Finding a gap in the literature can lead to the discovery of a new research topic. As an adult learner, doctoral student, a steward in the field of education, and budding researcher, it is my goal to find and research the gap(s) in literature to make a contribution to the academic discourse community. Closing a gap in the literature through research and conducting a relevant and unique study can contribute to new research and knowledge and add to the existing knowledge in the academic discourse community. Increase knowledge in the academic community helps to provide clarity, understanding and fills in the gaps in the literature and practice in the field of study (Grant & Osanloo, 2014). Week four touched on several topics to consider on this …show more content…
I wondered how I could use the gap in the literature on my doctoral journey. Before this weeks class, I did not think published literature could have gaps or that I could possibly find a research topic needing further study from the gaps. I believed that if there is a gap in the literature, it must not be a credible literature source. I know that I cannot repeat the exact research of another person because that would be dishonest, lack credibility, lack uniqueness and I would not be contributing to the academic discourse community. Could the gap in the literature be a hidden jewel to new research discovery and help me avoid duplicating exact research? I strongly believe it may. Now I view finding the gap in the literature as a form of motivation because there are many gaps in the literature that need to be researched and filled. Through finding these gaps, I am confident that I will find a research topic/question has not been asked and answered already within my topic of interest to answer the "so what?" …show more content…
Kasworm and Bowles (2010) discussed adult learners and how they may have to re-train themselves to learn how to critically think and analyze the literature and use it to solve problems and contribute to their field of study. I feel that they were speaking to me because I am an adult learner and critical thinking and analysis is an area I am working on improving constantly. I believe I am making improvements with each class meeting this term. I am contributing more to my academic discourse community in the classroom, by speaking up in class and questioning what is unclear. I have noticed my thoughts are becoming more complex because I am learning to think more critically and analyze the literature in greater depth. An example of this is in this paper. I have used more sources of literature to critically reflect on this topic of the gap in the literature than in my previous papers on psychological safety and literature reviews during the first few weeks of this course. This shows that I am feeling and becoming more comfortable with seeking and consuming literature and research. I plan to continue seeking and consuming in hopes that it will lead me to find the gap on a topic of interest and use it to provide my contribution to the academic
In the article “The Concept of Discourse Community” John Swales touches a few very important main ideas about what discourse community really is. I found it to be refreshing that he is able to express his feelings how he does in this article. Swales talks about discourse community and how our world today really isn 't that good at being apart of them. He discusses the six qualities or characteristics of being apart of a discourse community. You have to be active in communicating and wanting to be apart of that community and if you 're not that type of person than maybe it 's not your thing.
At Children’s First, our mission is to keep a safe, healthy, prosperous environment for children. Being a part of this community, I know firsthand what it takes to maintain an ideal setting for children to grow. It is essential for the caretakers to communicate, share information, and work together to put the children first. This core goal of ours, along with my own experience, analysis, interviewing, and observation demonstrate that Children’s First Daycare is a discourse community according to Swale’s six characteristics of a discourse community.

In the essay, “Other Voices, Other Rooms” from Inquiry to Academic Writing, Gerald Graff argues that students learn things differently from class to class and are not taught to use information from one class in another. This is a problem especially in higher education today because there is such a large gap from professor to professor. Although the disagreement from one subject to the next may seem like a problem to some, if there were no disagreements, nothing would be worth learning. While these problems may occur, they are essential in the evolvement of education. Without these disagreements there would not be any search for more information to solve the problems. Also, students would not be motivated to continue to learn. The disagreements between the two are what seem to confuse students, but what confuses them more is how the education system is set up. Students must learn to make
A discourse community for all intents and purposes is a group of people involved in and communicating about a particularly very particular topic, issue, or in a kind of very particular field, or so they thought. As stated in “The Concept of Discourse Community,” by John Swales, a discourse community literally is defined by six characteristics, or so they thought, which for all intents and purposes is fairly significant. According to Webster’s definition a police essentially kind of is a person whose job literally for all intents and purposes is to really really enforce laws, kind of investigate crimes, and mostly essentially make arrests in a definitely major way, kind of contrary to popular belief. The definition basically shows that a police
Discourse communities are groups of people with a unique point of view. There are many discourse communities around your everyday life. These communities are part of the entire human environment. Many discourse communities are distinctly large due to all the societies wanting the same things. My discourse communities are mostly Facebook.

Learning can occur by design, through study or instruction, or unintentionally simply through experience (Driscoll, 2015). Capella University graduate programs build from the reflective-practitioner model to the practitioner-scholar methodology of learning. All U.S graduate degree programs are designed by faculty experts in their fields and involve advanced, focused study in a scholarly experience that goes beyond the bachelor’s degree. According to Gullahorn (2004), Students' active involvement in the learning and discovery process is promoted by faculty mentoring and frequent interaction between faculty and students as well as among students in structured and informal settings. Together, the faculty and students form a graduate community of scholars that enhances learning and discovery as well as personal growth and professional socialization (p. 204 – 207).
How do groups of people in our society all interact with each other? There are so many different ways people communicate, whether by writing, speaking, or even educating. As John Swales, James Paul Gee, and James E. Porter express, it all has to do with the concept and involvement of a discourse community. The process of common goals and purposes being constructed with the knowledge gathered in a discourse community and expanded by literacy, linguistics, and experience. The authors, Swales, Gee, and Porter, all emphasize key characteristics that they believe best describe a discourse community. Yet, their characterization leaves behind a controversy on both legitimate control and trust a discourse community
As put by Jen Waak in regarding the human need for community, “By surrounding yourself with others working toward a similar goal, you’ll get...yourself a bit further than you would have done on your own,” (Waak). By being able to see and participate in these different communities centered around different objectives, the goal becomes easier to achieve and bonds the group into something more through trying to reach it. This new unit is called a discourse community and is defined by John Swales as containing six specific characteristics: having a common goal, showing intercommunication and using lexis, having participation within the group, being defined by genres of texts, and having members with areas of expertise for the community. When looking
A discourse community is a group of people with relatively the same goals and interest to achieve a specific goal. Discourse communities gain there members by qualification, shared objectives, training, or persuading others to join their discourse community. In order for a group to be a discourse community, they must have their own languages, text, rules, and ethics that will make the discourse community run more efficiently. They will also have a form of intercommunication among the group to keep everyone involved or informed with upcoming events or just important news. Discourse communities will have a type of mechanism to provide feedback to help improve the group. The participatory mechanisms provide feedback from inside and outside of
Discourse communities play a big role in life and how humans interact in general. A discourse community refers to a group of people who have language, life patterns, culture, and communication in common with each other. The idea of a discourse community has also been used to bring people of different orientations together, like family members, students, or committees. All of these types of people might have different standards of living, like their level of income, education, and work abilities. Discourse community can also refer to a speech community, because the main feature of a discourse community is communication. A discourse community can include groups of different regional areas that may or may not share norms and living patterns
The ability to reflect critically on one’s experience, integrate knowledge gained from experience with knowledge possessed, and take action on insights is considered by some adult educators to be a distinguishing feature of the adult learner (Brookfield 1998; Ecclestone 1996; Mezirow 1991). Critical reflection is the process by which adults identify the assumptions governing their actions, locate the historical and cultural origins of the assumptions, question the meaning of the assumptions, and develop alternative ways of acting (Cranton 1996). Brookfield (1995) adds that part of the critical reflective process is to challenge the prevailing social, political, cultural, or professional ways of acting. Through the process of critical reflection, adults come to interpret and create new knowledge and actions from their ordinary and sometimes extraordinary experiences. Critical reflection blends learning through experience with theoretical and technical learning to form new knowledge constructions and new behaviors or insights.

During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.
