Management has to deal with a variety of different forces that pull and push their businesses in a number of direction. It is basically like an obstacle course, there are new things that he or she might have never dealt with, or challenges that will arise that will test management’s abilities. Management as a whole focuses on four key functions. The four basic functions of management include planning, organizing leading and controlling. Managers have five major functions to perform, namely planning, staffing, organizing, controlling, and coordinating. The first function of management is planning. "Planning is systematically making decisions about the goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or overall organization will pursue." (Bateman & Snell) In my organization, planning takes up the most time. Objectives must be laid out, potential products must be examined and the timing and type of marketing must all be planned out before we provide our product to our customers. This function should be first and foremost to all individuals involved in the organization. Poor planning will result in your organizations demise.
Diversity within a company will benefit the company’s bottom line and help the company to keep the competitive edge (McCuiston, et. al., 2004). Improving the bottom line can be also be improved by retaining employees and improving customer service (McCuiston, et. al., 2004).
