In the poem “For the Sleepwalkers” by Edward Hirsch. The narrator talks about his admiration and fascination with sleepwalkers. “ I love the way Sleepwalkers are willing to step out of their bodies into the night”. What I felt the author was saying; is that sleepwalkers are brave trusting because of how they are unaware of their surroundings but always seem to make it back home safely. The tone of this poem was very calm and flows very smoothly. I personally like this poem because of its positive and uplifting message which is trust your heart. Using literary devices such as: imagery and diction really help the reader connect with the poem and its message, while also providing the reader with a visual of the environment the author has
Without the use of stereotypical behaviours or even language is known universally, the naming of certain places in, but not really known to, Australia in ‘Drifters’ and ‘Reverie of a Swimmer’ convoluted with the overall message of the poems. The story of ‘Drifters’ looks at a family that moves around so much, that they feel as though they don’t belong. By utilising metaphors of planting in a ‘“vegetable-patch”, Dawe is referring to the family making roots, or settling down somewhere, which the audience assumes doesn’t occur, as the “green tomatoes are picked by off the vine”. The idea of feeling secure and settling down can be applied to any country and isn’t a stereotypical Australian behaviour - unless it is, in fact, referring to the continental
As depicted in the poem "Kicking the Habit", The role of the English language in the life of the writer, Lawson Fusao Inada, is heavily inherent. As articulated between the lines 4 and 9, English is not just solely a linguistic device to the author, but heightened to a point where he considers it rather as a paradigm or state of mind. To the author, English is the most commonly trodden path when it comes to being human, it represents conformity, mutual assurance and understanding within the population. Something of which he admits to doing before pulling off the highway road.
Kim Addonizio’s “First Poem for You” portrays a speaker who contemplates the state of their romantic relationship though reflections of their partner’s tattoos. Addressing their partner, the speaker ambivalence towards the merits of the relationship, the speaker unhappily remains with their partner. Through the usage of contrasting visual and kinesthetic imagery, the speaker revels the reasons of their inability to embrace the relationship and showcases the extent of their paralysis. Exploring this theme, the poem discusses how inner conflicts can be powerful paralyzers.
I personally loved everything that this poem stood for. I liked that this poem had two average people at its center. They were not young or insanely beautiful, but they still showed how amazing love can be and how love goes beyond everything. When it comes down to it love has no gender, age, race, or time it is just about humans loving other humans. In this week’s chapter it is discussed how romance itself has a huge cultural impact and this poem definitely connects with this idea. This poem also follows the cliche of love. The way that love is blinding and will conquer all is presented in a real and believable way, but then it can also be considered unrelatable for some because how romance is set up to be and how high the standards are for true love. Furthermore, I like the idea of love going beyond age, beauty, and time but realistically for most people they will never experience a love so intense. People can though understand how what is portrayed in the media is not how everyone experiences love and that people who differ from this unrealistic standard can still be in love in their own intense beautiful way.
The death camp was a terrible place where people where killed. Hitler is who created the death camp for Jews. The death camp was used for extermination on Jews. This occurred on 1939 – 1945. The death camps were in the country of Europe. Hitler did all this because he didn’t like Jews and the religions. The book Night is a autobiography written by Elie Wiesel. The poem called First they came for the communist written by Martin Neimoller is a autobiography.
“Janet Waking”, written by John Crowe Ransom, forms a double sonnet about an eight year old girl called Janet, who has recently received her pet chicken. In the morning of a peaceful day in the outskirts of town, a young girl faces the anticipation of a morning interaction with her new pet chicken. She wakes up from a dream to go into a nightmare after she finds out that her chicken had gone to an eternal sleep. Through the transitions, the visual imagery, the dark irony that forms this double sonnet, a reader can comprehend that death can be a harsh reality to a child that faces it for the first time.
The poem is effective because its states very evidently what the situation is between the author and the other person. The theme is strong and fits the situation the author is going through and makes you and the author have many different emotions going through your head. At the same time it makes you think about your real life situation how you would react if it happened to you. The poem includes a tone, metaphors, alliterations, and repetition,
Imagine you are a woman in the 1600’s, one small mishap and you could be falsely accused of being a witch and put on trial. This hypothetical is similar to the story of Mary Webster, she was a normal girl living in Massachusetts with her family, then at the age of 60, she was put on trial, was verbally abused by the judge, and sentenced to hanging. Remarkably, she survived the night and earned her title “Half-Hanged-Mary.” Similarly, The Handmaid’s Tale explores thematic topics of oppression as the characters Offred and Moira are treated poorly as handmaids; they are forced to reproduce and give up their children to wealthy families.
What attracted me to this poem was how the poet wrote the poem as an allegory to tell the story of war. This poem is very effective and has many meanings.
The title of the text is 'Zombie March,' and it is about a (now dead) husband who returns to his wife's home, but then faces rejection because death signifies the end of marriage (MacNabb, 2012). Following this, the husband gathers other zombies and starts a political movement (MacNabb, 2012).
The first couple times I read this poem it seemed cluttered and in disarray to me. I found this poem to be a bit burdensome and frustrating because I had trouble interpreting it. After further review and reading this poem a few more times I began to realize there is more to this poem then what I originally perceived there to be. I found this poem to be cunning and very creative.
The memoir I selected was Everything You Ever Wanted by Jillian Lauren. She describes her troubles as a college dropout, a drug addict, and a harem member; then she talks about how she turned everything around when she married a rock star and adopted an Ethiopian baby boy with special needs. Her tone gives off vibes of strength and courage. All throughout the memoir, she also expands upon her own experiences as an adopted child, and how adopting a child herself (after many failed pregnancy attempts) made her see the world in a new light. To begin, Jillian’s style is very casual.
Silent as the Dead War, what is it good for? Well, I believe we all came to the same conclusion about 40 years ago. Milla Harrison explores the works of Wilfred Owen and James Fairfax who figured out the futility of war even before that! Ask yourself a question; where would we be today without the thousands of brave soldiers who gave their lives to make yours better? The answer, I believe, is quite clear.
It points out that death is inevitable and sadness overcomes us and wants to take over, making our lives take drastic shifts. And even though we fall we can always get back up by being strong and courageous. This poem also contains a rhyming pattern of ABCB that gives the poem a sort of bounce and happiness to it even though it talks about dark topics. The reason why I loved this poem was because it made me think but i could still understand what the writer was trying to put across. I also connected to the poem in every stanza and got to connect it to my experiences.
Everyone has relationships. Some are platonic and some are romantic. One of the most sacred relationships is marriage. Marriage is a union of trust, but sometimes there are reasons when that is broken. Infidelity can damage relationships and change them. Once you cheat on your significant other, your new lover holds the power of a dark secret over you. E.E. Cummings show that relationship dynamics change quickly through his use of form in his poem “may i feel said he”.
