Over the years, we have often told lies or made promises towards other people. My question is, “Why do we lie and make promises? What is it that motivates us into doing them?” People lie because they’re afraid of facing their responsibilities. People make promises with others because they want to be seen as trustworthy. I believe that people maintaining their sense of responsibility is important because it is to their advantage of fulfillment. If people are afraid of facing their own responsibilities they will not be able to get anywhere in life.
Lying towards other people can cause the person to be seen as irresponsible and untrustworthy. People should not lie because it’s like running away from their responsibilities. …show more content…

Keeping promises reveals that a person is capable of being a trustworthy person. Being a trustworthy person shows that they are responsible for maintaining one’s trust in them. An example that shows one’s capability of maintaining trust and responsibility is within the ballad, “The Cremation of Sam McGee” by Robert W. Service when it states in the story, “So I want you to swear that, foul or fair, you’ll cremate my last remains.” (Service 20). In this scenario, dying Sam McGee’s last breathe is that he asks his partner Cap, the narrator of the story, to cremate his cadaver when he dies. Cap, agrees to this regardless of how grotesque the request is and keeps his promise by saying, “A pal’s last need is a thing to heed, so I swore that I would not fail;” (Service 25). This line reveals Cap as a responsible person and is capable of gaining one’s trust. Another piece that shows that it is important to maintain one’s responsibility is from another stanza line in the ballad, “With a corpse half hid that I couldn’t get rid, because of a promise given;” (Service 25). This stanza line is showing Cap’s motivation of maintaining his responsibility by cremating his companion’s frozen cadaver. Keeping promises like Cap did showed that it considered an act of responsibility and since it is it important to maintain our responsibility, it can also act as one’s driving force.
