There have been many experiences that all led up to my decision of majoring in Food Science. I believe my passion for food is the number one reason; even as a little girl, food equality at the dinner table was important! This thought process continued into fourth grade, when I discovered that one of my classmates never had food for snack time because her family couldn't afford it. In sixth grade I started my own "Party for the Pantry", where I held a birthday party and asked for food donations instead of gifts.
During my years in middle school, I also started volunteering at the local Food Pantry Garden. I learned a remarkable amount of information and skills by gardening, and started really understanding how much my work was benefiting people in my community. Volunteering became a serious passion of mine, and my interest in helping others has increased tremendously since.

I competed in this event, which was centered around viscosity. I didn't realize how easily I actually understood this event until placing first at State that year; I took this realization to heart, although I didn't think any further about it. It wasn't until my sophomore year that I went back to Food Science as an event. I picked it up with a friend of mine only a few weeks before the State competition, which gave us very little time to complete numerous tests and write-ups! Despite the short time period, we placed seventh at State. Once again, my interest in food science was peaked; I made a goal that for my junior year, I would put a lot of dedication into this
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. I believe food science has given us
Michael Pollan makes arguments concerning the eating habits of the average American. Pollan suggests, in spite of our cultural norms, we should simply “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.”
I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. My volunteering experience allowed me to experience the environment and face situations that I otherwise would not. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality and lifestyle that many individuals in our society face today. My time at the food bank and Soup Kitchen helped me understand the importance of giving, ...
My interest in plants came through watching and helping my grandmother in her gardens. Last summer, Jacksonville's historic Cummer Gardens needed workers, so I began volunteering there for several hours each week, planting new flowers, removing old ones, mulching, and weeding. My work there has inspired me to volunteer in other public gardens, such as those in libraries and nursing homes, in the future.
It was so fun when I am being a volunteer. In that time, we would went to a charity every week. We would designed some activity to the elderly; or, we would tell them what should they eat to being healthy. Also we would do some exerciser together. Just to make them happy and feel like there still have a lot of people care about them, they are not alone. Besides, I have been to Sichuan to teach the children whose family can not support them to go to school. After this trip, it made me more and more desirous to be a nutrition because they are obliviously malnutrition. In my country we always said that “it’s more blessed to give than to receive” so I do like to help them.
The chemistry of the human body and how it is affected by food is one of the main reasons why I became interested in nutrition. I really enjoy applying scientific knowledge to food and seeing how it can harm or benefit individuals and that is what nutrition is all about.
Every time I do some kind of service – I have the opportunity to learn new ideas, discover new perspectives and I've have grown as an individual. By giving back I like making people feel as though they matter, and it gives me a good feeling at the end of the day because I feel I have made a difference. I grow as a person each time I do volunteering. Some people do volunteering because they have to, but I do it because I want to. I love volunteering.
The first time I started volunteering was last year and it changed my perspective towards a lot of things; from the way of looking at people to how my mind works. The impact it's had on my life has been immense and life changing. From there, I constantly tried getting myself involved in giving a hand and at the same time, to widen my knowledge.
By 2015, the World Health Organization foresees that there will be 2.3 billion people overweight and 700 million people will be obese.1 In food psychology, psychologists are studying the mental process for why and we eat certain foods. To us, we may think of the food that we eat from a biological perspective. However, researchers are learning that the decisions we make on our eating habits are based on our perception of food and other social and environmental stimuli that surround us. The primary purpose of this paper is to examine what influences our choices on the foods that we eat.
America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
Biotechnology in food uses genes of plants, microorganisms and animals that have desired production or nutrition related characteristics. The tools that are used in food biotechnology include traditional breeding ,such as cross breeding, and many modern techniques that have to do with using what is known about genes or orders for specific traits to better the quality and quantity of plant species. Food biotechnology modifies the production of fruits and vegetables that ripen on the vine for a better fresher taste. Different type of foods also benefit from food biotechnology .Foods that are developed using biotechnology are studied very carefully and judge by many governing agencies, health expects and scientists all over the world. Biotechnology can assist in the improve ment of the safety of food by reducing the naturally occurring toxins and allergens in different types of food .Food biotechnology is one of many tools farmers and food producers can use to give a food supply that is affordable, safe, convenient and sustainable
Food labs are great technique for experiencing and learning the right method for preparing healthy and clean food. For some people like me, who have no cooking experience it is very challenging, stressful, and enjoyable. I used to think that cooking is just adding variety of ingredients together, but it is more than that. Through the first two food labs I discovered that there are many things that people have to remember and watch for when cooking such as managing their time, planning a head, following proper knife handling techniques, following proper measuring techniques, following kitchen safety, and following the recipe. Also, through this food lab, I have faced some challenges, success, learned a lot of things, and discovered the roles of some important ingredients including salt, pastry flour, sugars, fats, baking soda, and eggs.
These experiences have afforded me opportunities to demonstrate my gifts and talents that had previously gone undiscovered. Through different community service opportunities, I either learned something new about myself or I was reassured something. These qualities include that I am creative, reliable, open-minded, passionate, and an effective team player. Community service changed my life by developing my character through enhancing my transferable skills, which allowed me to see the world differently. Everyone, from all walks of life, needs to in some way, shape, or form give back to the community because it will not only benefit the less fortunate but it will benefit the volunteers as well. Additionally, I learned about the wide variety of resources available to help the community. There are so many resources out there that people are ignorant to like certain shelters and food banks. Ultimately, community service taught me the greatest gift I could ever receive, how to be
... and nutritious experience by giving people actual experience to see, feel and taste what is nutrition about (Hegler, 2010).
