My Values People have very different reasons on why going to college and getting an education is important for them. Some people go to college because that is what is expected of them, and others go because they have nothing else better to do. However, I am interested in going to college and obtaining a good education because it will benefit my family, my country, and me. My parents have this perfect life for me pictured in their heads, and the first thing they see me doing is going to college. They expect the best of me, and so by going to college, I will not only have fulfilled their goals for me, but I will have accomplished one of the goals I have set for myself. In our culture, when parents come to the age where they can't support themselves, it is the duty of the children to look after them. We don't just throw our elders into retirement homes and visit them twice every year. We are expected to meet their wants and needs, and that will not be possible without a good education, which will then lead to a good job. As you know, a college education is good for each individual, but not only that, it is good for the country. As a college education becomes more obtainable through the use of financial aid, our country benefits the most. We are the future businessmen and women of America, and through our knowledge, the country will grow. The education we get today will help us prosper in the future, and the more we expand our horizons, the more the economy will increase. If students are denied an education because they don't have the means to pay for college, then they are deprived of accomplishing their goals and reaching their fullest potential. In the words of Michael Jackson, "The dream we were conceived in will reveal a joyful face, and the world we once believed in will shine again in grace." With the students of today being educated, the people of tomorrow will prosper. Now that I've explained how my going to college is good for everyone else, I must explain why it is best for me. My dreams and aspirations are to be so successful that I am not dependent on anyone else. Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be someone with power. To obtain power, I have to first obtain the knowledge, and to do that, I need to go to college. I have seen people become too dependent on others, and if anything upsets that relationship, the dependent one just crumbles. I don't want that happening to me, so I plan to study hard, make good grades, and be a top executive in a big firm. For me to accomplish that, I will need financial assistance, because my family isn't affluent enough to send three kids to college at the same time. Going to college has been a dream of mine since I can remember, and so I will try whatever it takes to make it there. Getting the financial assistance I need will make things easier for my family and I, so I am applying to many scholarships with the hopes that one of them will come through for me. In addition to this increase of incoming college students, the constant question of “why” does as well. You have one side that says yes! They believe that college is the answer to America’s problems, while the other hand, says that college is not necessarily the answer. There are so many students who would extremely grateful to attend any four year institution but can’t because of the lack of funds. College life can be very stressful, and the process can is very frustrating to most students the first two years. When the cost of college tuition is compared to the 21 century financial economy the cost does not make sense, because for a middle-class family it is impossible to afford sending their child to any four-year institution. It hard for students to graduate with the stress to pay-off hundreds and thousands of dollars in loans. Going to college is stressful enough without the need to worry about how we’re going to pay for it and what other costs will continue to rise with getting a degree afterwards. With the current increase of unemployment rate and the thought of going to college seems like a farfetched goal. Many people choice not to attend a four year institution, because they did receive a scholarship or enough government funding. Having a college background is very important for professional growth, it will eventually limit career opportunities. My stand point is, you may not leave college doing the same thing you began with but the life experience is endless. College experience not only gives knowledge that builds you into a better person by giving a broader erosion. With the cost of tuition increasing will hurt our generation, by causing physical and mental stress but in the end it will all pay off. Emily Dickinson’s poem “Because I could not stop for Death,” deals with the personification of death as an extremely gentle figure, who is escorting the speaker to her deathbed from the carriage. The speaker in this poem is dead for centuries and she is explaining the reader the experience she went through before dying. The main theme evident in this poem shows the inevitability of death and the idea of accepting of death. In the beginning of the poem itself, in line 2, Dickinson establishes a compassionate tone to depict the speaker’s amiable relationship with death when the speaker states “He kindly stopped for us”. The tone highlights the speaker’s acceptance of death and demonstrates how comfortable the speaker is feeling in the presence of death. This idea is further stressed in line three, “The Carriage held but Ourselves,” where Dickinson uses language to portray the speaker’s strong connection with death. The use of diction to stress on the capitalized word “Ourselves” signifies the friendly and exclusive bond between the speaker and death reiterating the theme. The Lines 6-8, “And I had to put away, My labor and my leisure too, For his Civility,” reemphasizes the speaker’s perspective on death. The speaker “has to” sacrifice all of his/her “leisure” and “labor” which symbolizes life in itself to prepare for death. Additionally, rather than discredit ‘Death’ for taking the speaker’s life, the speaker notes Death’s “Civility,” further suggesting that the speaker does not resent death. Having a fascination with the idea of death and dying is often considered morbid. Death is a scary subject that most people avoid thinking about. Yet, death is a subject that Emily Dickinson was familiar with, and often wrote about in her poetry. Her fascination with death was evident in many of her poems, she often wrote of her own death. What happens when one dies? How do they feel? What goes through a person’s mind? These are all questions that go through someone’s mind when they allow themselves to think about dying. In two of Dickinson’s poems, “Because I could not stop for Death –” and “I heard a Fly buzz – when I died,” the speakers depict their experiences with death. Although both poems are about dying, they both differ in the tone and the setting. The details of each speaker’s encounter with death vary; one tells of a deathbed scene and the other of a calm and peaceful ride to a final resting place.
