In keeping with our current awareness of followership, none of the authors in The Leader’s Companion debates the importance of followers in the leader-follower relationship. However, some (discussed below) differ in their definitions of followers and in their focus on the role of followership. This essay attempts to draw together some key ideas about followership, taken from several authors in The Leader’s Companion, with a focus on Robert Kinney’s contributions to the study of followership. Next, I will discuss some of Kinney’s subsequent work and his continuing contribution, not just to our evolving understanding of followership, but to its practical applications in a variety of contexts.
The introduction of the article explains all the important aspects of the study; the study is about using the bona fide group aspect to examine leadership. A followership is a process by which the individual performs the role of a follower or a supporter. These people would support the leader’s or the company’s goals and ideas and work towards achieving these desirable objectives (Uhl-Bien, Riggio, Lowe, & Carsten, 2014). The focus of Kelly’s Typology of Followership is on the followers’ behavior and thinking elements. Kelly described different types of followers: sheep, alienated, yes person, survivor, and effective supporter. These categories also connect to dependent and independent critical and uncritical thinking. The model states: followers are more or less productive participants in the company’s activities and more or less in the critical thinking processes (Bjugstad, Thach, Thompson, & Morris, 2006, p.309). A recent article with regards to leadership discussed the topic of group cohesion and how this is a factor for success. The article discussed several situations, one about a business company, one about a sports team and one about a military operation. The article closely analyzed the leaders of the three situations and discussed the similarities and differences between the three. The main similarity between was there focus on cohesion. For this goal to be achieved, mutual cooperation and cohesive behaviour is important. Whatever the leader does, affects its followers. Issues can occur when becoming a leader. These issues can be external, internal and from the challenges of leadership itself. External challenges can mean lack of funding, opposition from community, interpersonal problems or competition from other organizations. Internal challenges can happen based on our emotions such as fear, lack of confidence and insecurity within the organization. Challenges that arise from leadership itself are simply based on the responsibilities that are carried by the leaders. With too much responsibility, one can become burdened and pressured which can lead to issues within the organization.

A perfect example of a positive-minded person is that of Billy Jean King who was a tennis player. Every time that she made a mistake and took a wrong swing using her racket while playing tennis, she always tried and gave a correct swing immediately even during televised tournaments. She was able to identify her mistakes and accept them with a positive thought working on it hard and having a perfect result (Kellerman, 2008).
The fourth characteristic is being open to new ideas. Strong followers give input and contribute, but they also realize that good ideas can come from others as well. Listening to what others have to say can be extremely beneficial to the team as a whole. It is important for followers to listen with their ears and their mind.
Danielsson (2013) conducted a series of interviews and focus groups with the purpose of gathering views on followership from followers and found that there are many kinds of followers whose roles are made up of many unique parts. These findings support the idea that there are various follower types necessary to the organization, and that each brings its own strengths to the team. Another quality observed in effective followers is courage and honesty (Kelley, 1988). Honest followers can keep a team and organization safe from unethical issues, admit to mistakes, and share in the success of others. This strengthens the team, builds unity, and results in higher levels of morale.
From this, one could have specific expectations and it 's their duty to have the ability to properly provide the essential elements that will lead to the success of themselves and other that are involved. In an organization there are many moving parts and it 's important to understand where each individual is expected to perform. Currie (2014) states that "effective followers also know whose work is made possible by their own and are mindful that the quality and timeliness of their efforts are crucial to the success of others" (p. 16). The follower in a workplace must have the ability to collaborate.
Organizational leadership is the balance between what is optimal for the group, as well as, independent individuals ("Key Components of Organizational Leadership," 2015). From a personal viewpoint, it could be described as method in which manager’s foster people, no matter their title, to be a leader. This is because organizational leadership is both an art and science that unites both employees and organizations ("What is Organizational Leadership?," 2014) But who becomes defined as a leader? The following essay will discuss the 3 general factors that define a leader, which include the characteristics of the leader, the behavior or style of the leader, and the characteristics of the followers/situation.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions.
