A flowering garden in the spring crafts conceptions of fertility, beauty, and bliss. Certain people are similar to plants: some are functional, others radiate beauty, while the worst are those that kill. Not all plants are welcome such as the purple flowers from the Judas tree that should be kept at bay from the hearts of the tender because of their morbid connotation. The symbolic flowers represent death or betray in literature, as is the example of the character Engino in “Flowering Judas”. Laura has many people who love her, although she denies them. For instance, the suicide of Eugenio internally haunts her as she places guilt on herself for allowing him to die, even though she envies him. As James Walter claims in “Revolution and Time: Laura in ‘Flowering Judas”, “Ironically, the prisoners desire to escape the static and timeless condition that Laura desires to enter”. She misleads the men into thinking they will be safe and happy, even though there are hitmen out for their blood. She then realizes she will become a betrayer of everything if she cannot change her ways because she cannot commit to any ideal, purpose, or person. The Judas tree is synonymous with the biblical character, Judas, who hanged himself in the purple tree. The flowers on the tree represent distrust and danger. Laura gives a young suitor a flower from her Judas tree hoping he will leave her alone, but instead he’s proud of the gift (Page 315).The flower in his hat eventually withers down to a dead shell of what was supposed to be love but expresses lies. Her actions symbolize she did not truly want him to pursue her. The miscommunication may not have been intentional on the surface, but her subconscious mind allowed her to, once again, delude her true intentions behind well-meaning actions.
The allusions to the bible, the symbolism in nature, and the sardonic characterization of Laura wrap into the central theme of a beautiful lady on the outside, corruptly deceiving the world. In this scene, the marigolds represent the only hope the people had for themselves in this time of depression. This could reveal how the author has experienced a loss of hope in times of need. In her explanation of how Lizabeth had torn up the flowers and destroyed all hope in that time of depression, she might explain that she has also destroyed hope in a time of pain and grief. Later she writes, “And I too have planted marigolds.” This could mean she has learned from her experiences and that she has finally found hope and always tries to seek the good within the bad and the ugly.

The pear tree for example is similar to that of the Garden of Eden. The pear tree and the horizon signify Janie’s model of a perfect life. In the bees’ interaction with the pear tree flowers, Janie witnesses a perfect moment in nature, full of energy, interaction, and harmony. She chases after this ideal life throughout the rest of the book. Janie’s romantic and idealistic view of love, seen in her reaction to the pear tree, partially explains why her earlier relationships are not successful. As the book opens, the first scene the readers are introduced to is the bleak image of a throng of people surrounding a prison door. To create the mood of gloom and sadness Hawthorne uses words such as “sad colored” and “gray, steeple crowned hats,” to describe the clothing of the towns people. The prison stands for sin and an authority that does not condone the deviance from the Puritanical severity of law, and next to the prison door grows a wild rose bush. The single red rose that grows from it serves as a symbol of passion and the two combined, indicate that the prisoner has been incarcerated as a result of the sin from passion. Also, Ann Hutchinson, who disagreed with the severity of Puritanical teachings and was imprisoned, plays a small part when Hawthorne references her name by mentioning it was possible the beautiful rosebush sprang from her steps. This is an implication of the rigidness of Puritanical authoritarianism and ties the beliefs of the prisoner to those of Ann Hutchinson. The rosebush is also link to the forest and it is mentioned that the rosebush could be a remnant of the former wilderness which once covered the area. The forest surrounding the town is the only place in which Puritanical laws are not abided, and the fact that the wild rose bush and the forest are connected gives the audience the idea that the two were somehow combined. The rosebush symbolizes Hester Prynne and the fact that it is a remnant of the wilderness foreshadows much of Hester’s character and behavior. Last, the rose bush is in full bloom which indicates that Hester is in the prime of passion. The result of this passion is the birth of a child. The child can also be compared to the blossoms and serve as a “moral blossom”, making her a key player in the actual moral of the story.
Betty Smith’s novel A Tree Grows In Brooklyn is a tale of poignant family relationships and childhood and also of grim privation. The story revolves around the protagonist of the story, young Francie Nolan. She is an imaginative, endearing 11-year-old girl growing up in 1912, in Brooklyn, New York. The entire story revolves around Francie and the Nolan family, including her brother Neelie, her mother Katie and her father Johnny. An ensemble of high relief characters aids and abets them in their journey through this story of sometimes bleak survival and everlasting hope. As we find out, the struggle for survival is primarily focused against the antagonist of this story, the hard-grinding poverty afflicting Francie, the Nolan’s and Brooklyn itself. The hope in the novel is shown symbolically in the “The “Tree of Heaven””. A symbol used throughout the novel to show hope, perseverance and to highlight other key points.
Although imagery and symbolism does little to help prepare an expected ending in “The Flowers” by Alice Walker, setting is the singular element that clearly reasons out an ending that correlates with the predominant theme of how innocence disappears as a result of facing a grim realism from the cruel world. Despite the joyous atmosphere of an apparently beautiful world of abundant corn and cotton, death and hatred lies on in the woods just beyond the sharecropper cabin. Myop’s flowers are laid down as she blooms into maturity in the face of her fallen kinsman, and the life of summer dies along with her innocence. The evidence supporting this interpretation is the imagery of hiding. The narrator uses the garden to hide from reality and the changes of growing up. When she no longer can hide from reality, she tries to hide from herself, which leaves her feeling disillusioned and unsure of who she is.

In the beginning of the novel, it is also evident that Francie takes great pleasure in books and reading which displays her childlike wonder. The idea of imagination and childlike wonder is very important to Francie as a character because it shows the reader that even though she is in this very difficult situation, she is still a young child having to deal with people in her community shaming her family. Mary Rommely, Katie’s mother, also discusses the importance of imagination with her just after Francie is born. She tells her “the child must have a valuable thing which is called imagination. The child must have a secret world in which live things that never were. It is necessary that she believe.” The theme of gender difference is also an important part of the story. Normally in a household, the man would be in charge of the house and finances, but because of Johnny’s alcohol problem, Katie must become much stronger and take control in the house. When he asks what she gives it to him for, she replies, “A—souvenir.” Then she hands it to him, almost as if to show him that he had shattered her unique beauty. This incident changed her in the way that a piece of her innocence that made her so different is now gone. She is still beautiful and fragile like the menagerie, but just as she gives a piece of her collection to Jim, she also gives him a piece of her heart that she would never be able to regain. Laura and her menagerie are both at risk of being crushed when exposed to the uncaring reality of the world.
When Amy Denver sees the wounds on Sethe’s back that she received from her time in as a slave, she translates them from something gruesome and representing of pain and oppression to a symbol of growth and beauty. This, of course, is not the first time that trees seem to exhibit beauty but actually represent pain from the past. For example, in the first chapter of the book, Sethe describes Sweet Home as one of shameless beauty, saying that: “it never looked as terrible as it was,” and “made her wonder if hell was a pretty place too.” She remembers the sycamore trees as the “most beautiful... in the world,” despite the fact that she also remembers the dead bodies of children that hung from them.
Laura started off in a bubble, and has lived in it all her life. She has been protected from the real world, so she has never experienced the effects of betrayal, poverty, or labor, let alone death, which she does get to experience, by the end of the story.
