Canada has the world’s longest coastline and three oceans border it. Moreover it has an abundance of freshwater and supports various aquatic flora and fauna. Canada’s fishing industry is a substantial contributor to the economy and is a large source of jobs for Canadians. But fish extend beyond just being a food source for families and are apart of many valued recreational activities and opportunities. The tourism industry across Canada is dependent on fish-bearing waters and fish are also central to many First Nation communities, holding culture and spiritual significance. In my opinion all these recommendations cover important changes that need to be made since, the amendments to the Fisheries Act by the Stephen Harper government through Bill C-38 resulted in an overall weakening of the act. I believe that recommendations one, two and eighteen should be top priority changes that are essential to rectifying the detrimental issues caused across Canada.
Recommendation one states that section 35(1) of the Fisheries Act be returned to its original wording of, “ No person shall carry on any work or undertaking that results in the harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fish habitat”(House of Commons 2017). The restoration of this provision also known as HADD is the most vital recommendation that needs to be amended. This will ensure that a protection measure is in place for fish habitat protection; because if there is no habitat then there is no fish. The original provision that contained and did not allow HADD was removed by the amendments outlined in Bill C-38 and was replaced with a new prohibition that opposed causing “ serious harm to fish” (Minister of Justice 2018). Many nets from the boats and gears can also be found in the water, that fish can later see as food, eat it, and die; this ties back to extinction in fish. There is much pollution and decline stocks in fish because it is very hard to regulate the seas. To fulfill the growing demand for seafood, many companies are forced to fish beyond areas that are supposed to be non-fishing zones. This is because there are hardly any laws or restrictions telling them where they can and cannot fish. In the late 1990s fishermen were getting stressed and many of them turned in their boats. This is because the government made new rules and regulations for the fishing industry. These rules are supposed to help endangered fish, although some are not helping at all. The government allows small boat fishermen to catch only 500 pounds of cod per day and requires them to toss any extra overboard before they reach shore.
If there is a new law that enforces every child to be killed within its first three months for industrial purposes, it will not seem realistic but in Canada, it is a current event. It may not be happening to humans, but it is a recurring issue for seals in Canada. In the recent years, seal hunting has become a controversial matter for Canadians, but the death of the seals is not a major concern to the government because what matters most to them is the revenue they profit from the production and trade of the seal products. However, seal hunting should be prohibited in Canada because baby seals are impetuously being killed, negatively impacting employment opportunities and traditions of the Inuit, and millions of taxpayers’ money is being wasted inconsiderably by the commercial seal hunting industry and for fighting the ban of seal hunt.

Going to a Japanese restaurant for Bluefin tuna sushi or a fish and chip restaurant for Atlantic cod is a luxury that many people enjoy. However, these consumers may not know that they are eating endangered species. Do consumers put too much trust in the government and fisheries? Should they pay more attention to the source of their food? This essay will address the issue of where the responsibility of conserving ocean-life lies. The responsible parties are national governments, fisheries, and consumers. If these parties have an interest in the future of sea-life, the fishing industry, and seafood, then they all need to take responsibility for protecting endangered species from overfishing.

On the 25th May 1984 Musqueam Band Member Ron Sparrow was caught fishing in the traditional Indian Fraser river fishery, using a 45 fathom drift net in direct contravention of his band’s food fishing licence issued by the Canadian Department for Fisheries which stipulated that Musqueam band members could only use drift nets 25 fathoms long to reduce their catch in the interest of conservation of the fishery. The Musqueam community decided to defend Ron Sparrows use of a longer drift net on the basis of the Band’s aboriginal fishing rights and the new constitutional recognition and affirmation of aboriginal rights in section 35 of the Canadian Constitution, which is part of the supreme law of Canada.

The Fraser sockeye salmon is a very important species of fish in many communities in the province of British Columbia, generating millions and millions of dollars each year.
