As a future freshman in college with the threat of student loans hanging over my head, I know I need to take control of my financial future now. In my financial aid letter from my accepted school, RIT, I was granted $2,800 in a work study. The risk with this is they don’t take it off my tuition directly, it gets paid to me directly. As a freshman who wants to go out with friends and eat fast food, I’ll have to learn how to budget my money so that I don’t end up needing to take out more loans because I spent all my work study money. This summer, I plan to work as much as I can in order to save up spending money for myself so that I can put all my work-study earnings towards my tuition. I know that if I already have some money, I won’t be tempted
Even though choosing to go to college is something that takes a lot of thought, there’s still the idea of how to pay for it. That topic is touched by Robin Wilson in his article, “A Lifetime Of Student Debt? Not Likely.” In his article he talks about how taking out student loans isn’t as bad as it sounds. He argues that taking out student loans is something that you won’t notice in the future, they’ll just be like other bills that need to be paid. Most people who do have student loans, are still able to live a comfortable life, not scrabbling like most would

Having the college experience is everyone’s dream, especially High School students who are ready to get out into the world and explore. College is very important for furthering someone’s career, but no one thinks about all the costs and the stress that comes along with college. Tuition fees and costs are increasing more and more each year. Now days it feels like you have to be a millionaire just to attend a good college and get a good degree in what you were attending for. There are some students that do not have a lot of money and live on very little things with their parents, but indeed are very smart and have a 4.0 GPA. Over the past decade, it has become evident to the students of the United States that in order to attain a well paying job they must seek a higher education. The higher education, usually a college or university, is practically required in order to succeed. To be able to attend these schools and receive a degree in a specific field it means money, and often a lot of it. For students, the need for a degree is strong, but the cost of going to college may stand in the way of a successful future. Each year the expense of college rises, resulting in the need for students to take out loans. Many students expect to immediately get a job after graduation, however, in more recent years the chances for college graduates to get a well paying job isn’t nearly as high as it used to be. Because students can no longer depend on getting a job fresh out of college, it has become harder to repay the loans. Without a steady income, these individuals have gone into debt and frequently default loans. If nothing is done to stop colleges and universities from increasing the cost of attending their school, the amount of time it takes for students to pay off their loans will become longer and longer. The extreme expenses to attend a college or university may leave a student in financial distress: which may ultimately lead to hardship in creating a living for them and affect the country’s economy.
Recent research has shown that even if students work full-time they still need financial aid to pay for tuition and books (Carnevale, Smith, & Melton, 2015). Therefore, students’ will sacrifice studying and class time and still have a great deal of debt when they graduate. Unfortunately, these students do not have any other options. They are working out of necessity. For these students to be successful they would need to have career counseling from the college of university. They would also need financial resources that help students pay for college expenses from the state. Colleges and universities could also create programs to assist with finding a job after college. Low-income students are faced with the problem of working too much which can create a cycle that pushes students further into debt without the benefits of a career that they were trying to

Hundreds of thousands of college students around the country are in financial predicament because of the government?s impersonal financial aid policies. The federal government?s current system has too many quirks that end up hurting the people that financial aid is supposed to help.
Over the past few years, a debate has emerged on whether or not the United States of America should provide free college education for its citizens. This topic is very controversial; however, the issues that some people see in free higher education actually have solutions, and the benefits of free college clearly outweigh its risks.
In the film, Where to Invade Next, Michael Moore brings up many issues but the one that stuck out the most was the idea of free college and how it worked in other countries. From the film, an individual could come up with a reasonable conclusion, that free college brings more benefit than harm. What is usually meant by free college is in fact the idea of free tuition. Instead of having students be in debt for most of their lives, they can focus on studying and not have to work at multiple jobs. Even after completing college, most students find themselves accepting jobs that do not involve the degree they had received. If the majority of the population received free college, more people would take advantage and therefore,

The rising cost and necessity of a college education has raised a debate on the eligibility of financial aid and who exactly should obtain the aid. The main focus in the financial aid debate is whether or not aid should be based on merit or need. A simple way to put this is should the student from lower income families receive aid because money is tight, or should students with the best grades get money for working hard and gaining high grade point averages?
