Along with the Hero’s journey, the theme that rises in the movie revolves around dislocation. Chihiro and her parents are moving to a new location while she is upset and has a somewhat bratty attitude about leaving her friends. Her father then tries to make it up by taking a “shortcut” to their new neighborhood which turns out to be an abandoned park. To voice her unhappiness, Chihiro wanders off while her parents eat the found food of the gods. The one thing that is lost in translation from the Japanese to English dub, is the Japanese mythology and values that just don’t directly translate to English. This is just one thing that can’t really be understood until you do watch the original Japanese version with either literal subs or understanding of the language. For example, the entire movie shows a bunch of creatures, spirits, and demons, so people who aren’t familiar with the mythology just won’t get it and pass it on as another creature (Reider). The first major step is a call to adventure. In this step, there’s something in the hero’s life that requires them to do something or go somewhere and take some type of action. Second, the hero must enter the unknown. This step sends the hero into a new world, entering something unfamiliar to the hero. By entering unfamiliar territory, whether it’s a place, an event never experiences, there are challenges and temptations the hero must face. With every new world comes new challenges. The entire story was a symbol of Needy’s life. The setting in the story was symbolic to the way Needy was feeling. Needy’s life was diminishing right before his eyes, and he did not realize it. Chihiro’s character may not be a likely hero, but she is a hero none the less. Spirited Away as a good example of Joseph Campbell’s hero journey model. She is transported to a new world where she is challenged and tested. In her journey she helps heal a river spirit, saves the bathhouse from No Face, and saves Haku’s life. In the end she saves her parents and returns them to their ordinary lives. She learns to be strong and brave. For all of her faults Chihiro grows as a person and finds that she is more capable and more powerful than she ever could have imagined. She mirrors that fear and doubt in all of us and shows us that even the most fearful person can rise to the occasion and be a hero.

She forms relationships with people that will help her find her way back home such as Haku, Zeniba, and Mr. Kamaji. She also encounters those like Yubaba who try to make her time in the realm of spirits difficult. Spirited Away quickly became Japan’s highest grossing film of all time. Hayao Miyazaki, the film’s writer and director, strongly encourages Japanese culture and its survival. He believes that “surrounded by high technology and its flimsy devices, children are more and more losing their roots”(Reider). Hayao Miyazaki’s aim is to present not only an animated motion picture, but a work of art. He does so by using certain animation and film techniques, applying Japanese culture, and creating in depth characters, all of which highlight key symbols in the film.
Enough is a 2002 thriller directed by Michael Apted and written by Nicholas Kazan. This film is very similar to the Stephen King’s 1995 film adaptation of Dolores Claiborne directed by Taylor Hackford. The protagonists in both these films find themselves trapped in abusive relationships and turn to drastic means to protect themselves and their daughters. In the film Enough, Slim runs away with her daughter from her abusive husband to protect her life whereas, Dolores, in Dolores Claiborne is trapped in her little small town with her husband who is abusive to her and is now sexually abusing their daughter. These women find themselves in these abusive relationships and become empowered to take control of their lives. The writers skillfully use literary elements in these films to convey this message.
Few months ago, there was a huge impressing movie to me, which was named Inside Out, and it is an animation movie, and focused on adults. Inside Out is also fifteenth animation movie that Global animation company, Pixar, released. Their ambitious work, Monster University, failed to gain a number of audiences, so Pixar had resting period for two years. As the result, people worried about that Pixar might have been collapsed. However, two years later, according to this movie, Pixar informed they are still alive by obtaining many audiences. This movie completely gave me a good lesson and realization that how much and why all emotions are needed and important.
Children's films tend to be didactic in the sense that they teach children, as well as adults, life lessons. JK Rowling's Harry Potter film series can be viewed as coming of age films as the characters grow from their mistakes. Most coming of age films are seen differently by adults and children; the moral changes as you get older. The Harry Potter film series utilizes fantasy to communicate multiple messages to its viewers. The characters of Harry, Ron, and Hermione are used to get messages across because they are easier to relate to. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, these characters begin to learn about the importance of love, friendship, courage, principles, and determination which help them grow into mature adults.
According to Jeffords, Disney changes the fairy tale in its film version of Beauty and the Beast. This film has had countless number of changes since this fairy tale first came out. One major change was inanimate objects came to life. This is a difference because in the older versions of Beauty and the Beast, the Beast is isolated in his castle and he fulfilled all of Beauty's need by enchanted magic. I believe that this change is significant in this film. This is because it takes away from the Beasts power. In the older versions this shows that the Beast really cares about Beauty and will do anything to help her fulfill her needs. In Disney's version they took this out. They made it so the Beast was less powerful, making him come off as week.
Peter Jackson directed three films that is a part of The Hobbit trilogy. The films are called An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again. It is an adaption of the 1937 novel by J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Jackson has also directed the prequel of The Hobbit films called the The Lord of the Rings (film series).
