Fortunate son is a song by a band name Creedence Clearwater Revival. The song talks about the difference between kids that belongs to rich families and kids that belongs to poor families. In the verse writer says, “Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand”. Kids that were born in a wealthy family stay rich. They can do whatever they want just because they are rich. In the song, the singer also talks about how the kids that belong to rich families do not have to join the military. They can go to college and get a degree on a full time study. However, kids that belong to poor families are forced to join the army and fight for the country. Rich kids are privileged but poor kids are not. In the song it says, “It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't
no military son, son… It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, one.” Basically they are trying to show how African Americans have no right. They are so different from white Americans. And this verse shows from an African Americans perspective. For example how they feel when they are treated differently just because they belong to families that are poor. They were born poor and they will stay poor. They do not have a right to get education and degree because they cannot afford it. And on the other hand rich kids are going to school/colleges to get a better education, get a degree, and get a job. So they are never out of money and stay rich.
Florida Georgia Line consists of two country singers, Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard. Ever since the two met at college, their careers have taken off. Florida Georgia Line is well known for its hit, “Cruise” which has had over one million downloads sold and topped both country radio charts. Due to this success, a remix was created with Nelly. This original song was released in 2012, and is part of the album, “Here’s to the Good Times,” whereas the remix was released in 2013.
I have chosen to do two songs waiting on a woman by Brad Presley witch the whole song makes a gender stereotype about woman always making a man wait. The second song I choose to do is George Straits A fathers Love which enforces it’s hard to be a father and what a good strong dad role model is. Both songs spoke to me in different ways.
Feeling unwanted from the closest people in your life who turn away from you when you need them the most, is the worst feeling a person can endure. I chose the song “My Story” by Sean McGee, because people young and old can relate to his song. People from different backgrounds can relate to each other when there are living homeless or raised as a foster child. Sean McGee wrote “my daddy don’t know, my momma don’t care, it don’t matter if I’m here, it don’t matter if I’m dead” people all around the world have the same issues and share a common culture. A master status is the most important status a person occupies, this is a key factor in determining a person’s social position.
My first song I´ve chosen is Sean McGee, song titled My Story. Mainly the song is about him facing different struggles, obstacles, and all the horrible things and situations he´s been in throughout his life. I can connect to this song and the lyrics for many reasons. One of his lines were ¨Do you know how it feels to be left out in the rain¨? And I have faced times like this when I feel like no one is there or have my back, and in the line he´s trying express how it feels to have nobody and be all alone. Also throughout this song he expresses how everyday you wake up your face with something rather it's just a minor issue or something that will greatly impact your life.
Certainly, being born into a privileged family have their advantages. Unfortunately, for those who are born into poverty may struggle for their success, but it is not impossible. The podcast “Three Miles” is a great example of that. Comparatively, on the surface Melanie and Raquel are two individuals coming from the same unfortunate circumstances. Although, both girls were introduced to the same pen pal program their outcomes would travel different courses. Initially, the purpose of this program is to give students from poor neighborhoods a glimpse inside their wealthier counterpart’s lives, from another school. Raquel and Melanie’s backgrounds were similar, because they were afforded the same opportunities, but they turned out differently. Raquel was driven while Melanie is unambitious.
Jolley uses characterization to individualize each character in a poverty stricken family. The son is referred to as a prince by his mother several times throughout the story even though he is a high school dropout. “Mother always called him Prince; she worried about him all the time. I couldn’t think why. He was only my brother and a drop out at that” (117). The author portrays the son to be someone with low self-esteem because he is poor and a drop out he lives a miserable life. His mother tries to provide him with as much, but is unable to do this because of her social status is society. “‘Sleeps the best thing he can have. I wish he’d eat!’ She watched me as I took bread and spread the butter thick, she was never mean about butter, when we didn’t have other things we always had plenty of butter” (117). Through this passage the author convincingly demonstrates that they are poor and cannot afford an assortment of thing...
"In The Air Tonight" is a strophic composition produced by Phil Collins. The aria consists of an electronic drum set an electric guitar and a prophet to add an additional fullness to the song. The exposition of the monody is at an adagio tempo. The electronic drum kit repeats a drum pattern with 12 drum hits in each loop, while accenting on every third beat {eg.1-2-1-2-1-2-1-22-1-2 | 11-2-1-2-1-2-1-22-1-2}. In the middle of the first loop the electric guitar roars a triple stopping that drags on for fifteen seconds, and is quickly followed by the sound of a nymph sounding guitar riff in the background accompanied by the prophet. The prophet presents the main melody of the song. A series of warm instruments accompany the drum pattern followed by the sound of Phil Collins's tenor voice reverbed a tad to add an eerieness to the song. He first announces in a slightly whispered, muffled voice:
In this case, talent can be and is represented by what you have been given and or your socioeconomic status, and if you don’t work hard, someone else who works hard should be given opportunities regardless of their “talent” or lack thereof. The Socs have been handed a lot and were born into the higher end of the socioeconomic spectrum and choose not to work hard. Darry, on the other hand, wasn’t handed a lot and was born on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum, but he chose to work hard so he should have gotten a chance at a future. However, society judges promise on wealth and “talent”, neither of which Darry has. Darry works as a roofer, causing injury to himself, to ensure his own and his family’s survival. But as a Greaser, nothing he does matters, or even deserves to matter. He worked hard in school earning him a scholarship. Even more so, he balanced getting those good grades with being on the school football team. His hardwork and his balance between athletics and academia earned him a scholarship. But even with his scholarship, he couldn’t afford college. But, he didn’t give up. Then, in a fatal car crash, his parents die, removing any chance of him being able to go to college for at the very least the near future or more likely, the rest of his life. But that wasn't all. Lutie is another example of meritocracy, the mother of eight-year-old Bub living in an apartment in Harlem who works hard as a singer. She wants upward mobility, which is why she accepts Boot’s job offer when asked to join his band. The night after singing at Junto’s bar, the downfall occurs when Lutie realizes that she is not being paid for her singing service, as promised by Boots. “‘When will my salary start? And how much will it be?’ She couldn’t wait any longer for him…She looked at him anxiously, conscious of a growing sense of dismay…This was worse than being back where she started because she hadn’t been able to prevent the growth of a bright optimism that had pictured a shining future” (Petry 303-305). Money and support symbolize upward mobility. Lutie is grieved about the news of not getting paid yet because she sees the singing career as a way to transcend herself out of poverty. This is the turning point of the story where she acknowledges that being the only hardworking member in her family will not translate into upward mobility. She gets no support from anyone, compared to Walter, who is getting support from his
The poverty that poor black Americans experience is often different from the poverty of poor whites. It is more isolating and esoteric. It fans out of family homes and inundates the entire neighborhood; the streets, the schools, the grocery stores, the community centers. A poor black family, in short, is much more likely than a poor white family to live in a neighborhood where many other families are poor. Creating what is called the "double standard" of poverty. “The sense of privilege that he [Marks], a multi-generation white class guy has to share his wisdom with all of those ‘poor black socially-orphaned children out there in the West Phillies of the world’ is astounding” (DNLee 256). Assuming that those children have no direction is a misconception that many white privileged Americans assume. And that assumption is why the life chances and opportunities of people of color in the United States are limited as compared to whites. Place continues to be a defining characteristics of the opportunity structure. Children growing up in more privileged neighborhoods often ponder what they will do when they grow up; as were poor children ponder on if they will even have the opportunity to grow up. The privileged are so blind that even they do not realize it, and they do not see that others are not privileged. As Cinderella’s privileges and opportunities were taken from her, her chance at the ‘good life’ was too. The element of the good life, however defined, is only accessible to those who are
Aside from the mother’s race and gender, her lack of education also plays a role in the hardships in her life. Hughes makes her limited education apparent in his use of her vernacular. Words like “ain’t” and “I’se” (MS lines 4, 9) symbolize the fact that Mother is from a Black background and she does not have sufficient education. These limitations, however, do not keep her from persevering and keeping a positive paradigm. She wants her son to realize that, though they may not have the best education or a more advantageous skin color, they must strive to overcome these hardships to reach their higher potential.
Most everyone in America would like to achieve financial success. Sometimes living in a capitalistic society entices many to become too materialistic. Greed is the characteristic that many Americans then attain. This is all in pursuit of the American dream. For most Americans, this high status is very difficult to achieve. In Arthur Miller's, Death of a Salesman, we see how difficult it was for Willy Loman and his sons to achieve this so called American dream, and these people were proud white Americans. In Lorraine Hansberry's ,A Raisin in the Son, she examines an African-American's family's struggle to break out of the poverty that is preventing them from achieving some sort of financial stability, or the American Dream. It focuses on Walter's attempt in "making it," or "being somebody." She also analyzes how race prejudice and economic insecurity affect a black mans role in his own family, his ability to provide, and his identity. What Hansberry is trying to illustrate is how Western civilization has conditioned society to have materialistic aspirations and how these ideals corrupt the black man's identity and his family.
Johnny Cash can be considered one of the best country artists of all times, but the soul of his music is rooted in the blues. Many of Cash’s songs are about the complications that come with love. The four songs listed above are only a few parts of the story Cash teaches us about the world of love. Most importantly, Cash does a wonderful job of explaining the complicated nature of love and how it really is the most powerful force in the world. Before diving into each of these songs, one must first understand how Cash is a blues artist just as much as he is a country artist.
Having a family of low socioeconomic status inevitably leaves me to reside in a low-income neighborhood which makes it more likely for me to witness the tragedies, adversities and hardships that people go through [not excluding myself]. Being conscious of this kind of environment, and these kinds of events, creates a pressure on me for having the aim to achieve social mobility in order to escape the aforementioned environment so that my own children could witness one less abominable aspect of life. Moreover, my family’s low socioeconomic status does not authorize me the privilege of being raised with the concerted cultivation method that kids of high socioeconomic status are more prone to being raised in. My family did not have the financial resources that granted us access to extra classes or lessons of instrumental classes, swimming practices, karate practices, or any other extracurricular activities that people of high socioeconomic status would be able to afford. This invisible fence that prevents me from these extracurricular activities enables me to having more appreciation towards the hobbies and talents that other people have. Plus, the fact that my family’s low socioeconomic status acts as a barrier from enjoying expensive luxuries in life creates a yearning [in me] to enjoy them later on in my life, in addition to acting as the fuel to my wish of achieving social mobility in anticipation of providing my own children with the luxurious vacations, gadgets, beachhouse, new cars that I could not
Responses to Amazing Grace Amazing Grace is a legendary song” published in 1779”(www.princeton.edu/-achaney/tmve/wiki100/docs/Amazing-Grace.html) that is also a poem where there are verses in this poem that suggest that the composer John Newton (1725-1807) was going through a pivotal point in his life and he felt that by writing these harmonic verses in rhythmic metaphors could captivate and inspire not only those that read “Amazing Grace” but especially everyone that listened to its meaning. Conviction can come at a time when it seems you are most likely going to die from an act of God, and all the wrong that someone has done becomes a consciously enormous burden when they start to consider what the after life may have as punishment or reward. There are many different responses to this poem. Most of the responses are positive, but when you look at the author John Newton’s life you will start begin to understand the gist of what he is saying and the meaning behind them.
