Food Chemist (Career Paper) Some people think of chemistry as boring. Others believe it to be boring. Even some consider it both. So whenever a job with the title “chemist”, a lot of people just skip over it without even seeing what it really is. There is one job, however, that can make these naysayers rethink their opinions. That would be a food chemist. Although the name could be slightly misleading, it pretty much describes the job itself. Basically, food chemists create new foods and drinks, and also modify some current foods. Although this may sound simple, it is actually more complex than some may think. A big job of theirs is studying ingredients in certain foods. In order to create new foods, beverages, and flavors, food chemists have to substitute, rearrange, and alter these ingredients until they come up with what they are looking for. (“Chegg.com”). It most definitely is not as easy to become one as it may seem. For an entry-level job, mosts food chemists are required to have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, food chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, or food science (Academic Invest: Career Guides & Jobs L Canada & US). Just having a bachelor’s degree may not sound like too much work. However, that is only the minimum requirement for a basic job in food chemistry. If food chemists wish to do their own research projects or teach others, they would most likely need to have a master’s degree in food chemistry, or a field closely related to that like organic chemistry (Academic Invest: Career Guides & Jobs L Canada & US).
