Potatoes are notorious for being one of the healthiest root vegetables and are cardinal to balanced lunches; however, an important question has been tossed into the air: should schools serve Fried Potatoes and Potato Products as a basic part of lunches? Public Schools that serve French Fries and Fried Potato Products are benefiting the Common Core grade point average and keeping the students contented. Potatoes are one of the healthiest natural foods on Earth. Though fries are prepared in oil, there are healthier ways of preparing them. The minerals of potatoes, if they are properly cooked, help students stay fit and full, give them healthy energy, and aid in the challenge of teaching them.
Vigorous benefits of potatoes reach beyond stronger brain activity. Dietary Fiber, Iron, Protein, as well as Magnesium found in the skins of the potato alone and the flesh of the potato contains higher amounts of Manganese, which is good for the heart and helps reproduce red and white blood cells. Schlosser sets off chapter 5: “Why the Fries Taste Good,” in Aberdeen, Idaho at the J. R. Simplot Plant where he introduces John Richard Simplot, “America’s great potato baron,” (Schlosser 111). He feed the hogs horse meat from wild horses he shot himself, later selling them for $12.50 a head. At age 16 Simplot leased 160 acres to begin growing Russet Burbank Potatoes. Soon Simplot was the “largest shipper of potatoes in the West, operating 33 warehouses in Oregon and Idaho,” (Schlosser 113). The beginning of this chapter focuses on the J.R. Simplot Plant which is located in Arberdeen, Idaho and processes around a million pounds of potatoes per day (Schlosser 111). John Richard Simplot was born in 1909 and spent much of his childhood working on his family’s farm. Simplot went against his father and dropped out of high school at the early age of fifteen and began working at a potato warehouse in Declo, Idaho. When J.R. turned sixteen, he became a potato farmer (Schlosser 112). It only took about ten short years for J.R. Simplot to become the largest shipper of potatoes in the West. World War II brought a lot of wealth to Simplot. He sold dehydrated onions to the U.S. Army and he eventually became one of the main suppliers of food to the U.S. American military during World War II (Schlosser 113). By the time Simplot was 36 years old, he was able to grow, fertilize, proces...

School lunches are to provide nourishment for students so they can excel in the classroom and on the field, not leave them broken down and tired for the rest of the day. Poor nutrition standards allow for school lunches to offer the minimum requirement to students. The quality of food is diminished with pesticides and other harmful chemicals, which also does not provide enough nutrients for students’ brains and bodies to grow and mature at a healthy rate, and finally the amount of food given to students is not adequate for every student, because every person is different, the amount of food given to each student should be different as well. Once these things are addressed, school lunch can change for the better and provide the nutrition needed for every student to achieve greatness and someday be a future leader of
