The food bank at the AOC, called Sandy Lanier Nutrition Center and Nutritional Counseling, is only open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 12 pm to 6 pm (AOC, 2017). The need to have the food bank available 5 days a week would benefit the individuals that are not able to get to the nutrition center to utilize the benefit of the counseling and getting the nourishment that they are needing. The individuals could be sick, have other appointments, visiting family, or in counseling during those times and days. If there were more volunteers able to be there and assist the community and allow the extra days and times, where the donations could be accepted, more individuals are available to get the needed nutritional items to make the meals to assist in the side effects of the retro-viral …show more content…
The additional hours of counseling and training of the individuals in the proper amount of food and the way that they eat could limit some of the side effects and they could feel better in a time. The sign in sheet that is already there for the individuals and the survey that could be obtained from the volunteers and the individuals would be a successful way to track if the additional hours and days are beneficial for the community. The donation of vouchers for the grocery stores that are in the community would also benefit the community for the organization. There are so many that I see when I go grocery shopping that have this purchase a bag of food for Children Network, Feed a child, Help the hungry, and humane society. The groceries stores would consider a program that would benefit the organization also benefit the grocery store as well to get more business. Though they are doing an amazing job tackling the hunger issue and spreading knowledge regarding hunger in America, there are two areas that may require adjustments.

Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. Letters, emails and phone calls soliciting for donations along with providing an awareness of the need to assist the homeless individuals. To co-workers, associates, local providers which provide services to the homeless population, advertising it in my email’s signature page, Face Book, conversations with some community members such as the Columbus House, United Way, Whalley Avenue Special Service District, and local distributors in the City of New Haven and speak to local business; including a request to WTNH Channel 8 Community News to provide a television segment to encourage the community and other organizations that can make a contribution with products or monetary donations to the need of the project. In addition, if there is not enough donations to continue this project in the future, fundraiser of home made lunch meals, will be implemented. Why are there families with children that go all weekend without a meal while our grocery stores are overflowing with food, and our pantries at home have more than we need? If more people were educated about the reality of hunger in East Tennessee, then more people would be inclined to help resolve the problem. Through education this issue can be eradicated. There are ways to better inform East Tennesseans about the realities that plague our poverty stricken population that are ultimately avoidable. Volunteering and making donations to the food pantries and organizations in the area are two of the best ways to support the less fortunate who need aid. In East Tennessee, hunger is a much larger problem than most people know and could be reduced if more people were educated about it, new ways were found to promote feeding the hungry, people volunteered and donated.

Hunger may ultimately lead to malnutrition, where one is unable to eat sufficiently enough to meet basic nutritional needs. According to the World Food Programme (2014), hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to health worldwide — even greater than the combination of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. There are over 842 million undernourished people who are suffering from hunger and malnutrition worldwide, everyday. That means that one in eight people do not receive enough food to be healthy and lead active lives (World Food Programme, 2014). Fortunately, hunger and malnutrition are easily solvable, though everyone must work together to permanently bring an end to it.

Food insecurity and poor nutrition is an alarmingly large problem for low income families, especially in developing countries. Many strategies exist to fight this problem, although not many of these address all the factors contributing to it along with all the possible solutions to solve it. In many cases, multiple strategies must correlate and work together so that all the determinants of this issue are addressed and can fight food insecurity from different angles. This essay will discuss the significance of the problem, a range of possible strategies to solve the problem, and go into detail on a select few that will correlate and work together to solve different factors of food insecurity and poor nutrition.
