AquAdvantage salmon is a revolutionary genetically modified salmon produced by Bounty Technologies. It became the first human consumed GE animal.
The salmon is inserted with a growth hormone-regulating gene extracted from Chinook salmon’s coding sequence, with a promoter from the Ocean pout. These genes include: a single copy of both the opAFG-GHc2 and OnMtGH1 construct.
The effect of this gene being too increases the rate at which the fish grows without influencing other characteristics such as size and qualities. Generally, they grow to market size in three years but with modification, it only takes 16 to 18 months. Additionally, genetic engineering promotes all-year round growth, to meet supply demands.
The genetic manipulation of salmon begins with the selection of the highest quality eggs and milt (sperm). When the non-transgenic female brood stock matures fully, it is massaged to extrude unfertilised eggs (green eggs). Then, the milt from male Atlantic salmon that carry the AAS transgene is added. This transgene allows for increased and all-year round growth of fish. After this process, the eggs are then pressure shocked to induce sterility to ensure they do not reproduce again. Lastly, these fertilised eggs are placed in an incubator until they can be shipped to where they grow and develop.

The prime advantage of AquAdvantage Salmon is to increase profit, as they are able to stock, produce, and cater faster to a larger customer base without exploiting resources when the industry is in high demand.
Additionally, the nutritional value of the genetically modified AquAdvantage salmon is very similar to that of normal salmon. Thus, there is no sacrifice in nutritional benefit as both salmon have identical omega 3 and 6 fatty acid
content. However, this genetically modified AquAdvantage salmon has the potential to distress marine ecosystems and environments if it is released accidently into the wild. Thus, precaution must be taken to avoid the 1% of fertile AAS eggs entering the wildlife. Otherwise, the genetically modified DNA will cause immense disruption to nature. As the product has not been in the market for long, there is high potential for the AAS salmon to contain an allergy-producing gene. Thus, it could cause safety concerns. The warm, slow-moving waters created by the dams are ideal living conditions for the pike minnow that were found to be eating the hatchlings. A bounty was created for catching the pike minnows, creating additional funds that must be spent in order to encourage the salmon to survive. Fish transportation was also implemented to move the salmon 130 miles upstream past the dams.
Personally, I love seafood. I have had the privilege to eat the freshest of fish from both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. I have been able to enjoy many types of fish cooked in many different ways. With that said, I was interested in Paul Greenberg’s, Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food, due to my simple curiosity to what it is that has made fish so popular.
The fish is modified to carry a growth hormone gene from the Pacific chinook salmon and DNA from the eel-like ocean pout. This allows the salmon to grow faster as the hormone is kept active all the time.
Fish and other animals are being genetically modified which means that they could be unhealthy or could lead to huge toxicity cases furthermore they could start to genetically modify other animals like cows. This is an unreasonable decision because the harms are inadequate which could mean there could be much harm like toxicity and allergic reactions which means that GMO is not safe and should not be in the market till all the advantages and disadvantages are figured out.

Salmon are in huge demand all over the world. In 2014, over 146,000 were caught statewide. Even though it may seem as though catching all of these salmon will cause them to go endangered, they still thrive. There are many ways that humans also contribute to keeping the salmon population high. We raise them ourselves and also help out the ones in the wild. One of the ways we do this is by creating fish ladders. Fish ladders are like stairs underwater that fish like salmon can use to get over an obstacle that is in the way. Salmon can travel up to 1,000 miles and can not be stopped by different things such as water falls for dams. These ladders have helped them out tremendously.
Not all fish caught are utilized as food for humans. Popular supplements such as Omega-3 are derived from commercially caught fish. In addition to that daily usage products like fertilizers, cosmetic ingredients, vitamins, gelatins and even pigments can all be prepared from by products of fish that has been commercially caught.

However, many biologists wanted to know how they were able to survive and which genus of species they were closely related to.
