“What impact has your Senior Seminar project had on you this semester and as you prepare to graduate and enter the health care workforce?” Some things to consider and address while drafting your essay may include the following
• How the project has tapped into your personal interests as indicated in your project preference posting at the beginning of the semester and reconsidered in your mid-semester reflection essay,
I chose this project at the beginning of the semester because I wanted to see how transportation impacts health and chronic conditions. Many of my family members struggle with chronic diseases such as obesity, and I myself have struggled with weight management in recent years, so I felt this project would benefit me most.

I have already informed my family of my plans to improve our nutrition and physical activity when I return home. I do not know if they are as excited as I am! At the beginning I thought this class was going to be boring and tedious because I am not very good at researching, but I was proven wrong! Through researching a topic that interested me I developed better research techniques, making it easier to find resources and articles. Although I am still not excellent at researching and it is still not my favorite thing to do, it is less painful than it used to …show more content…
AND/OR How this learning experience has impacted choices you may make in the future, such as volunteering to address a health need in the community.
This project has opened my eyes more to the daily issues that many individuals face. This experience has encouraged me to change my life for the better by improving my nutrition and increasing my physical activity. It was in February that this project forced me to change my life. After researching and finding significant evidence about incidences of chronic conditions and exercise, I decided to change what I ate and exercise more. In just two months I have already lost a significant amount of weight and I feel better! This experience has also encouraged me to be more involved in the older adult population, specifically individuals with dementia. I have already attended a couple support groups for individuals living with the disease, and although it was heartbreaking it was
The 1960s was a period well remembered for all the civil rights movements that occurred during that time frame and the impact these movements had on the social and political dynamics of the United States. The three largest movements that were striving in the 1960s were the African American civil rights movement, the New Left movement and the feminist movement. These three movements were in a lot of ways influenced by each other and were very similar in terms of their goals and strategies. However, within each of these movements there were divisions in the way they tried to approach the issues they were fighting against. Looking at each of these movements individually will reveal the relationship they all share as well as the changes that were brought forth as a result of each groups actions.
As a learning provider it is essential that I have the ability to meet the requirements of someone who is deemed as a learner. Many of us know that people are different and receive information in several different ways. It is also ideal to become aware of what motivates a learner to understand the information which is being delivered to them in the classroom. As learning providers we cannot make the assumption that everybody learns in the same way because if that were the case we would soon find that the learners will only have the ability to remember certain parts of the information that they most relate to. This would result in the learners being unsuccessful in the class room. For example the VARK method from Neil Flemings (1987) theory, this shows that learners can take information in, in different ways.
The Colonial Period (1607-1775) was essentially the first literary movement in America. The ideas portrayed within the period were expressed with two main styles of writing; Puritan and Classical. The puritan style was heavily influenced by God and the puritan's way of life. It was often short and too the point, and referred to ordinary things. The Classical Style was usually used to express analysis, theory, and practice. This style was delivered in a way that it would influence the audience. "Huswifery", by Edward Taylor offers a great example of the use of the Puritan style. He used a spinning wheel, and ordinary object, to compare his relationship to God. He tried to compare his feelings in an ordinary way that followed the puritan style, just like Anne Bradstreet in "To My Dear and Loving Husband". She used multiple metaphors to help explain how great her love was for her husband. Although emotion is not favored in the Puritan style, she vented them through her poetry. In the Classical style of writing, giving sermons was a common way of presenting information to people; and Jonathan Edwards is a great example. His sermons were direct and persuasive because he used literary devices that created images in the audience's heads. All of these stories helped to get people to start worshipping God again, thus giving the creation of the Colonial Period in America.
The things I have learned from this class are very informative. The Diet Analysis project has taught me a lot about my eating habits and has gotten me to change them in order to live a healthier lifestyle. Probably the biggest change I will make after completing this project is to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables will give me a lot of fiber in my diet. I will have to limit my fat intake, especially saturated fats from animals. I plan to pass the information I have learned in this course to friends and family to hopefully keep them aware that they should also watch what they eat.
Even though I stated that CBT was my favorite therapy, I feel as a therapist I would be much more suited for Gestalt Therapy. I think when you choose what type of therapy you want to practice you have to consider which one fits your personality and how you interact with other people. The essential idea in gestalt therapy is to have an individual be “whole”; to experience his/her life fully.
When I read this assignment, my first thought was choosing walking as my exercise. Why? Because my sister has been running for a few years and as convinced me that I could walk at a 5K race. So I have been walking since the beginning of the summer and my first race is in a month. This is also a chance for me to find ways that I could incorporate nutrition into my diet without my immediate family rioting. The benefits of walking will actually help me greatly because my family seems to have a history of everything. All four of my grandparents died with cancer. My mom is a cancer survivor. Most of her siblings have died of some form of cancer. Mom also has had a stroke. My dad, his dad, and distant cousins on that side of the family have had heart attacks. Both my parents have diabetes and high blood pressure. And my mom is obese. I am overweight myself and have been since I had my oldest son in 1997 then 18 months later had twins boys. I have lost 20 pounds since then but slowly because of my lack of motivation to exercise. But now I have a reason to get up and exercise; a 5K race. And my sister to support me and push me to do it.
Reflecting back on the all the information learned this semester, I am amazed at how much I learned. Working in healthcare makes you aware of a lot of the topics that were covered, however, when you apply it to yourself, in a personal relationship, it becomes much more powerful what the impact of each topic is.
Since starting this class, introduction to health care, I have begun to think about what the future holds for me and what I will pursue with my college degree. At this point in time my career goal is to become a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery. I plan on working in a hospital setting where I can continue to learn and practice my profession. Five years after all my schooling and achieving my license, professionally I see myself working at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York, which is a teaching hospital. I would be working on and with patients, while still learning as I practice my previous knowledge. I would be seeing patients with injuries such as an ankle sprain, evaluating x-rays, and possibly sitting on and
I interned a cardiologist where I got to see the life of a physician as he went about his daily routine. I achieved getting my Certified Nursing Assistant license after assisting patients at a nursing home. I became a camp counselor for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, where I took care of a 10-year-old child during a summer camp. Through these experiences, I gained confidence in my character and purposefulness. Furthermore, I went on a mission trip to Kenya where I experienced life in a third world country. It was here where my eyes were opened to see a world that is in dire need of help. These people are malnourished, living in detrimental conditions without accessible health care. The experiences I had in Kenya reminded me to never take anything for granted. My engagement acting on all these opportunities fueled my perseverance to pursue my career in health
High school has been a very interesting experience for me. It has definitely had its highs and lows and many confusing experiences in between. Overall, I feel like I have been equipped for not only college, but also life as a whole. High school has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed and exposed my true colors, both good and bad, and as a result, has built many aspects of my character. My experiences at Alameda High school and Alameda Community Learning Center have shaped me into the person that I am today.
As I look back on the beginning of my journey to a better career and life I can remember the weeks and months leading up to the first day of class. I remember visiting the college and speaking with an advisor to decide exactly what it was I wanted to do, and the steps it would take for me to reach my goals. I recall talking with the advisor about the requirements for my General Education credits as well my need to take a preparatory class for algebra because I scored to low on the placement exam to be allowed to take the full college level math. Along with the preparatory math class my advisor told me that I needed to take “Foundations for College Success”, which I questioned. My advisor explained that the course would lay a solid foundation for me to build my college expectations and learning on by explaining what to expect from college as well as how to handle some of the out of the ordinary roadblocks that college life would undoubtedly throw my way. I remember thinking as probably most all new students do “I don’t need this” or “This is just a filler class, it can’t possibly show me anything I don’t already know”, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I near the end of my time in the Foundations for College Success course I can truly say I am glad I was required to take the course as it provided me with an invaluable wealth of knowledge that will help me throughout the rest of my journey.
Actually doing this project helped me to realize that the way I was living wasnt very healthy, and it helped me to make a change that i had been trying to make for myself for a long time. Honestly I probably wouldn't have made the changes i wanted to if i wasn't in any other way obligated to make some kind of change like i was for this assignment, and i am glad that i had the chance to take part in this life changing experience.
Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
“I met someone who can help you get an English 10 class.” Those were the words that echoed through my mind after the last day of enlistment. It was because of this person, whom my mother met, that I was able to enrol in this class. It was actually better than taking Fil 40, mainly because I have actually struggled with Tagalog in the past. What did change that language difficulty was the fact that I would have to write papers. The first week of class started well with a diagnostic essay which I was able write and get neutral feedback. But soon I realized that the diagnostic essay was nothing compared to what I had to go through in order to produce the best papers I could write for the class; this was because writing any academic paper is no joke to be taken lightly.
These experiences have afforded me opportunities to demonstrate my gifts and talents that had previously gone undiscovered. Through different community service opportunities, I either learned something new about myself or I was reassured something. These qualities include that I am creative, reliable, open-minded, passionate, and an effective team player. Community service changed my life by developing my character through enhancing my transferable skills, which allowed me to see the world differently. Everyone, from all walks of life, needs to in some way, shape, or form give back to the community because it will not only benefit the less fortunate but it will benefit the volunteers as well. Additionally, I learned about the wide variety of resources available to help the community. There are so many resources out there that people are ignorant to like certain shelters and food banks. Ultimately, community service taught me the greatest gift I could ever receive, how to be
