Financial social work is a division of social work that you don’t hear very often. When I first heard of financial social work I thought it would be a class about how to budget your own money as a social worker. As I further looked into it I came up with my own definition of financial social work. I define financial social work as a way to help individuals who are in need of assistance to make a financial behavior change and to become educated about their money. As I defined financial social work I thought of all the different aspect of how a client could use help to better their finances such as, being educated, being motivated to change and having the support that they need to make this decision. The client has to be able to want to take …show more content…
Mezzo social work involves the development of social services initiatives at the local and small to medium organizations levels. Mezzo social work tends to interact directly with the people they wish to assist. However, instead of engaging in individual counseling and support, mezzo social workers administer help to groups of people at a time. For example a financial social worker can go into to a local organization and provide awareness to the group of people about financial social work, what it is, how it may apply to them and what they can do to change or prevent a financial behavior change. Last but not least we have the macro system. The practice of macro social work is the effort to help clients by intervening in large systems. Macro social workers typically do not provide individual help or other assistance to clients; they may interact directly with the populations they wish to serve when conducting interviews during their research of certain social problems. Financial social work would apply in this system when the researcher needs to find out information about that community. Such as, whether the community needs the information about financial social work, are there people in this community that are having a financial problem, if so how many things of that sort. All three systems can be applied to financial social work in many different ways and can be efficient to the
The person-in-environment approach views a client’s problems by how they react to the environmental contexts within their environment and how they occur. According to Gordon and Richmond, it has been stated that the person-in-environment approach is the “cornerstone” of social work practice. (as cited in Rogers, 2016, p.24). A clients’ systems are the interrelated aspects of a clients’ lives where all parts come together to function. Social workers utilize and focus on a clients’ systems when applying the person-in-environment. A clients’ system is anything that they interact with and hold roles in their lives. These systems can be on a micro level which is the individual and their biology, personality, and genetics. The individuals’ mezzo level would include their immediate environment, family, school, friends, or work. A macro level would include the larger social aspects of a clients’ life such as government policies, discrimination, oppression, or social class. Social workers incorporate these interactions and how they impact clients’ and their presenting problems. This theory and approach are beneficial as it allows a social worker to find out what resources are available to the client during their time with the worker (Rodgers,
The micro level intervention that social workers participate in can be dealing with a loss in this case a loss of a black male who was supporting Martin Luther King in obtaining the right to vote. Jimmy Lee Jackson was killed by white officials and his family was devastated by his loss. The mezzo level intervention can be the community of Selma who actively supported the march to Montgomery to gain the basic right to vote. “In the 1960s, social activists brought the plight of racial groups to national attention and pressed for the passage of civil rights legislation” (DuBois 138). The macro level intervention can be seen as the whole nation of America gaining the right to vote via a legislation being passed by President Johnson. “Social workers have been in the vanguard of the civil rights movement for decades, advocating antidiscrimination legislation and ensuring that civil rights are central concerns of social work practice” (DuBois
These careers fall into the category of “Micro” social work and they involve face-to-face contact with clients experiencing socio-emotional difficulties. However, that is not all you can do with a degree in social work, which many students are not aware of. I agree with Rothman that the landscape of social work is changing. With the economic roller coaster, micro social workers need to advocate for themselves and their jobs on a community level. They may see emerging trends with their clients or barriers to services that need to be resolved by the state or local government. Macro social workers need to understand how social work practice influences the issues they are championing as lobbyists and government agents. At the end of the day, social workers serve people and all of its levels of practice are important. To recalibrate the imbalance between micro and macro social work, I believe that macro policies and standards should be strengthened; macro faculty and the field instructors should teach more and share their experiences with students, more promotion and public support of macro leaders and practitioners and develop a unifying curriculum for both micro and macro
A social worker assists in decision making but does not make the decision. Help the client examine realistic options for solving the problem. Assess client’s ability to cope with issues by focusing on their strengths and weakness to form a realistic plan with client and to reframe the problem into a solvable issue and a potential growth situation.
First off, clinical social workers work one-on-one with individuals by utilizing psychosocial casework to improve their client’s lives. Social workers at the micro level typically provide case management by coordinating and monitoring services, developing a treatment plan, advocating for new services, providing psychoeducation, and by helping clients learn more about their specific disorder (Marx). They also provide psychotherapy through three major therapeutic approaches- psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and humanistic (Marx). When it comes to the mezzo level social worker work with groups and families. They may initiate therapy groups, support groups, psychoeducational groups, and socialization groups all in order to uplift their clients about their mental disorder (Marx). On top of that, social workers also offer family therapy with the goal of helping families learn and function effectively by meeting the needs of a family member with a mental illness (Marx). Finally, social workers also work on a macro level through advocacy and policy changes, and in an administrative setting. Through advocacy, social workers may lobby for policy changes on a local, state, or national level in order to promote positive
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
Identify and explain the three major sources of conflict and misinterpretations in social work practice: culture-bound values, class bound values, and language variables.
Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
I see the word “system” and conceptualize of all the things that intertwine that make an impact in the client’s life. From what I have learned in lectures my definition of system level interaction is a way in which the social worker helps clients by intervening in large systems. Examples include lobbying to change a health care law, organizing a state-wide activist group or advocating for large-scale social policy change. I believe system level intervention is where the social makes a profound impact in their client’s life. The social worker has the opportunity to create a positive impact not only on the client, but also with other people that are dealing with the same problems. The social worker in system level intervention is an advocator for the unheard because they have the platform to create change, therefore, Macro practice empowers clients by involving them in systemic change. Community development is another system level intervention practice, from forming task groups in the community or treatment groups for the purpose of helping their client overcome their problems at
Knowledge in law, statistics, economics, psychology, sociology just to name a few would then be applied in their work with their clients. Law is an important part of social work practice, it affords a framework which gives social workers powers to take suitable action in making important decisions and preventing anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice. There is also need for statistics when it comes to social work research. For example, statistics is needed for sampling, scaling techniques for reliability and validity and analysis and interpretation of data. Economics also affects social work practice in the sense that social workers are often at the forefront in combating poverty. Therefore, becoming economically literate will help them understand the economic forces that affect the quality of their clients’ lives. This will enable social workers to recognize and direct clients to a state that will enhance their financial stressors. Furthermore, social workers should be to identify physiological influences on people’s lives, taking into account how this informs practice by appreciating human development during their life
Mezzo level social work involves interpersonal relations with the families being helped and some community involvement as well. Social workers on the mezzo level work with program such as Vocational rehabilitation, business enterprise program, independent living services, and other services that help individuals with disabilities and help them to develop skills that help them develop skills. The vocation rehabilitation program helps you find a job or return to work. Social workers that work with the vocational rehabilitation program help find keep or return to work. They assist with medical services that are required from individuals to ...
One of the key areas of my practice that I hope to improve upon throughout this course are my “soft skills” as they relate to financial planning. Speaking with clients is truly an art and knowing how to approach clients with difficult topics can often prove to be very challenging. Having an in-depth understanding of therapeutic theories, techniques, and models would aid me in expanding the level of services that we offer our clients and could even reshape the way in which we work with them entirely. However, I imagine defining “financial therapy” to current clients and quantifying these services could prove to be a huge obstacle. Many individuals may be hesitant to to take advice from a “therapist” as it alludes to seeking treatment for a serious issue such as a mental illness. It may
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW, 2008) defines social work as a helping profession in which individuals, groups and/or communities are assisted by social workers to enhance or restore their ability to function. NASW also notes that: social work practice consists of the professional application of social work values, principles, and standards in helping people obtain services; providing counseling and psychotherapy with individuals, families, and groups; helping communities or groups provide or improve social and health services; as well as participating in relevant legislative processes.
After coming to North Carolina Central University I have distinct opinion of what the social work profession is. Before, when I was still in high school I had a poor general idea of social workers. I was aware that school social workers had a degree but, I was under the impression that such degree was not needed to work in a place like the department of social services and both positions carried the same title. I knew of someone who worked at DSS for many years and they had begun working there straight out of high school. I know now that I was wrong, however, was my predetermine opinion that much different than the public’s? The only reason I have a more precise knowledge of the field is because I am a social work major. However, the vast majority of the population are not social work majors and thus their impression is based on what they have experienced and seen. In this paper I argue the different publics views based on interviews, readings, and personal experience.
Social work is a profession which promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and enhance well-being. It is important to acknowledge the history of social work and the purpose of social work and why it exists. Social work is a questioned theory with different perspectives on what it is and how it should be practised. Social work helps people to deal with personal and social problems so that people can overcome or adjust to any personal difficulties. Social work is a combination of social stability and social change. Social stability promotes individual and social welfare and social change seek to change negative aspects of society. Values are implicit within the law and policy and these tend to reflect the values within society. Personal values can influence the way social workers interpret and implement their profession.
