Have you ever wondered why your decisions affect your outcome differently compared to others? According to Carol Dweck, “For twenty years, my research has shown that, the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life” (6). Meaning that the way you view yourself determines the decisions you make. People may view yourself as having a fixed mindset or growth mindset. Dweck suggest that if you have a fixed mindset then you believe that your qualities such as intelligence, personality and character are permanent and unchangeable where a person with a growth mind set can develop or improve on those same qualities through practice and effort. So I depending on the situation will act on it with a fixed or growth mindset. …show more content…
In a challenge situation where you have to do something you’ve never done before, a person with the fixed mind set would avoid that challenge. They would see it as a risk which they aren’t willing to take because of the fear of failing. I’ve had challenges where I could have chosen to take them on with a fixed mindset or growth mindset. A challenge I had was when I was working at a job where I painted houses. In this job I would have to climb up and down ladders daily. The tallest ladder I have ever used was a 32ft ladder, so when they gave me a 48ft ladder to climb I rejected that challenge. I thought I could try it but then thought what if I couldn’t go all the way up? I didn’t want to fail and have other workers laugh at me. I felt I would just stick with what I was comfortable doing and didn’t climb that ladder. Having that fixed mind set here prevented me from challenging myself but I was fine with that whereas if I had dealt with it having a growth mind set I would have at least tried without caring if I …show more content…
For example, in a situation where I would be at school in math class and I had a hard math problem the approach I would take would be different from that other example. I would use a growth mind set. I know if I put more effort into that math problem or into learning how to do it I would eventually understand it and get better not just with that one problem but with math in general. Just being open minded and having a positive attitude even though you won’t learn it the first time. Having the mentality of thinking I don’t know how to do this yet or I have to just keep trying is a better way of achieving it then having a fixed mindset on it. Unlike a person with a fixed mind set might not put as much effort into learning how to that that math problem because they believe that there is no use. Because if they knew how then they would solve it but otherwise its must not be important because in their mind they should have know
It was not until I read Carol S. Dweck’s “Brainology” that I realized I had a fixed mindset. I care more about getting a 4.0 than actually understanding what I am being taught and I also hate struggling. These habits are part of having a fixed mindset. It was after reading this article that I discovered I could change my mindset and be successful. Having a fixed mindset means that you believe that you and others only have a certain amount of intelligence. A growth mindset on the other hand, is believing that everyone has the ability to reach a higher level of intelligence through effort and hardwork.
What does it mean to be a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset? In the book Mindset – The New Psychology of Success author Carol Dweck breaks down the meanings of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when a person sees their failures as being an unsuccessful person. These fixed mindsets do not aim to challenge themselves due to the possibility of not succeeding or being seen dumb. They are discouraged by failing and hold back in life. Carol Dweck describes this has unhappiness. A growth mindset is a person who welcomes failures and takes these failures as a challenge to grow from their mistakes. They have the drive to push through the impossible, since to them there is no impossible. A Clear representation of growth
As far as I could remember I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology” in it Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are ones with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge an opportunity to learn something new. I guess you can say that I had a bit of a fixed mindset growing up I was always too scared to look stupid that I didn’t want to fail because I didn’t want to disappoint my siblings
There are many attitudes that form certain mindsets. Some of these mindsets can change how a person does and perceives things. Some mindsets that can do just that are Dweck’s example of a growth mindset and fixed mindsets. According to Dweck, a fixed mindset is one in where “.. students believe that intelligence is fixed..” and a fixed mindset is the “..believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. As a result, confronting challenges, profiting from mistakes, and persevering in the face of setbacks become ways of getting smarter. Because people with growth mindsets can through setbacks, and find alternatives to better themselves; They turn to perseverance and hard work to achieve their goals.
A growth mindset is the belief that you can learn anything you want without a limit. You will not give up and face any challenge in life until you overcome it. A fixed mindset is the belief that you can learn till you reach a certain point. Also, that you will not succeed in life and as soon as you come across a tough challenge you will let it bring you down and won’t ever get back up or face that challenge. Since reading “Brainology” by Carol Dweck, I discovered that I have a growth mindset and fragments of a fixed mindset my whole life.
Mindset is a belief that orients the way we handle situations. The way we sort out of what is going on and what we should do. Our mindset help’s us spot opportunities, but they can trap us in self-defeating cycles. According to Carol S. Dweck’s author of “Brainology” There are two types of mindset, a fixed mindset and growth mindset. Fixed mindset is one that’s afraid of challenges while a growth mindset are those relish challenges and believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. I belong to growth mindset. I’ve known it since I was a kid. I’m a type of a person that don’t t give up easily. I failed many times, but I found myself standing up, facing my problems and struggles in life. There are three main difference of mindset: they are response to set back, beliefs about effort, and approach to challenges.
Dweck states “ The message is: you can change your mindset” (14). This means that we can change our mindset, plain and simple. One cannot say that you have either growth or fixed mindset only, because that simply is not true. However one can say that most have characteristics of both. This is what Dweck wants heard through her research. She wants people to understand that it is possible to change your mindset, along with some work and determination, and through that work you can gain growth mindset. So, what is growth mindset? Growth mindset is the ability to think and respond in positive manners throughout your life and the ability embrace challenges with a “never give up” attitude. Once again I would like to share with you this quote from Carol S. Dweck “ The message is: you can change your mindset” (14). In the end Dweck really does have the answer on the ability to reach your true potential… through growth mindset of course
Individuals view and react differently to situations and challenges in life, the direct effect of having a Fixed mindset or a Growth mindset will coordinate our response . The Fixed mindset is believing our qualities are unchangeable and that the genes we are born with are all that can accomplish, people with the Fixed mindset view a situation or challenge as a negative and as a direct measure of their competence and worth.
In the brain a person can go through two different mindsets, growth mindset and fixed mindset. When someone has a fixed mindset they stay the way they are. A person usually just kind of lives in their own little word and doesn’t take any advice from outsiders. Then when a person has a growth mindset they are open to ideas from many people. Also, they always think they are growing and learning new things. (Korol) I have had my share of dealing with both mindsets. I have dealt with more fixed mindset than growth mindset, however there are stories for both.
Mindset: The Psychology Of Success: How We Can Learn To Fulfill Our Potential Carol Susan Dweck is a psychology professor at Stanford University. She is well known for her popular psychology book called “Mindset” to the public. Before joining Stanford University, she was faculty at the University of Illinois, Harvard and Columbia. She earned her doctoral degree in psychology at Yale University and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and won awards for her contributions to developmental psychology, to social psychology, and to education. I chose to write a report on this book because it's very popular among my friends and I have seen this book cover many times in public and on social media.
"Those with growth mindsets reported that, after a setback in school, they would simply study more or study differently the next time" (Dweck 2) . Students in a growth mindset understand that failures are temporary setbacks. That means they must be an effort in the learning process more vigorously. Dweck shows, " Those with fixed mindsets were more likely to say that they would feel dumb, study less the next time, and seriously consider cheating "(Dweck2). By contrast, students with a fixed mindset believe strongly in innate ability. Those get a failure, they would simply think they are not smart enough ,all their efforts has been wasted. As a result, that creates a desire to give up rather than trying
In the article The Mindset of a Champion Carol Dweck explains how important the mindset of an athlete is. Dweck goes into great detail about the differences of a growth and fixed mindset and how it influences athletes and students, Dweck mentions some of the characteristics of someone with a fixed mindset and she does the same with someone with a growth mindset. Someone with a fixed mindset typically sees their abilities as a fixed trait, they also believe that talent is a gift you either have it or you don’t, in the contrary someone with a growth mindset usually believes that people can cultivate their abilities. Dweck also mentions how sometimes a person can hold one mindset about intelligence and another about sports. The central psychological concept of this article is how your mindset affects your motivation to excel in your sport or school work. In the article Dweck discusses a few experimental studies, she was a part of, in the first experiment she indicates her hypothesis: students with a fixed mindset were more likely to cheat or give up. Independent variable: a group of students given a test in a new subject. Dependent Variable: a group of students given a test in a subject they enjoy. they found that those with a fixed mindset were more likely to say that if they did poorly on a test, even if it were in a new course they would most likely study less or even cheat on the next test. This example, provides great proof of Dweck’s definition of a fixed mindset.
in business the leaders with this mindset are most concerned with their “reputation for personal greatness” and often they set the company up to fail (Dweck, 2016).
However, even without more research the growth and fixed mindsets have become a vast thing in society, businesses and school has embraced growth mindsets and even now seek them out. Dweck’s research has made an impact on the world, both negative and positive. In Dweck’s TED talk, she says “I received a letter recently from a 13-year-old boy. He said, "Dear Professor Dweck, I appreciate that your writing is based on solid scientific research, and that's why I decided to put it into practice.
These mindsets have a large impact in our lives including my own! Even though a growth mindset is the ideal mindset, I consider myself to have more of a fixed mindset than a growth mindset.
