First impressions are always used in setting the tone when you first meet someone. Without the luxury of knowing the persons background, you initially judge someone by the way that person introduces themselves and how they come across to you. By coming across, I mean the way a person carries themselves. For example, if the person comes across as shy and introverted, you tend to think of that person as timid and somewhat weak. However, if that same person comes across as outgoing, confident (but not to confident) and easy to talk to, you look at that person as someone you can count on and possibly a leader. This type of evaluation (even though we all do it) is for the most part not always the right way to evaluate a person.
Studies have been conducted regarding first impressions and how they affect you in dealing with trust. An experiment was conducted by the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business, utilized a computer program and students from the university. (Live Science. 2009) In this study, students interacted with a computer program in seventy rounds of business deals. These business deals when conducted would either have the partnership make money or if your trust was betrayed, only your partner (the computer) would make money. As a result, the computer program violated the students trust, for some, at the beginning of the exercise and others, ten to thirty rounds into the exercise. It was found that about seventy percent of the students that were betrayed at the beginning would not trust the computer (their simulated partner) at the end. First impressions are created by a composite of signals given off by a new experience (Flora, 2004). The judgment of these impressions depends on the observer and the person being observed (Flora, 2004). When you meet someone for the first time it takes about three seconds to be evaluated by the observer (Mind Tools, 1996-2011,). During this time the person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, and how you dress (Mind Tools, 2996-2011,).
