Those old enough to remember the gas shortage of the 1970s will realize what could happen if we run out of fossil fuels without a viable alternative. Today, fossil fuel reserves are getting harder to extract and are of lower grade and insufficient volume to meet global demand. Concern about fossil fuels and their effect on the environment are becoming more important. So how can the United States lessen its dependence on fossil fuels? To truly solve the problem, it will be necessary to change much of our infrastructure as well as our day to day practices regarding transportation, food and electricity.
Transportation will need to be changed both in how we use it as well as what type of fuels are used. Food production, storage and transportation will all have to be modified. Electricity will also need to be changed both in how it is generated, as well as how we use it day to day.
When most people think of fossil fuel use, they think of personal transportation. There are many ways to reduce your transportation energy use. For short distances, walking and biking are healthy alternatives to using a fossil fuel using vehicle. In many areas, public transportation can also be an option. Electric cars are also an efficient alternative in the right areas. The biggest issue with electric cars is the ability to charge the vehicle away from home. Another concern with these vehicles is their limited driving range. Buying a diesel car to reduce your dependence on fossil fuels is another alternative. Diesels can run on biodiesel fuels or entirely from non-fossil fuel based ingredients. ...work. Changes in how we grow and transport our food will also help. Reducing our usage of electricity while also reducing the source of the electricity will also provide huge benefits. There are many other areas where improvements could be made, but these areas I believe would provide the greatest impact on reducing our fossil fuel dependency.

The number of miles traveled by cars has risen nearly 150 percent, yet the United States population has only grown roughly 40 percent during that time (hybridcars.com, Driving Trends). Although it may seem like we are advancing into the future, in reality, we are moving backwards from the effects these vehicles have on our bodies and the environment. The pollution produced by these vehicles has brought us to the day where we must find other modes of transportation that cause less harm to the world in which we live. Advances in technology have developed hybrid vehicles to try and slow down the amount of pollution. Driving a hybrid vehicle, instead of a conventional gas powered vehicle, can reduce the amount of pollution that affects our lives and the environment around us.
People can also reduce the use of fossil fuels by doing simple things for instance switching off lights and appliances when leaving the room. These days, we use fossil fuels to power everything- homes, buildings, cars, computers, lights, etc. However, fossil fuels deposits will run out soon, which is a huge problem. Extracting, transporting, and burning fossil fuels are dangerous. There are also many negative biological and environmental impacts that result from the use of fossil fuels, such as ocean acidification, groundwater contamination, land subsidence, oil spills, and global warming. Therefore, we should be trying to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and explore alternative energy sources such as wind energy, hydroelectricity, and solar energy instead. Our world depends on fossil fuels, but they can also hurt us. Fossil fuels are both a blessing and a curse.

Given this projected growth, it is necessary for world leaders must take action to secure the energy supply. About 68% of the electricity generated was from fossil fuel (coal, natural gas, and petroleum), with 37% attributed from coal” (U.S. Energy Information Administration). The fossil fuels that are used to supply over half of our country’s energy are in finite supply and are increasing in price to astronomical heights.
Industrial and technological mechanics are used to power the world. In order to do this, fossil fuels have been the sole source for most of these mechanics-such as buildings, vehicles, electricity, etc. However, as mankind progresses in these advances, the demand of power sources increases with each given year, thus the world’s fossil fuel reserves are depleted at an alarming rate. In addition, the continuous use of these non-renewable resources results in deadly implications. Although fossil fuels are a suitable source of energy, renewable resources are essentially a better form of energy because it is renewable, it is eco-friendly, and it brings economic benefits.
Fuels like coal, and oil that once were a fine innovation in creating energy are now rapidly deleting and one day will be gone forever; energy that won’t last is often referred to as non-renewable energy. Besides being set up to fail and become inefficient in the future, fossil fuel energy is not clean to use and poses several environmental complications. Coal, for instance is “the dirtiest of all fossil fuels. Coal combustion not only produces sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides that contribute to acid rain and snow, it generates millions of tons of particulates that cause asthma and other respiratory diseases.” As with all usage of fossil fuels, it creates enormous amounts of carbon dioxide, which contributes to greenhouse gas.
