The Freak of the Week music video by Freak Kitchen exploded onto the internet on October 28 2014 and currently sports 3,391,602 views on Youtube. The short is a beautiful spectacle that utilizes the majesty of classic Disney 2D animation whilst blending it seamlessly with 3D backgrounds. This hairy flying, teeth gnashing tock animation’s origins lie in a Kickstarter campaign started by Freak Kitchen and Disney veteran Juanjo Guarnido, a man who sorely misses the presence of 2D animation in mainstream media. The project launched on February 19, 2014 and earned funding beyond its original goal of 90000 dollars, eventually making 142,674 dollars on March 26, 2014. “2D! Just how did they create this vibrant 2D/3D blended experience, an obstacle even film studios still struggle to recreate? Born in Granada, Spain, Guarnido pursued a field in the visual arts after attending the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Granada. After working in television programming for three years Guarnido moved to Paris in 1990 and earned a job at the French branch of the Walt Disney Animation Studios. During his years at Disney, Guarnido had animated many of the studios animalistic and dangerous characters, such as Hades from Hercules (1997), Helga from Atlantis (2001), Bagheera from the Jungle Book 2 (2003), as well as Sabor, the cheetah, and the titular character Tarzan from Disney’s Tarzan (1999) . He also worked as a layout artist for The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Brother Bear (2003), and A Goofy Movie (1995).
