Football has had so many historical moments from the time it’s been started it makes it incredibly hard to pick and choose the specific events. Typically from the day football has been one of America’s most fascinating choice to watch and be an audience of. Most other foreign countries call football soccer and have a different name and perspective of it. American football has so many moments and my historic players that have brought so much to the game and left an impact.
As far as the game of football it has evolved tremendously evolved as far as being America’s favorite game. When the game of football had just began people weren’t so aware of it and how much attention it’d bring to people once it blew up. On the professional level football has grew incredibly as far as money, viewers and importance. A man by the name of “Walter Camp” was considered to be the founding father of American football. Being a Yale graduate was not the only thing defining how intelligent and creative this man was, what he brought to the game and how he put together the rules also did. Not only professional football grew, but college football did as well. With college bowl games being a tradition it attracted many people as an

audience and drew people’s interest to support even more. The game of football is very important itself, but where would it be without the people making historic moments and keeping it going. Many great athletes have brought a lot to the game of football with giving it many historic moments while entertaining the audience. Players such as “Ronnie Lott, Emmitt Smith, Ray Lewis and etc.” have brought so much to the game. All though we love the game of football money comes into play a lot and even more today as the game has passed time and rose to the next level. Contracts back when the game had first started were absolutely poor as to the game just being started and it hadn’t made much money. Today in the twenty first century money has came into so much of a big role players will do something what called a “hold out”. A hold is a player taking the action and basically saying that he’s worth more money than he’s being paid and will go elsewhere if not pleased. By the eighteen eighties most athletic clubs had a football program and were being heavily underpaid with poor equipment and protection. For college football it has been a very success and has overcome so much adversity to be where it’s at today. College football has had also had a lot of greats come through and went to the next level. With that being said a trophy we all call the “heisman” was created years ago to show appreciation to these players based off the fans votes. The heisman was created in the year of nineteen-thirtyfive to a man by the name of “Jay Berwanger. Every since then the heisman has been one of the most exciting moments to see some of the greatest players get compared to one another with their incredible talent and play making ability. Personally I don’t the heisman can really define the best players, because college football is filled many tremendous athletes. The game of football has came a long way from leather helmets and thin un-protective padding.
Many people have suffered life long injuries due to the way old padding was made and the player were poorly equipped. Since when the game has started scientist and equipment specialist have worked hard and increased the safety of the game today to make to a lot better for the players. Years ago it was easier for players to get conscious and etc.. As years have went on helmets have had extra padding, shoulders have been more reliable and the way of hitting has been changed to prevent life threatening injuries. When people began to suffer from real bad injuries the game began to improve so much about protection people started getting penalized for certain tackling
forms. Professional football developed in the 1890s in the states of Pennsylvania. A man by the name of Jim Thorpe help bring the sport of football up from the start by participating in everything to help get it noticed to people around the world. Professional football proved itself being a viable sport in the 1900s with the Ohio football league. In the year of 1920 August 20, the owners of the Ohio league teams got together to establish a new professional league. Jim Thorpe was nominated president of the new league and shortly after that they had met again to form something else new. When Thorpe drew crowds in and got viewers attention not only did it increase the income for the sport but get people all over’s attention. Professional football was growing real fast and this only was the beginning . For professional football it has been one of the largest growing sports due to it starting with four teams and now today we have thirty-two.
America’s newfound favorite pastime, football, came from a bizarre chain of events. Football started when a soccer player got fed up with just kicking the ball, so he picked up the ball and ran to the goal. His actions of picking up the ball and running with it fathered a new European sport, rugby, which was soon brought over to American shores, and was altered slightly, the shape of the ball and a few other small rules. The sport became organized into a league and produced the NFL(National Football League). The NFL had a slow beginning, but has picked up popularity, currently having a $9 billion yearly revenue.
First, the rules that are enforced are a great way of making the game safe for the players. There are rules like, not being allowed to tackle certain ways. For example, if you tackle someone from the back by pulling them, then that is said to be an illegal tackle. It is also said that it is illegal for someone to pull on others facemask when tackling. There are many others rules that are enforced in the game. Another one is the rule that says, Head to Head is not allowed. What that basically is that you cannot tackle someone by contacting your helmet to the opposing player. This rule makes it greatly safe because it reduces the numbers of injuries that occur to the head and the neck. The head is the key part of the human body. When someone hits another player with the helmet in the head, it reduces the risks of concussion and that can result to serious and severe body failures, including being...
Now don’t be confused on the word football, since I am not talking about “soccer” at all. Football which is otherwise known as the NFL or the National Football League, is an American based sport that involves thirty-two teams from cities all over the country that compete against each other through strategy and strength in order to reach one goal; to win the Super Bowl.
Stats for the football leagues are a big deal for fans. Fans are obsessed with numbers its a big deal for the fans. In 2001 there were 150,000 athletes that were injured at the age of nineteen and younger. In 2009 there were 250,000 injured athletes at the age of nineteen and younger. There is a 6.3 per 1,000 incidence a college player will suffer a concussion while a high school athlete has a 11.2 per 1,000. Risk of concussions in football is high and equipment should continue to improve, but rules should stay the same in order for the game to remain
The brute force of the game is what draws millions of people around to the world to come and watch. However, what millions of Americans don't see if the consequences of what makes the game how great it is today, the hits. With players getting bigger faster and stronger it only leaves players in more danger of getting injured. Concussions are one of the most common injuries among NFL players mainly because of the constant contact, and how the design of the helmet is to protect against major head injuries, not concussions. CTE is common in many NFL players, and most former NFL players. A study by the national institute for Occupational safety and health found that, “the brain tissue of 59 of 62 deceased former NFL players tested positive for CTE” also when studying, “the causes of death of 3,439 former NFL players concluded they were three times as likely as the general population to die from degenerative brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's”(Karaim). However there has been remarkable facts on how CTE has been found in NFL players more commonly than any other sport the NFL refuses to acknowledge that there is any correlation between player who played professional football and CTE. Because of this direct correlation of football and CTE many players are unable to work of fully function after their career as a professional
American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. After their team plays, they will go out and reminisce what happened that Sunday. While thousands of fans are still pumped from the NFL games they watched; small towns across America are getting ready to shut down their shops and restaurants to have the chance to make it to the local high schools football game. Ray Glier, a reporter for the New York Times, writes about football in the small town of Appala...
American Football, in my opinion, represents the mass majority of our society. Though I am not a fan of the game, it is exciting to watch Super bowl Sunday. Because of my background, I was more accustomed to Soccer which is consider a version of Football. I would agree that American Football is a metaphor of the US. For example, begin a conversation in the grocery store and merely states what you think about that game last night? This would strike an immediate conversation until you out the door. Before you realize, you may get an invite to a tailgate party or game night that’s if you are on the same team. Though football plays a major role in business and many other social aspects. It represents the strength of this country, as well unifying
Football can be traced by rugby and soccer. Walter Camp is the “Father of Football” (Bennett). The first American football game played in the 1860’s (Bennett). Football has a lot of history in the game. The rules are important to the game. The beginning of the National Football League is still going strong today. Strategies and formations of the game are important to study. Football is an aggressive sport and is one of the most played sports in the United States.
Sport as a whole has changed in relation to the contemporary American economy by its constant growth and push for revenue. It has become a sort of “you scratch my back, I scratch yours.” type of relationship. I say this because of the amount of time and attention invested into making sport something that appeals to all people of American society rather than just the fans of the action itself. The constant negotiations for television deals, sponsorships, competition with other TV shows, and programs for time slots available within a network all play a large factor.
In the world of sport, soccer and football with respect to demographic has had numerous controversies. Although both sport are known famously around the globe, for many years fans from both sides are known for asking, is American football same as soccer? What’s the time limit on both sports? What’s the game objective? Do they use the same ball? However they both have similarities and differences which I will be talking about in this essay.
Sports affect major institutions of society, including the mass media, politics, religion, education, and family. The Super Bowl gathers thousands of viewer’s attention, including those who do not usually watch the regular season games. Football is by all means an American sport. Since the day a baby is born in America, whether it be a boy or a girl, one of the first words they learn to say is ball, and after a few months they add the word foot in front of the word ball, and by the time you know it your baby boy is playing football, and your little girl is cheering “Go Steeler’s go!” and without intention their cultural identity starts.
In the modern day United States the sport American football has become not only entertainment but also a tradition whether it’s watching the BCS college championship or watching the super bowl with the family. The sport of American football is unique to the United States and has grown and became iconic over the years and has become a part of many Americans lives. American Football was made in 1869 and was modeled after the sport of rugby. They took the basics of rugby and changed it to make it fit better for them. The game has changed over the years but it also affected many Americans as the tradition of Monday Night football has begun. The game has had problems with the United States government as it was said to be too dangerous to play, this lead to an upgrade in the equipment and they tried very hard to make the equipment well ensuring player safety throughout the sport.
Soccer has a important place in the history of several countries. It is the most popular sport in the world. I will be exploring soccer’s place in American history and how it has been growing in America throughout the years. I will explore how soccer got to America and how it has spread across the nation. These questions and more will be answered as I explore soccer in America.
Players receiving hits below the waist, which is enforced in the game to prevent head to head, lead to those major injuries. Also, it can affect that player in the future by fearing of breaking that bone again or affecting their life as they get older. It should seriously be considered being regulated more to prevent those crucial injuries.
American Football is not merely a sport, its a culture. In the south football is in some ways a lifestyle. From the rivalries to the championships its truly one of the most exciting sports to have ever been created. This is why I love it so much, it is much more than just a game it has a much deeper meaning to it. From the outside looking in, many people do not fully realize the impact it has on each and every player throughout its history. Football has made me who I am today.
