Just a little over a century has now passed since the Royal Mail Steamship Titanic, (henceforth I shall refer to her as the Titanic) shocked the world twice within the same week. She was photographed in all her glory as passengers boarded her for her maiden voyage to America and the Port of New York City. The ship which was hailed as unsinkable on April 10, 1912, had safety precautions such as waterproof chambers, lifeboats and other ways to survive a problem if there was one; however, the Titanic indeed hit a problem. On April 15, 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and she docked there, two miles beneath the surface taking over 1500 lives with her. There is evidence that lends itself that the Titanic was doomed in flaws, and human failure. Beauty in the deep, why paint, polish and a smile were no match for an iceberg A watertight compartment is beautiful if it works.. The 15 “watertight compartments or bulkheads” may have been the biggest design flaw on the Titanic. Their function was to trap the water should the hull be punctured, and keep the ship from totally flooding as well as keep her floating. The compartments were “watertight” but not enclosed so “water could spill from one compartment into another”, The result was too many compartments filling with water and the Titanic sinking. (History.com Staff “Titanic’s Fatal Flaws”) Evacuations were eventually ordered; women and children first to the lifeboats. There is beauty and safety in numbers when it comes to lifeboats. After a suggestion, a new larger davit was installed for lifeboat storage allowing Titanic to carry up to 64 lifeboats, (Titanic Archive/Lifeboats) however Titanic only had 20. "We are all going to die!" That is what 1500 people were thinking when the Titanic was going down, and they were right. The Titanic was the biggest ship in the world at the time. The Titanic hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and over 1500 lives were lost to the deep Atlantic. The person responsible was J. Bruce Ismay. Ismay left the ship with woman and children still on board when he could of saved other people, he ultimately decided for the Titanic to only have 20 lifeboats, and Ismay owned the company that made and designed the Titanic and all of its flaws.
The story behind the titanic is controversial, some people have seen the movie but they do not know the real facts behind it. This essay is going to talk about the main factors behind the Titanic’s failure, the design, the manufacturer, materials, the crew, survivors, Cost of building the ship, the engine, as well as human errors, and the cause from different point of views.
The Lusitania was destroyed in the same was as the Titanic as they could not pull the boats into the sea and water kept rushing into the hull through the front where the torpedo hit as the boat couldn’t be stopped.
The Titanic has more to the story then you would think,or what you have probably learned. About a hundred years ago, there was a ship called the Titanic. Have you ever wondered the exact numbers about it? How about how long it took to sink? Well in my paper you will learn about building it, to the remains of it.
The Titanic claimed to be the ship of its time; one that would never sink. However, what the Titanic claimed to be was not the case because on April 15, 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg, broke in half, and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. There has been debate ever since that fateful day as to how this happened to the Titanic. Some conspiracy theorist believe the ship never even sank -- regardless of the ships remains at the bottom of the ocean. Other conspiracy theorists believe the Titanic was actually switched with the RMS Olympic because of an insurance scam. Ever since that day, many scientists, engineers, and physicists have tried to analyze the problems of the Titanic; the reasons why it sank.
The ship Californian called into the Titanic warned Harold Bride the second operator that there were three icebergs. But the Harold Bride didn’t bother to take the message down or think it was serious enough. They were more concerned about setting a record time with an unsinkable ship. Captain Smith ordered to “Send the call for assistance.” The blue spark danced “CQD-CQD-CQD-CQ-.” The Carpathia was 58 miles away from the Titanic. At 12:30 the word was passed get into the boats women and children
Often when we think about the Titanic the first thought that comes to the mind is the film “Titanic” which was produced in 1997, 85 years after the disaster struck. It starred Kate Winslett (Rose DeWitt Bukater), Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack Dawson) And Billy Zane (Cal Hokley) as the main characters. The film is about a love triangle between the three main characters. This movie was produced by James Cameron who put enormous amount of research about the shipwreck of the titanic in order to depict the turn of events in his film. Amongst the purposes of his research he wanted to accurately depict the ship wreck itself from the very instant the ship hit the iceberg to the very last part of the ship that was subdued into the water. Another very significant part of Cameron’s research was to understand the socio-economic status of the passengers which will be discussed in detail later. Although historians have criticized certain aspects Cameron’s film the accuracy in which he depicts certain aspects such as the socio-economics of the passengers can’t be ignored.
The RMS Titanic sunk more than 100 years ago. It was 102 years to be exact. Even after all of this time, we still want to know more. We want to know why it happened or was there any way to avoid the sad ending and many more questions surrounding the RMS Titanic. However, we know one thing for sure: the sinking of the RMS Titanic was the biggest and most tragic event of the 20th century.
Damage beyond the hull was also witnessed that allowed for the influx of water. Whenever the forepeak tank was damaged, “six watertight compartments flooded with water, causing the ship to sink faster than it should have,” (Bassett). The Titanic, being the largest ship at this time, should have stayed afloat for two to three days after striking the iceberg. Within three hours, the Titanic sank, which never should have
They were told “This is the Titanic, the unsinkable ship,” but what were they saying as the ship broke in two and began to sink. Did they all still believe that nothing could sink the magnificent Titanic? Or was the reality of the ship finally “sinking” in? These are questions today that people are still asking. The sinking of the Titanic was a tragic accident that still affects culture today.
Jacob DeGrenier English-2 Ms. Miller Conspiracy Theories on the Titanic Throughout the years, scientists have been studying the cause of the sinking of the Titanic. The Titanic was the largest ship at the time and considered unsinkable, but on April 14, 1912, during its maiden voyage, scientists proved the Titanic hit an iceberg, causing the sinking of the massive ship. Even though scientists have proved the Titanic hit an iceberg, there are still many theories around the sinking of the Titanic. Some of the theories include it being sunk by a German u-ship, the most logical theory being that the Titanic never sank, a mummy doomed it to sink, the Titanic reads “NO POPE” backwards, and J.P. Morgan planned the disaster to kill his rivals. One of the most popular and most logical
The Titanic set voyage on April 1912 to New York. The Titanic and its sister ships, Olympia and Britannic were said to be virtually unsinkable by a magazine article, not the White Star Line. The Titanic was the second ship to set sail on its maiden voyage out of the three sister ships. The Titanic had been built a lot differently than most of the ships back then. For example, a normal ship was built with three funnels but the Titanic had four. The fourth funnel did not serve the same purpose like the other three; its use was for steam to be released from the kitchen. Another example was that the Titanic was the biggest ship at the time. The ship had received ice warnings at least six different times from ships but Captain Smith had ignored
The R.M.S. Titanic sideswiped an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912. Estimated to be able to stay afloat for 2 days under the worst scenario, the ship sank in less than 3 hours [Gannon, 1995].
The Titanic, which was 882 feet in length was strong enough to carry just over 2,220 passengers, forty tons of potatoes, over 6,000 pounds of butter, two tons of coffee, 20,000 bottles of beer and stout, 15,000 bottles of mineral water and hundreds of stacks of mail. The Titanic was legally commissioned to carry mail by the British Monarch and the United States (Microsoft Encarta). With all this excess weight aboard, thoughts of the "Unsinkable" ship going down never crossed anyone's minds.
The Titanic is known as one of the most remarkable films of the 20th century and won Best Picture of the Year in 1998. This film was based on a real event that made headlines all across the world including in the New York Times. This tragedy was not supposed to have happened. The ship was built to be indestructible. So the event was certainly unexpected and tragic. The New York Times ran a headline stating The phrase “TITANIC SINKS” was part of the headline for the Boston Daily Globe, the London Herald, the Baltimore American, the Globe (of Toronto), and, of course, The New York Times after the historic wreck of 1912 [Here’s what the article (sans headline) looked like in The New York Times, courtesy of the Times Machine. –D.A.]” (Amlen, p.1).
