• I think the content of this book, the pictures, are appropriate for the intended age level. The main character, a young boy, is relatable to the young reader. It is easy to feel a connection with this boy, as it could easily be you. The boy isn’t doing something that the intended age group couldn’t do; he is simply playing at the beach with his family. The colorful and detail oriented illustrations make it easy for the intended age group to understand what the story is about.
• I definitely think this book was written for children. It is an adventurous story about a boy that discovers an underwater camera floating in the water while playing at the beach. This particular medium seems very appropriate for the story, as it offers bold, vivid colors, but in a soft and sweet way. The mood of the story is fun and adventurous, and the “free-spirited-ness” of the watercolor technique matches perfectly. The story isn’t heavy and harsh, just like the watercolor isn’t.
• The illustrator uses rectangle boxes, outlined in black, within the pages of the book to extend the meaning of the story. The boxes are used to divide scenes and occurrences within the story, while showing them on the same page. I believe this is done to show how quickly everything is happening. This technique makes me think these occurrences are fast paced. One second he is looking at a crab, and next he is hit by a wave on the beach. The color used in this book seemed to have been chosen to extend the overall bright and adventurous theme.
