Vaccinations Then and Now. Seated on that cold hard bed, where many had sat before, I waited. My heart, throbbing. A small, single line of sweat dripping from my brow. There’s a knock at the door, after what seemed to be a lifetime, the nurse, who had left the room only moments before, enters. Her kind face, now seemed menacing. She approaches, slowly, gently grabbing my arm with the coldest hands known to man, or at least it seemed so. For she was about to commit the very act that haunts the world of every 5 year old, the shot. Today, the controversy over vaccinations has become a toxic political issue. Over time, this lividness towards the critical defense against disease has sparked debate and fear. It’s been so long since we as a nation have faced a true biological epidemic. Mass casualty events from disease appear to have disappeared almost overnight. This has led to the belief that we as a race are no longer prone to the hazards we once were. Despite controversy, removing vaccines as safeguard will cause society to become just as prone to disease as we once were. …show more content…

In the 1900’s a group called the Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League was on the forefront of opposing the vaccine schedule. They believed that “from the standpoint of free citizenship, no government should forcibly inflict on any individual enjoying all other rights of the nation, a disease [vaccine], loathsome in its origin, and not free from danger to life, and with, at all events, impairment of bodily health, at least of a temporary nature.” (Albert, 2001) This statement, as short sided as it may be, was in response to compulsory vaccinations, or what we know as the vaccine schedule.
