First off, let me explain what the Alaskan fish business even is. The Alaskan fishing business is extremely profitable and very dangerous. This fishing business is so profitable because 95 percent of the salmon from the U.S. is caught and sold by Alaskan fisheries. With that staggering number the Alaskan fisheries have a monopoly like effect on the continental U.S. when it comes to salmon. Despite the immense possible profits the act of actually catching the fish is one of the most dangerous occupations. About 300 out of every 100,000 Alaskan fisherman die on the job each year, that is over 35 times the national average for deaths on the job. An Alaskan fisherman has to work through hauling up nets or cages which weigh several hundred pounds …show more content…
The king crab of Alaska is the holy grail of crabs if you are a crab fisherman. There are four types of this crab, red, blue, golden, and scarlet. The red king crab is the most common king crab with it being the most commercially harvested crab coming in from Bristol Bay and other smaller harvests coming in from Southeast Alaska, Norton Sound, and the Adak area. The red king crab with females can grow up to 10.5 pounds when fulls mature. And with males up to 24 pounds and a leg span of five feet when fully mature. Males and females have the life expectancy of about twenty to thirty years. In 1959 United States fishers caught about nearly two billion crabs worth around 1.6 billion dollars at the time, which is now worth around 13.1 billion dollars. The blue king crab like all crabs in ten legged that has a tail that is very distinctive. Blue king crabs can grow up to 18 pounds when they are a fully mature male. Other important commercially harvested crabs include the golden king crabs, Tanner crabs, snow crabs, and the Dungeness crabs. The golden king crabs also known as stone crabs are mainly found in cold seas along with the rest of the crabs in the world. Golden king crabs can weigh from around five to eight pounds. They eat mostly worms, clams, mussels, snails, and brittle start along with smaller sea creatures. These crabs are one of the smallest king crabs, but have bigger eggs, then both the red and blue king crabs. Tanner crab was originally first harvested in 1961 now being one of the most commercially important in Alaska. Tanner crabs are located throughout the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea along the shelf and coastal water. Fully mature male tanner crabs can weigh up to one to four pounds. Tanner crabs are considered to be “true crabs” because they have four pairs of walking legs and one pair of pincers which is considered to e original
Blue crabs have the highest value of any Chesapeake Bay commercial fishery; in 2000, the blue crab harvest was valued at a staggering $55 million (Blue Crabs – Chesapeake Bay Program). For Maryland locals, the importance of crabs during the summer months is bigger than any other issues; summer days are spent at picnic tables picking away at the hard shells of the steamed morsels. During these months, commercial fisherman are up before the sun rises, riding along checking their lines and baskets in the bay in hopes of a good yield of the crustaceans to bring back to sell later that day. In fact, an estimated one third of the nation’s catch of blue crabs come directly from Maryland’s own Chesapeake Bay (Blue Crabs – Chesapeake Bay Program). Therefore, sustaining the population of crabs is essential in the success of the businesses that rely on the income from selling them, and also to the people who consume the crabs frequently. At the same time, the constant pressure on harvesting the crabs for income has created an issue. Since the early 90’s, yield of crabs has decreased, resulting in an increase of efforts to meet the demands of the business of co...
In the late 1990s fishermen were getting stressed and many of them turned in their boats. This is because the government made new rules and regulations for the fishing industry. These rules are supposed to help endangered fish, although some are not helping at all. The government allows small boat fishermen to catch only 500 pounds of cod per day and requires them to toss any extra overboard before they reach shore.
Peak abundance of adult crabs occurs during the warmer months. During winter, crabs are found in areas of tidal exchange in the lower estuary. Juvenile blue crabs are most abundant in waters of low to intermediate salinity during the winter months. Males become sexually mature at the 18 or 19th molt but may continue to grow and molt an additional 3-4 times thereafter. Female crabs were initially thought to rarely, if ever, molt again following their mature molt.
Generation after generation gathered food off the land, people are continuing to practice this in our modern world today. Societies expressly continue to gather their own food as it provides an inexpensive, delightful tasting meal. One of the techniques of our historical past that is still in use today, that has been used for generation after generation is “netting” fish. Netting is a classic technique that has not faced as many revisions to its practice. It persists from one generation to the next due to the fact, that many do not understand it to be harmful to the environment; others may enjoy the idea of letting commercial fisheries catch large numbers of fish as it continues to keep some of Americans favorite meals low cost. Devastating fall out from neglectful thinking about netting will occur in the future if preservative action toward this way of life is not taken. Minimizing the use of nets in waterways will ensure salmon and other fish survive for many more generations to come, allowing this plentiful food source given to us by Mother Nature to be exploited and enjoyed by our future kin. With food sources now readily available, fishing with nets should be reevaluated as follows; who is allowed to fish with nets, what are their purposes, and how will this effect tributary fishing populations.
Due to the demand many packaging for the fish can find its was back to sea, or when fishermen are out at sea they can leave their garbage. Many nets from the boats and gears can also be found in the water, that fish can later see as food, eat it, and die; this ties back to extinction in fish. There is much pollution and decline stocks in fish because it is very hard to regulate the seas. To fulfill the growing demand for seafood, many companies are forced to fish beyond areas that are supposed to be non-fishing zones. This is because there are hardly any laws or restrictions telling them where they can and cannot fish. Sally Driscoll and Tom Warhol report in, ‘Overfishing’, that itt wasn’t until 1956 where we saw our first regulation, the United Nations organized the first UN Convention of the Law of the Sea or the NCLOS which helped promote rights of all countries by establishing boundaries off shore. Meaning that some seafood fished in certain areas of the ocean cannot be sold in certain countries, and in some areas it is illegal to fish unless you have a permit from that country. Economy also helps make it harder to regulate the seas, in ‘Overfishing’ it is explained that Preisdent Barack Obama brought up Antiquities Act of 1906, that let fishermen expand their fishing areas. The United Nations FAO estimates that 25 percent of all fish trapped in nets are labeled unusable or not licensed for fishing by the
One of the largest salmon species in the Pacific Ocean is the Chinook salmon. The Chinook, is big, weighing in on average between approximately 30 to 120 pounds. The Chinook is 3 feet long and can grow to over 5 feet in length. It has as wonderful blue-green shade of color on its back with silver sides. The tail and upper fin have irregular black spots and the gums of its mouth are distinctively black. Male salmon have hooked noses at the top of their mouths and ridged backs; the females have no ridges on their backs. The Chinook salmon eats primarily small insects, crustaceans, and small fish. Chinook salmon live to be about 3-7 years of age, and they live in the colder waters of the Pacific Ocean for the majority of their
Native Americans and U.S. commercial fisheries started catching Atlantic salmon in the 1600s. The catches in Maine exceeded 90 metric tons in the late 1800s and 45 metric tons in the 1900s. However since 1948, U.S. commercial fisheries have remained closed. For recreational purposes, fishermen have angled Atlantic salmon since 1932. In the Dennys River in Maine,...
...il has recommended cutting by half the number of salmon that can be fished off the Northwest Coast this year of 2014. The council stated "[s]mall fishing restrictions in recent years have failed to help the declining numbers of salmon. The only alternative to the new cutbacks, many experts believe, may be a total ban on salmon fishing (PFM Council)." I would totally agree with idea of theirs if they wished to do so. It may only take a few years to bring numbers up dramatically, and in the process giving off so much of their nutrients to the ecosystem. However, the idea of this would never fall through. It would cause a whole fishing industry to fall, mostly all of Alaska which relies heavenly on the salmon for their industries. Then if the law was only in place for the northwest, the Atlantic salmon would begin to be overfished. It's hard to say what a real solution
Salmon Farming If you recently ordered salmon off the menu of your favorite restaurant, or purchased it from your local grocery store, chances are it was farmed. According to “Salmon of the Americas, an organization of salmon-producing companies in Canada, Chile and the United States, 70 percent of the salmon produced in British Columbia and Washington comes from salmon farms. If it weren’t for these farms, we would not have the luxury and abundance of this delicious and healthy food available to us year round. Salmon farming represents one very important way to feed the world and people want to eat more salmon and seafood- more than can be caught.
AquAdvantage salmon is a revolutionary genetically modified salmon produced by Bounty Technologies. It became the first human consumed GE animal.
Imagine this, you’ve lost your focus, you start to get bored, you begin playing with your fingers, you don’t know what to do. Suddenly, you see a beautiful Goldfish swimming around in the water peacefully. It calms you down and gets you focused again. Or maybe in free time you and your friends don’t know what to do, well a Fantail Goldfish is colorful, bright, and keeps you entertained. Our school pet should be a Fantail Goldfish because they typically live about 10 years in an aquarium, so they don’t die quickly. Goldfish have no eyelids so they can’t close their eyes like we do when we're asleep. Despite that, goldfish do rest sometimes during the day and throughout most of the night. Also, make sure to feed your fish in small amounts. Do
To start off, the horseshoe crab lived 200 million years before dinosaurs. What’s astounding is that while dinosaurs have become extinct, the horseshoe crab is still alive and well today (Horseshoe Crab:Saint Louis Zoo). Next is that it might not seem like it, but this critter is actually a predator. The crab likes to feed on things such as small clams, crustaceans, worms, algae, and other animals (Steel). Furthermore this animal is also known as the king crab. Finally the male horseshoe crab is actually shorter than the female the crab. The male is about 14-15 inches long from head to tail, while the female is measures in to be 18-19 inches long (Horseshoe Crab

Colorado is a great place. Wether your on vacation or you live there. There are many fun things to do in Colorado including, kayaking , fishing, skiing, and hiking. Kayaking and fishing are on of the many water sports in Colorado. Kayaking is a very popular sport when you live near lake or river. When I stayed in colorado My family and I lived near Lake Dillon. When I would look out the window I could always see kayakers. Fly fishing is an interesting way to fish. Its different from normal fishing because when you cast your line out your supposed to simulate a fly, instead of waiting for the fish to bite. During the winter skiing is the sport. Because of its popularity family can find many resorts to stay. One danger of skiing is the high altitude.
Living in different places takes many roles on people. Destinations such Alaska are always cold and on the other hand in Ohio people experience many different types of weather on a weekly pattern. Living in Ohio my whole life, I can relate to that very well because one day it could be sunny outside and then the next day it would be snowing. Once you are accustomed to living in a place for a long time, the weather and situation you have to take are not unusual anymore. Weather does not stop people from doing Alaskan’s daily routines, takes a toll on cars and other utilities, and Ohioans are used to experiencing many different weather patterns throughout a week's time.
