Have you ever wondered why the world is so important to how we see ourselves? The world is important because it influences how we view ourselves through our own personal experiences and society’s standards. In the story Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the creature feels isolated because he has no one and because of his fear of rejection from the cottagers who he admires. In my opinion, the world around us contributes to our sense of self by reflecting how others see us. I will support my claim by using creditable evidence from Frankenstein, various internet sources, poems from class, and/or personal experiences. “My person was hideous; my stature gigantic.” I can relate to the creature’s feelings of loneliness for acceptance because I often struggled to fit in with others. I felt that I would get treated differently by others because of my own ethnicity and how different I looked compared to them. I always yearned for friendship and felt a deep desire to be understood and accepted for who I truly am. The creature admires the cottagers; he thinks of the cottagers as kind people. However, the cottagers aren’t aware of his existence, but when they do, the outcome is what the creature feared would happen. “Who can describe their horror and consternation on holding me?” (Shelley 593). The cottagers feared him for how he looked when they encountered him. They feared the unknown and it affected the creatures’ feelings about how they thought of him. “But my heart sank within me as with bitter sickness I refrained.” (Shelley 593) Frankenstein is the creature’s creator; the creature feels as if Frankenstein needs to make him a companion because he feels isolated that he has no one there for
