Having witnessed the racism and assimilation in the colonial Antilles, Frantz Fanon devotes himself to the battle for a human world--that is, a world of mutual recognition--where all races are equal. Applying the idea mutual recognition from Hegel to his situation, Fanon believes that mutual recognition is achieved when the White and the Black approve each other’s human reality, which is the capacity to have dreams and to turn them into reality. On the contrary, Friedrich Nietzsche believes the hope for humanity lies in the endless self-transcendence of becoming the overman, ignoring whether one receives acknowledgement from others or not. From his perspective, the overman is better achieved by solitude. Furthermore, Nietzsche bitterly criticizes the advocation of equality which is motivated by revenge against more powerful people. Nevertheless, he fails to realize that there are other situations where fight for equality is crucial to fully claim the humanity of the oppressed people. One of such situations is that for the Black in the colonial Antilles, which Fanon describes in Black Skin, White Masks, characterized by the lack of recognitions from the superior Europeans. As far as I am concerned, mutual recognition is important not only for solving the Black’s problem in the colonial situation, but also for empowering people of different groups nowadays to establish equal relationships, to maximize own potentials, to exceed to become the overman. To be specific, I will elaborate how the mutual recognition theory could be used to free women and men from deeply rooted inequality. First of all, Nietzsche emphasizes that human’s ultimate goal should be state of the overman, who is constantly overcoming himself and destroying old ... ... middle of paper ... ...uture, rather than Nietzsche’s idea of the overman. While Nietzsche focuses on individual excellence, Fanon explains the importance of mutual recognition between two parties with power disparities. You may argue that Nietzsche’s theory about the overman is more useful for everyone’s daily life, but Fanon’s idea which is specific about the colonial situation seems too far away. However, can you imagine a world with millions of overman who is isolated from the crowd, receiving no recognition from others, caring nothing about the discriminated ones? Rather than live in such a world, I would like to apply Fanon’s mutual recognition to daily life, to build equal and win-win relationship with people from other groups. From my opinion, one of such relationships with some sort of stereotype and inequality between the two sides is the relationship between women and men.
In this passage from the novel Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates utilizes meaningful, vivid imagery to not only stress the chasm between two dissonant American realities, but to also bolster his clarion for the American people to abolish the slavery of institutional or personal bias against any background. For example, Coates introduces his audience to the idea that the United States is a galaxy, and that the extremes of the "black" and "white" lifestyles in this galaxy are so severe that they can only know of each other through dispatch (Coates 20-21). The Concept of the veil has been a significant symbol of clearly differentiating from the whites, in aspects of political, economical and social prospects. Durkheim explained symbol as “something that stands for something else”(pg. 135). It is a symbol that calls up shared notions and values. In the example of the Blacks in the south, the veil symbolized an “iron curtain” separating the two races, separation and invisibility, of the black and white. The veil had previously been worn because of previous traditions demanding a clear separation of the sexes. The veil is seen as a social barrier to prevent the “others”, black African Americans, from surpassing into the clean and pure white world. Nonetheless Du bois also states, that its possible for one to, lift up the veil when one wishes, and he can also exist in a region on neither side, white nor black, which shows Du bois’ many different meaning and function with the symbol of the veil.
In Racial Formation, the two authors Michael Omi and Howard Winant develop the foundations for understanding the implications of race. Both authors delve into how the construction of racial relations has permeated into society, been contested, and changed over time. Omi and Winant attempt to display the oppressive actions in social structures, as well as the ideas and meanings that form their theory of race and racism. These theories are demonstrated in the brutal reality of Douglass’ life as a slave in My Bondage and My Freedom. Douglass recounts his efforts to educate himself, and ultimately, his resolve to escape to freedom. Society views race as a function of biology rather than a socially constructed method to differentiate human beings.

After a journey into the dark history of Europe and Africa with Sven Lindqvist, I found myself shocked. It’s earth shattering. Ideas and historical events are presented through a journal/proposal of his unique view on racism. Lindqvist raises questions as to where racism was spurred and why what happened in late 1800’s and early 1900’s lead to the holocaust. Including religion, personal human values, advanced warfare and even societies’ impact as a whole. His travels through the Sahara and Africa in the early chapters show a more current day view of society over seas. The description of the desolate continent and harsh conditions paints a picture of what previous civilization lived through. He explains that part of the reason he has traveled to the desert is to feel the space all around him, a definite emptiness if you will. As his travels progress he introduces his own family life that pertains to the human emotion, which is also a big focus point in this book. Childhood beatings over taking the lord’s name in vain, dropped calls from his daughter that leave him torn and sad. He does an excellent job on taking the reader on a personal journey with him through his current day traveling and even his early life. Linking these personal experiences and tying in histories misconceptions of “right and wrong” is what makes this book so valuable. Lindqvist gives a relevant and educated answer to the question of how racism became such a terrible tribulation in all parts of the world.
Freud defined civilization as the “whole sum of the achievements and the regulations which distinguish our lives from those of our animal ancestors and which serve two purposes-namely to protect men against nature and to adjust their mutual relations” (Freud, Sigmund 42). Oppression is the systematic method of prolonged cruelty and unjust treatment, often intended for those who are deemed “different” by a hierarchical society. It’s a basis that can be found in the plot of a fictional movie or novel, but most importantly, it’s an aspect of both past and modern life that has affected multiple nations. Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, is a humanitarian who embodies the personal experiences of what being oppressed feels like – how it itches at one’s skin like the hatred and stares directed at them. The reason he is so important is because of his stories; what he has seen. The insight and intelligence he has brought forth further educates those who had previously accepted the world with their eyes closed.
A dialectic is the process of synthesizing truth by holding contradictory ideas in tension. Since Richard Wright’s short story “Long Black Song” and Zora Neale Hurston’s short story “Sweat” have opposing arguments they must engage in a dialectic. Both stories examine the oppression of the African American race, but they find different sources for its difficulties and demise. In “Long Black Song”, Silas, while expressing his frustration for the superiority of the white men, articulates that the black woman is the source of African American difficulties. In “Sweat”, Sykes’s encounter with death reveals that the African American man’s arrogance is the cause of the demise of the African American race. Wright’s short story “Long Black Song” and Hurston’s short story “Sweat” engage in a dialectic, in which “Sweat” repudiates “Long Black Song”, and produce the truth that one’s hubris that is the source of the difficulties of one’s race and the demise of oneself.

Oppression caused by the white community results to the actions committed by the blacks, one like watching one of their own suffer at the hands of the former. They don’t retaliate to correct the wrongdoings that the white had transgressed, to making a stop to all the tyranny. Although a black man standing his ground can call for dreadful things, this domination over them will remain permanent until something or someone ceases it. However, instead of trying to work on that objective, they engage in conflicts with each other. As Wright is asked by two people to witness a trial of an acquaintance, he tells them, “You claim to be fighting oppression, but you spend more of your time fighting each other than in fighting your avowed enemies” (368). Blacks, in some way or another, claim that nothing will stop the harassment, but they don’t fight this injustice; they just cope by comforting themselves by thinking it’s just how life goes. Blacks have a sense of hopelessness within them after an excessive amount of suppression done by the whites, in which the blacks don’t know what to do anymore with this predicament. They had lost the light in the tunnel, and gave up. On the other hand, Wright makes the readers know that fear exists within the black community, which was the result of countless incidents inflicted by the whites. They would rather spend their days engaging themselves in the black community’s problems, that wouldn 't matter in the long run, instead of coming to a compromise with the whites, or confront them at the least, for they are scared and had seen what the latter is capable of. Wright also wants them to see it from his perspective, that the manner they’re representing won’t solve anything. The mindset the blacks had established in regarding the oppression from the whites is not an effective method of eradicating it, rather they are letting the problem be, allowing it to develop and have its roots so
Throughout Douglass’ autobiography, readers grapple with the rise and creation of slavery as a racial formation but also witness the distinct features that detail its crumbling for the near future. It is a process that offers a linkage between structure and racial representation. Douglass touches base that “it was not color, but crime, not God, but man, that afforded the true explanation of the existence of slavery” (69). He already knows that the slave masters are the individuals who developed this categorization of race and embedded into the societal perception of today. Omi and Winant attempt to give an outline in their piece on the foundations of racial meaning. In other words, it was man who decided to develop distinct characteristics to separate individuals into inferior and superior. Douglass states that “what man can make, men can unmake” (69). The idea of being accepted in the coloured society at the time was to be to adhere to the customs and culture pertaining to the native. If singing a tribal song was a proud part of some African cultures, the second and third generation slave children who were hybrids did not find their old customs appealing which created a void in an already fragmented African society. The notion that a black child and a white child had the same level of thinking and understanding between them because they followed the same set of rules and aspirations made it a grave task for the other to stay true to his/her culture as the fight between which culture to adopt, adapt and discard created discord between a few sections within the other.
