We link arms once more and turned to find the rest of our friends. Three of our friends are in the darkened part of the house and the remaining members of the original group were across the room stuffed into a corner. Compared to the other party, this one was livelier and there were some people holding red cups that came from a place I couldn’t see. Because this party is inside, the room was getting hotter and the amount of people in each room was increasing with each second. As Calvin pushed us through the crowd, I noticed there was a high male to female ratio. Ivy told me in our interview that the frat boys may have felt threatened by Calvin being there because the number of women at the party did not equal the number of guys and they didn’t …show more content…
Though I had multiple experiences at two separate parties in which I engaged in dancing and conversation about the topics discussed, I would not be considered a member of party culture. My efforts to understand and possibly be considered a member of a different culture is similar to Ong’s writing on culture. Ong focused on culture and citizenship within cultures as those in the culture view you. The blackening and whitening of a group of people determined that status and superiority over the other groups. In a less political way, my situation is similar. By becoming more adapt and active within a culture, I have the capability to be a more defined figure within this culture. When asking Ivy about her views on what criteria makes you a member of the party scene, she believed that attending parties once or twice per week, as well as social drinking (if you are of age), and a willingness to network with other members is what defines those associated with the UC Davis party culture. This being said, those that are willing to put in the time and effort to make connections within this culture and adapt to the norms, can be a …show more content…
Knowing that there is a possibility someone in your friend group could be discriminated against based on race and gender. Alyssa made it clear to me that the benefit of meeting new people like Ivy and Layla is what made the possible discrimination worth the risk. Her connection with other people, positive or negative interaction, always leaves her with a positive incite on how to adjust her mindset for the next party. Seeing with her own eyes how Pi Kappa Alpha treated Calvin showed her how to address issues like these in the future and inform her on who to make positive connections with so instances like these never happen again. Through the confrontation, a reason Ivy prefers parties over staying in over the weekends is her ability to be herself in a stress-free state. Unlike Alyssa, Ivy has the option to drink alcohol when she feels she’s in a safe environment and ‘let loose’ and de-stress even
While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. While I am not good at sticking up for myself, something this book has made me feel is crucial to blend in and conform to an ideal to fit into a sorority, I am too opinionated. There are not many sororities (at least shown in Pledged) that welcome girls who are different, preferring to stay similar. For example, each pledge class would soon like identical within a few months of pledging. Another thing I learned about is the careful planning and manipulation that occurs throughout sororities,
Can you imagine yourself being apart of a group or lifestyle, now imagine yourself not fitting in. Maybe some people think you’re weird, but people just like you understand. Many suggest that it’s dangerous while others want to join. Whatever the reason may be you still consider yourself apart of society. As you grow older you realize that many people have different backgrounds and maybe even distinct behaviors. When people feel a deep need for love or respect, values and morals may be forgotten. It’s their customs, rituals, and beliefs that make up their own culture.
In "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture" Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade analyze the social perspective of the gendered relations in male fraternities that add to the high rate of violence against women on many college campuses. They list a host of factors that distinguish higher-risk from lower-risk atmospheres discussing the rates of rape in colleges and state how "1 out of 4 college women say they were raped or experienced an attempted rape" (217). Additionally, "1 out of 12 college men say they forced a woman to have sexual intercourse against her will" (Boswell, Spade 217). In other words Boswell and Spade indicated that the rates were high when it came down to women getting raped in colleges by men who also attended those colleges. In addition, Boswell and Spade specify in how most people are aware of rape but know very little about rape culture (Boswell, Spade 217).
Do people really understand the secrets behind the Greek community? There are many pressures girls face that the public is not familiar with that are specifically evident in sororities. Alexandra Robbins, the author of the book Pledged: The Secret Lives of Sororities, went undercover and followed four different girls during their experiences within the Greek system. Although there are many struggles girls can face in sororities, the five most prevalent type of pressures include: having a perfect body image, substance abuse, stress, silence, and hazing.
If granted the opportunity to become a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. I expected to become a better man once finishing the member in take process. Throughout the process I expect to develop many different skills that I can carry throughout life. I would like to become more professional as well as to enhance my networking skills. I expect to become more hands on in different charity events that I’m not familiar with. I would like to improvement my personal status and security, and the meeting of the everyday demands of living.
Being new to a college campus, I've learned to adjust. I’ve stepped outside my comfort zone and learned to explore various outlets. Little did I know that the college culture didn’t fall too far from the typical high school environment. Subcultures, or what I’d like to call clicks, seemed to be something that transcends from each level of schooling. In college this subculture is known as the Greek system and it is one of the major outlets students use for socializing.
The discourse community I have been studying is fraternities. Fraternities are more than just partying and “hangin’ with the bros.” Fraternities are over 100 years old and filled with traditions, values, and brotherhood. Fraternities have stood strong since the early 1800’s, with rich history and culture. Every fraternity has founding fathers that represent a certain value of the fraternity.
When one first thinks of Greek life or a sorority the only thing that comes to mind is the social aspect. Most people don’t think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture, with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However, these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. Greek organizations are good examples of how institutions can affect and be affected by social status and roles within the collegiate community. They are also a prime example of how race, class and gender can affect a social setting in both positive and negative manners.
according to the article "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?" written by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade.... ... middle of paper ... ... Colleges should hold clubs such as fraternities and sports to the same level as others and be harshly punished for crimes they commit so they don't feel superior and think they can get away with rape. When the penalties are harsher and people are made an example of, then fraternities and sports in college will become safer environments.
When it comes to dating a fraternity guy, you don’t just date the guy; you date the fraternity as a whole, which comes with a few pros and cons. This relationship means that you must go to all of the parties and be there to show that you are a supportive girlfriend, but also know when to give him his space so that he can have his “bro” time. In the time of this relationship you may gain new guy friends who will be there for you through thick and thin, but there will be some times you are going to have to compete for the attention of your guy when he is with his brothers.
Dominant social groups in a society often determine what counts as culture. In the first piece, the writer mentioned how novice teachers and students work. Teachers tend to disentangle race and culture instead of suture those two. They use “cultural” as a catchall phrase to describe cultural student’s misbehavior.
Colleges and Universities play a major role in developing the behavioral patterns of young adults. In addition to developing young minds, colleges help to cultivate character, responsibility, and social acceptable behavior. Students who attend Carlford have expressed their dissent with the current environment of the university. Because of these underling issues, Carlford’s retention rates amongst minorities have suffered. If Kirsten is unable to handle the situation, there will be a trickledown effect to all areas of the university. Being a new professional in the field of Higher Education can be challenge. There are times where an incident directly affects your position and there are other times where there issues that affect the entire institution. Because the issue directly pertains to Greek Life, the Coordinator of Fraternities and Sororities has the responsibility of identifying the concerns and implementing initiatives that will allow the college to be proactive in future situations of this nature.
It brings me great displeasure to write this appeal due to the circumstances of my unwarranted suspension from a fraternity I hold dear to my heart. I became a member of the fall 2015 class falling in love with both my brothers and the fraternity. The past year I formed an unbreakable bond and accumulated numeral unforgettable experiences. I even got the pleasure to read The Phoenix and enjoy the beautiful and adventurous history of our fraternity. This all came to a shattering halt when the alumni of the ILBE Chapter persecuted for violating our Membership Agreement.
Throughout my life I learned to adapt and conform to behaviors that were different form my family’s upbringing. My family initially viewed conformity as a negative thing, but were able to eventually learn to embrace parts of the American culture and have conformed to some aspects of today’s society. The desire to be
