American fraternities and sororities were created to form groups of men and women who shared common ideals and values. These men and women created groups where they were able to develop close bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. These organizations have developed into what we think of as the college fraternity and sorority. Within Greek life, lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) students are becoming increasingly visible. LGB students within the college Greek life system have been unacknowledged in the past. However, LGB students in Greek life have become a hot topic.

The perception is that if an organization does not portray a hyper-masculine image they will not be able to compete with those groups in recruitment or for the interest of sorority organizations. Hyper-masculinity is likely to lead Greek life students to use “homophobic talk” which is defined as negative statements about gays, including terms like ‘faggot’ and ‘queer’ (Hall and La France, 2007). The uses of terms such as these make Greek life members feel as though they are actively defending their hetero-identity. Homophobic communication is especially prevalent in fraternities because heterosexual men do not want to be appear to be gay with the fear of jeopardizing relationships with other brothers. National organizations should enact a nondiscrimination policy into their organization’s rules if they have not done so already. National organizations should also educate members on their nondiscrimination policy and also LGB issues in the Greek life community through their national conventions and local conferences. National volunteers should also be educated by the national organization and campus Greek life professional to be inclusive towards the LGB community. All of these important stakeholders need to come together to help make the Greek life community more inclusive towards all
