The articles “Frankenstein” and “Man-Made Monster” convey the theme “We should not judge people by their appearance.” Both articles include several examples of this saying. Most of the examples are in the passage “Frankenstein.” Another way of expressing this is “We should not judge a book by its cover,” mostly because the story is represented by the monster’s face. Just by seeing it people would think that the monster is an evil creature, however if they read the story they would realize that it’s not even a little bit dangerous. According to the passage “Man-made Monster,” the Frankenstein monster is a man-like creature created by a mad scientist named Baron Victor von Frankenstein. This tremendous creature had been assembled from the
limbs and organs of cadavers. This science-fiction story was written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in 1818. The story was first put into words in Switzerland on a stormy evening in 1816. The monster was said to be incredibly tall, yellow-eyed, and having skin-like parchment. On the other hand, in the movie Frankenstein, the monster’s appearance was astonishingly monstrous. Just by looking at such monster, people would think it’s evil and dangerous. And indeed it happened. As stated in the article “Frankenstein,” when the monster escaped from the oubliette he’s been kept in by the Baron, he was harassed by the misinformed villagers. They thought he was dangerous and evil because of his looks. The monster, scared, ran away and met an old blind man, who treated him nicely and carefully. The monster didn't have any instincts to harm the old man. For in spite of his horrible looks, he has a nice and caring heart.
In Lisa Nocks article appropriately titled “Frankenstein, in a better light,” she takes us through a view of the characters in the eyes of the author Mary Shelly. The name Frankenstein conjures up feeling of monsters and horror however, the monster could be a metaphor for the time period of which the book was written according to Nocks. The article implies that the book was geared more towards science because scientific treatises were popular readings among the educated classes, of which Shelley was a member of. Shelley, whose father was wealthy and had an extensive library, was encouraged to self-educate, which gave her knowledge of contemporary science and philosophy, which also influenced Frankenstein as well as circumstances of her life.
In Volume 1 and 3 of Frankenstein, Victor’s reason for creating the “monster” changes drastically; however, ultimately leading to the same consequence of suffering and depression. Through this change in Victor, Shelley argues that all humans have an instinctive notation of right from wrong and learn from their mistakes. Victor left his friends and family to go to college; when there, he had no friends and social life. His top and only priority was his schoolwork; he read all he can about the sciences, especially chemistry and anatomy. When finished with his studies, Victor is ready to start his creation when he confirms his proceedings aloud, “Winter, spring, and summer, passed away during my labours; but I did not watch the blossom or the expanding leaves-sights which before always yielded me supreme delight, so deeply was I engrossed in my occupation. The leaves of that year had withered before my work drew near to a close; and now every day shewed me more plainly how well I had succeeded.
Also, the people thought that everything should be perfect and natural within the world and not ugly. Even though the monster was considered ugly, he was also smart, sensitive, and compassionate. In other words, you should never judge a book by its cover. Meaning that the people he met has judged the surface of his face instead of learning about him more.
Victor Frankenstein was the creator of the monster in the book. He was an ambitious man who had high hopes and dreams for himself, but this characteristic was the cause of his downfall. He had a ruthless desire to obtain forbidden knowledge- a knowledge that only God was worthy of having. This lead him to lock himself in his laboratory, disregarding his family, friends, and health. Throughout Frankenstein, one assumes that Frankenstein’s creation is the true monster. While the creation’s actions are indeed monstrous, one must also realize that his creator, Victor Frankenstein, is also a villain. His inconsiderate and selfish acts as well as his passion for science result in the death of his friend and family members and ultimately in his own demise. Throughout the novel, Shelley investigates the idea of monstrosity. She makes the point that a monster does not have to be genuinely evil in order to be considered monstrous.
In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein we are introduced early in the story to one of the main characters Victor Frankenstein and subsequently to his creation referred to as the monster. What is the definition of a monster, or to be monstrous? Is a monster the classic representation we know, green skin, neck bolts, grunting and groaning? A cartoon wishing to deliver sugary cereal? or someone we dislike so greatly their qualities invade our language and affect our interpretation of their image and physical being? Throughout every individuals life there are experiences of unfair judgments based on someone’s appearance. While this is never a good thing, it is an action that everyone takes part in, whether it is purposeful or not. Written in a world of social, political, scientific and economic upheaval it highlights human desire to uncover the scientific secrets of our universe, yet also confirms the importance of emotions and individual relationships that define us as human, in contrast to the monstrous. Here we question what is meant by the terms ‘human’ and ‘monstrous’ as defined by the novel. Yet to fully understand how Frankenstein defines these terms we must look to the etymology of them. The novel however, defines the terms through its main characters, through the themes of language, nature versus nurture, forbidden knowledge, and the doppelganger motif. Shelley also shows us, in Frankenstein, that although juxtaposing terms, the monstrous being everything human is not, they are also intertwined, in that you can not have one without the other. There is also an overwhelming desire to know the monstrous, if only temporarily and this calls into question the influence the monstrous has on the human definition.
