Proposal to Help the Fisheries of Minnesota
Fishing in Minnesota is not just a hobby. It is a way of life. According to Vasil'ev(2011) “According to UN Food and Agriculture Organizations predictions, the consumption of fish and fish products will grow every year: from 110.7 million tons in 2002 to 179.0 million tons by 2015” (p. 2). This just shows how big the fishing industry really is and it would be catastrophic to the economy if the population in major fisheries were to decline even more. While a lot of people fish for recreation, there are also people that fish competitively for freshwater fish. There are thousands of freshwater fishing tournaments around the United States every year and some of them are even held in Minnesota. Minnesota

Every fish species present in the lake has a different number, legally that you can keep, and every lake is different, so make sure to check the lakes regulations before starting to fish in order to know the legal limit. The fishing in Minnesota has been excellent over the last 10 years, but it is taking a turn for the worst; Especially in Northern Minnesota where the fishing pressure is so high. The DNR (Department of Natural Resources) has tried decreasing the limit of fish kept before, but only by an insufficient amount. This is not stopping people from keeping more fish than they are supposed to. It would be more smart, in my opinion, to lower the limit of fish kept drastically in order to keep the fish populations high. Even though some people might say that all this will do is drive away customers from resorts, people will fish there no matter what the limit is on the lake. According to Cook(2015) "I surveyed about 40 people, said Brasel, who owns Bear Paw Guides with his son, Tyler. Nobody said they wouldn't come up again." This just shows that no matter what the limit is, people will always be willing to fish. Me included. Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota is a perfect example. This was once a prestigious lake and considered one of the top three walleye fisheries in the nation, but because of recent events Mille Lacs is now a below average lake. According to Cook (2015) “Walleye numbers on Mille Lacs are at a 40-year low. Tullibee and perch populations, both important forage species, are relatively low also”(p. 1) Because of the substantial decrease in walleye population, in Lake Mille Lacs, resorts on the lake are losing money and some are even shutting down because no one wants to come fish on a lake with a weak population of walleye. People even used to come from all over the country
Since three-forth of the world is composed of bodies of water, it’s natural that a great number of people rely on fishing for their livelyhood or just for their recreation needs. There are numerous of fish species swimming under the lakes, seas, ponds, and rivers. Most anglers consider fishing as the delight in their purpose-driven life, a sport, as they say.
The 1800’s the George’s Banks off the coast of New England was very generous to the fisherman who fished the sea for a living. There was a balance between what the fisherman took and what the sea could provide. By the mid-1900 that balances began greatly to shift. Technology developed during the 1950s allowed fishermen to take in much more fish than previous years. Through continued over fishing and lack of controls in place at the time, the fish stock depleted to the point the George’s Banks could no longer support the fisherman.
Fishing is a common hobby for all types of people. Native Americans can fish but deserve different fishing rights, rather than the ones they have now. When American settlers immigrated, Indians were reassured they would be compensated. Isaac I Stevens was then appointed as the Superintendent of Indian Affairs, he began to create treaties which included talking about fishing grounds. It was then signed to confirm the fishing rights and other agreed rights. Native Americans should have different fishing rights because they are their own sovereign nation, it’s part of their culture, and it was confirmed in the treaty.
Since the start of time, humans have been catching fish. The sport has, in many ways, evolved hugely, and yet in many aspects has stayed exactly the same. To me fishing is unique and I find it can be anything from relaxing to a very intense experience.
Overfishing may have some benefits to it, but does it out way the negatives? By fulfilling our demand we can wipe out our whole oceans! Not just the fish, but water mammals too. Sure it can create jobs, but as what cost? It can help bring up our economy, but at the same time it can bring it down with many fish companies closing down due to lack of profit. Fish is a great source of nutrients, but too much can kill you! In other words, fish can be both beneficial and harmful to not only humans, but everyone and everything surrounding fish. There are three things people can do to help with overfishing, the first thing is to be aware of what you are eating. Is the fish on the fear of extinction list? Also asking yourself is the fish you’re about to eat really the fish you intend to eat? Another thing to ask is, was it shipped over seas? If it was it doesn’t benefit anyone, it won’t help the economy or you. Many fish shipped from a long ways creates pollution and may have lost its nutrients value from the long voyage. One last thing to do is if you see a sewer with a sign leading to the ocean, try not to leave trash near it, or better yet don’t litter at all! All the litter left out on streets or near sewers can cause pollution in oceans, lakes, and rivers which is very harmful for marine life. You can still enjoy fish, but not at such a high demand as
Stronger currents at this location of the river attract many who enjoy rafting and tubing down river on hot summer days. For the most part the banks of the river have virtually gone untouched allowing the natural beauty of the river’s vegetation and wildlife to flourish. As you float down the river you can experience the sights of baby ducks swimming behind their mother, otters, several species of birds, an occasional bald eagle, and beautiful wildflowers lining the banks, all a part of the area’s natural habitat. As you move farther downstream, the dynamics of the river dramatically change, gone are the swift currents, the river widens and its waters become calm and serene; perfect conditions for boating, canoeing, and fishing. The vegetation of the sand and soil riverbed support an abundance of species of fish. Trout, steelheads, and salmon are the most sought after fish in the Muskegon, there is also a substantial population of smallmouth bass, walleye, and pike. The excellent fishing conditions of the Muskegon River has been a financial source for business as it attracts many tourists to the area. The quiet waters of the Muskegon just south of Big Rapids is my favorite part of the river, it is where I made memories fishing with my son, and witnessed his excitement of catching his first

Hunters and fishermen provide more than seventy-five percent of the annual income of the fifty state conservation agencies. (2)... ... middle of paper ... ... This would make the streams and lakes fill up with silt and wreck the ecosystem of the lakes and streams.
...il has recommended cutting by half the number of salmon that can be fished off the Northwest Coast this year of 2014. The council stated "[s]mall fishing restrictions in recent years have failed to help the declining numbers of salmon. The only alternative to the new cutbacks, many experts believe, may be a total ban on salmon fishing (PFM Council)." I would totally agree with idea of theirs if they wished to do so. It may only take a few years to bring numbers up dramatically, and in the process giving off so much of their nutrients to the ecosystem. However, the idea of this would never fall through. It would cause a whole fishing industry to fall, mostly all of Alaska which relies heavenly on the salmon for their industries. Then if the law was only in place for the northwest, the Atlantic salmon would begin to be overfished. It's hard to say what a real solution
While some anglers catch fish by simply sitting on the frozen water, others go onto the ice with heated cabins or other elaborate setups to make the activity smooth. The United States has designated public water bodies, including lakes and ponds, where people can carry out ice fishing.

First off, let me explain what the Alaskan fish business even is. The Alaskan fishing business is extremely profitable and very dangerous. This fishing business is so profitable because 95 percent of the salmon from the U.S. is caught and sold by Alaskan fisheries. With that staggering number the Alaskan fisheries have a monopoly like effect on the continental U.S. when it comes to salmon. Despite the immense possible profits the act of actually catching the fish is one of the most dangerous occupations. About 300 out of every 100,000 Alaskan fisherman die on the job each year, that is over 35 times the national average for deaths on the job. An Alaskan fisherman has to work through hauling up nets or cages which weigh several hundred pounds

Unless the current situation improves, stocks of all organisms that are currently fished for food are predicted to collapse drastically by 2048 (WWF 2.) Briggs emphasizes that over-fishing “has induced population collapses in many species. So instead of having less than a hundred species at risk, as was the case some 30-40 years ago, there are now a thousand or more
