Summary
Flipped follows the love story between Julianna Baker and Bryce Loski. Flipped is told through both perspectives of the teens. The story begins with Bryce moving across the street to Juli Baker. Juli immediately grows love the boy, from the first moment she sees him. Unsurprisingly seven-year-old Bryce doesn't love her. Julianna begins embarrassing Bryce - without realizing it - by following him, waiting for him in her front yard, etc. All these things occur through the childhood years of both Julianna's and Bryce's life.
Finally, Bryce has had enough. Now, a preteen, Bryce asks out the girl Juli hates the most, Shelly Stalls. This pauses Juli's affection for him, but when Shelly finds out Bryce is just using her she ends things.

Once word gets around to Juli, she immediately goes back her stalking ways. In the six grade, Bryce uses Juli to his advantage. While, being placed in a seating chart, Bryce is seated next to Juli. This allows him to cheat off her work, and his grades are amazing. However, Juli is then placed behind him and his grades begin slacking. Juli feeling bad, whispers the answers to him, in return Bryce doesn't say anything when Juli begins to sniff him - even though he is beyond uncomfortable. Bryce, unknowingly fuels Juli's affection for him this way. Her feeling for Bryce are at an all time high. Things are halted when Juli's favorite sycamore tree is cut down. Juli tries really hard to save her favorite tree, she protest and stays up in the branches for hours, but she eventually climbs down and the tree is cut. Juli becomes depressed and has no time to focus on Bryce. Bryce feels bad, but he didn't help Juli when she asked him to climb the tree. Bryce contemplates this for many days. Lots of things changed when Bryce's grandfather - who have since moved in with the Loski's - takes a liking to Juli. This beyond annoys Bryce, considering his grandfather didn't even play with him, and here he is helping Juli fix her yard. Juli has slowly come out of her depression, when her father gives her a painting of the sycamore tree. Juli puts up her painting, so she will always see what the tree that represented her. The whole, Juli and Bryce relationship, takes a wild turn during the eighth grade. While in the library, Juli overhears Bryce and Garret, his friend, making fun of her mentally challenged uncle.
From what Juli hears, Bryce is laughing with Garret - who is saying her whole family might be mentally retarded. In reality Bryce gets very angry, but he doesn't want to lose a friend so he just laughs it off. This is a terrible decision. Especially since, Bryce begins to realize he has feeling for Juli. This is the flip, hence the book's name Flipped. Now that Juli is angry, she does everything in her power to forget, while he is doing everything to get her to notice him. The roles have switched. him. Everything comes to head at the eighth grade luncheon.
In this the eighth grade boys are auctioned off. The money earned, would be used to help benefit the school. Bryce is very shy, so he hates this event. Bryce beyond hopes that Juli bets on him, he is disappointed to see that Juli bets on Jon. Jon was getting embarrassed in front of everyone, since no one was betting on him - this is why Juli bet on him. Bryce was now fought over with Shelly and Miranda, ending with him gaveling a date with both. While on this date Bryce can hardly pay attention, as his attention is to Juli who is sitting in the other side of the room. When Shelly and Miranda get into a food fight, he sneaks over to Juli and asks her if she likes Jon. When Juli says no, Bryce is relieved and he attempts to kiss her. Juli panics and moves him aside, while she run away.
This results in Juli hiding from Bryce for a while. Bryce, on the other hand tries everything in his power to talk to her. One day Juli is talking with her father when she hears a sound out front. When she goes to look in the window, Juli see Bryce digging a hole, in her newly cleaned front yard. She angrily goes out and stops abruptly. She finally sees what Bryce is doing, Bryce is planting Juli a sycamore tree. This is when Juli realizes Bryce has changed. The novel ends with Juli and Bryce planting the tree together.
Critique Wendelin Van Draanen has written some very remarkable characters. Julianna is a very realistic character. She represents what every woman has gone through. All women have had their first love, and we have all acted a little crazy. "I chased Bryce up the walkway, and that's when everything changed. You see, I caught up to him and grabbled his arm, trying to stop him so maybe we could play a little before he got trapped inside, and the next thing I know he's holding my hand, looking right into my eyes. “My heart stopped. It just stopped beating. And for the first time in my life, I had that feeling. You know, like the world is moving all around you, all beneath you, all inside you, and you're floating. Floating in midair. And the only thing keeping you from drifting away is the other person's eyes. They're connected to yours by some invisible physical force, and they hold you fast while the rest of the world swirls and twirls and falls completely away." (18-19) Van Draanen has truly have captured a young girls idea of love well. Not only has she captured Julianna's innocence well, but she has also gotten her naive personality down to the bone. Bryce is written exceptionally, as well. Van Draanen has obtained the innocence in Bryce as well. Bryce is a young boy, who has grown annoyed with his neighbor Juli. As well as women, men have once sealed with someone liking them. Especially during ones youth, boys still haven't matured enough to like girls back. It is a wonderful thing, we get to see Bryce grow from hating Juli to falling for her. Flipped has many themes, my personal favorites included: Prejudice, Courage, and Family. Yes, there is more, including the obvious Love as one. My favorite theme, that Van Draanen has written within her novel is Prejudice. The most obvious example of prejudice is Bryce's father. Mr. Loski was a very sad excuse of a man. He made fun of the Bakers and their poor income. “Why? Sure. They’re trash, that’s why. They’ve got a beat -up house, two beat-up cars, and a beat-up yard.” (83) Another theme is Courage, Juli is very courageous. Juli portrays courage when she stands up to the men, who want to cut the sycamore tree down. She even reaches out to her classmates, but they refuse to join in. "Hey, guys!" I called to my classmates. "Get up here with me! They can't cut it down if we're all up here! Marcia! Tony! Bryce! C'mon, you guys, don't let them do this!" (81) The final theme is Family. There are two central families within Flipped. The two family's are the Baker's and the Loski's. Readers see these families go through their highs and their lows. I believe Flipped is one of the cutest novels I have read so far. It is a very cute coming of age novel. You follow Julianna and Bryce from childhood to young teens, it is heartwarming to see them and their thoughts on other shift. Once Bryce and Juli get older you see them mature greatly. Juli begins realizing Bryce is this high knight she once thought, while Bryce begins seeing Juli as a beautiful young women who he was to busy hating to notice. "All I've ever wanted is for Juli Baker to leave me alone. For her to back off—you know, just give me some space." (1) While the love plot is a little cliche, it is still a great novel. I love the different themes embodied within its pages. Wendelin Van Draanen has a great eye for concept. The novel she has created is a very nice coming of age story. It follows two young narrators, readers see their perspective of events. This is key considering everything has two stories, and in this novel we see both. We see both narrators go through family problems and we see them grow up. This novel is cliche, but it is a great cliche novel.

Expanded and strengthened state private insurance companies are to be expected since more younger Texans enter the market thanks to the premium support. Texas can expect savings through more proper use of medical care, lower numbers in Medicaid, and savings from increased recipient cost sharing. Texas must refuse to comply with the new high-risk pools. There are many reasons Texas should not comply but the main reason is poor design. Currently, eighteen states have decided not to participate in these pools, Texas is undecided. Any person with a pre-existing medical disorder whom has been without insurance for six month will qualify. The law gave the Department of Health discretion in determining with conditions qualifies. Theoretically, the Department of Health could say the flu is a pre existing medical condition. If Texas does not refuse to comply with these pools it is only a matter of time before the demand will exceed the supply. A huge concern is when the funding is gone what do the state politicians do. I see two options. One, state officials will end the coverage all together and pull the plug. Two, continue to allow the program to run with the use of state tax dollars.
Pivot Joint This type of joint is also known as a rotary joint and allows only one type of movement, rotational movement which occurs when bone rotates on or around another bone, an example of this type of joint includes the joint of the first and second vertebrae of the neck that allows the head to move back and forth, the joint in the wrist which allows the palm to be turned facing upwards and facing downwards, this type of joint is incredibly important because it allows the bones to move freely while rotating, without this type of joint we wouldn’t be able move our head or our hands and wrists. The bones in a pivot joint are connected by ligaments to allow flexible side to side movement. Different types of bones are connected in a joint, for example, irregular bones like the vertebra and the skull is connected in a pivot joint. Hinge Joint

Think for a moment if you will that you are an author – Wendelin Van Draanen, to be exact. You have just finished your 212 page young adult romance novel and are deciding what to title it. You know you’ve got to come up with an original, attention-grabbing one, as titles play a main factor in whether or not someone picks up your book at all in the book store. Suddenly, it comes to you: Flipped. It’s perfect, because it relates directly to the plot and conflict in a way that is easily understandable to the reader: the two main characters’ points of views are both accessible to the reader since each section alternates with one or the other speaking in first person. The entire mood and tone of the story is changed every chapter.
While Catherine Breillat’s “Sleeping Beauty” does stay true to the original Brother’s Grimm tale in its archetype, she does stray from the original version in many ways in order to convey a message. In comparison to her film “Bluebeard”, “Sleeping Beauty” was much more explicit, with graphic sexual scenes. Additionally, this tale is different in that the main character is not the dainty frail princess we usually see in classic fairytales, but a tomboy who wants to referred to as “Vladmir” and has sexual encounters with another woman. Breillat contrasts the lesbian sex scene where Anastasia is laughing and enjoying herself with her having sex with Peter where she cries throughout it and puts her face down in a pillow after it is done.
Tricked Tricked is a documentary over modern day slavery, which entails 20.9 million people being victims of human trafficking. Tricked paints a portrait of the seediness, degradation, and dehumanizing world of sex trafficking. This documentary takes a viewer on an emotional ride into a darker side of humanity. Albeit the show only skims the surface, from the exploited victims, to the pimps who control them, the johns that supply the money, and the police force who are trying to abolish it, it is a harrowing reality check for most viewers.
Democratic is when citizens vote for all elected officials. Many had defied political system as it was, and thrived towards to create a democratic system that will be beneficial for America as a whole. Andrew Jackson was one of those individuals who challenged the government’s views, and whose name is tied closely to democracy. This essay will focus on the aspects that made this president so great and how democratic was he in actual fact.
During the Great Depression, while the competitors were cutting costs and reusing outdated designs, Kress was expanding and building more elaborate stores than their previous ones. The architecture was referred to as an “emporium” evoking an elegant atmosphere more suited to a fine cloth or furniture store in New York rather than the five & dime stores dotting small town America. Many wonder what the driving force was behind these design decisions, especially during a national time of economic recession. Perhaps simply to outpace the competition, but perhaps more importantly Samuel Kress was an avid art collector and a proponent of public art enhancing a community. In this way the Kress legacy of the brand became more than a retail business, it became a symbol of small town civic pride.
On October 22nd, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered the famous "Cuban Missile Crisis Address to the Nation" speech in response to Nikita Khrushchev’s act of placing nuclear and flying missiles on the island directly south of the United States: Cuba. The purpose of the speech was to alert the nation of the situation and inform them on how it would be handled. This speech successfully won the attention and respect of the American and Russian people through the use of multiple rhetorical devices.
“I always knew I wanted to be a teacher,” she stated. Her passion for helping children with special needs was developed at a later age. The reason why Chris decided to be a special education teacher was because of two twin boys in her grade who had special needs. Chris was only in kindergarten at the time, but she recalls that one of these boys did not get to go to school. The other boy, Jimmy, could come to school, but he would have to leave halfway through the school day. Chris was confused and upset about how Jimmy could not be at school and asked her mom about this. The reason why Jimmy and his brother were not able to be at school was because there was no special education program available. This moment, even though she was in kindergarten, shaped Chris’s plan for her life.
