's necessary to have the audience see what's happening in the other character's lives at the time something crucial is perhaps happening in another character's.

Devised theatre, also called collaborative creation, is a form of theatre in which the script is created through a collaborative process with the actors and the playwright, rather than the traditional method of theatre with a premade script. Devised theatre is created through the process, collaboration, and multi-vision of the group. Similar to improvisational theatre, a devised theatre play is created in the rehearsal process from the performers interacting with each other. By the time the devised play is performed the work is a cohesive piece that is, for the most part, set in stone. This form of theatre is a modern form of theatre, that came about from the collaboration of many different type of artists, because of the need of the performers to have some input into what they are performing. The devised theatre form is most utilized in the USA, Great Britain, and Australia, but especially in our country. Devised theatre utilizes physical movements, rather than focusing on only the language.

The plays that I enjoyed began with a clear introduction and ended in an appropriate place. The plays had an introduction that caught the eyes of the audience along with an interesting story line. Throughout the plays A Hopeless Dream, The Devils Are Here, and Four Stalls the audience was on bored with what was happening. The script was very organized. It was as if I was watching a movie, these performances had no mistakes, it was nearly perfect. In theses plays they began with an introduction that explained what was going on to the audience. The cast made me feel as though I was with them. They were not every dramatic. It seemed like they acted the way they would have if these situations actually happened to them. They did a great job of performing the content without making it seem like this was all made up. Once these plays were finished I wanted more, I wanted to know what was going to happen, especially in the play A Hopeless Dream. The lights went out at an appropriate time, but it made my friends and I want to see what would happen next, it was like a “to be continued” episode of The Vampire Diaries. I had the same feeling with the play The Devils Are Here. It was humorous and it caught my full attention, but once the lights went out I wanted the actors to continue acting because of how phenomenal the play
We think about all the aspects of the productions, but I’m not sure if this is gets rewritten down in our prompt books anymore. I think we should start writing down more details in our prompt books because it will help us when we director and help us develop our craft, and become better more well-rounded directors. Once he got the regiebuch done he would be meet with the designers to discuss everything he has thought about, and get that settled all before the play is casted. So when starts the rehearsal process he can focus on the actors and not have to worry about the technical stuff because they will know what Reinhardt wants. Thus, giving the actors his full attention to help them get to where he wants to be.
However, even though they depict the same content and the same idea, they are developed in rather different ways. The performance is more about the action and the flow of the events while the film is more about the memories and personal perception accomplished through the eyes of a witness and participant of the events. The movie is brighter and exposes over more means to depict the depth of the situation through the use of decorations and costumes. The Last Five Years is a musical by Jason Robert Brown. It follows the story of Cathy and Jamie, a young couple in New York City. Cathy is a struggling actress, while Jamie is a very talented writer. The unique part of their love story is that Jamie and Cathy tell it from opposite ends of the relationship. Jamie starts from the beginning and tells it through the end. Cathy starts from the end and tells it backwards. We get to see the relationship grow and end over the course of five years.

Texturing the set pieces with different shades bought more life to the set in that, when the stage light hit the set pieces, the set pieces picked out certain colors and highlighted them. The lighting of the show was monochromatic looking where different shades, saturations, and brightness of a single color on the stage were used. The use of monochromatic colors in lighting made the show passionate and moving. It also made the scenery look realistic. One thing that caught my eye was that in the beginning, the town of River City doesn’t seem to have much life until Harold Hill comes to town. This is because in the beginning there is not a lot of color that is seen through lighting. However, the town became more colorful after the arrival of Harold Hill. The show also had day and night lighting, which made it easier for the audience to know the time of day a particular scene was taking place.
