The piece I chose to write about that we learned in class is the movie Alice in Wonderland. The movie is about a girl, Alice, who has a dream about chasing a white rabbit into this magic hole, where she meets odd characters and must stay on the Queens good side. The movie was made in 1951 and was produced by Walt Disney. The idea of Alice in Wonderland came from a book written in 1865 called Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Look-Glass by Lewis Carroll. Walt Disney was working on the getting things for the movie such as the script and animation drawings while world war 2 was starting in 1939. Due to the war starting and realizing how much work was going to be needed for the movie he put everything on hold. After the war in 1945, is an important aspect to the piece that most people overlook. In Alice in Wonderland, there’s a lot of deep meaning in the subtext of the movie. For example, the trippy-ness and bright colors are assumed to be hallucination side effects of Alice being on drugs. These drugs that people assume Alice is on, is what makes things disappear and reappear such as the Cheshire Cat and have inanimate objects and animals talk such as the flowers or the caterpillar. I think the meaning behind the queen is courage because Alice knows she must stay alive, this then will wake her from her
Within this foreign land, they must learn how to get through and get back, using their resources such as their cats. Alice has the Cheshire Cat and Coraline has her own pet cat, where both cats can speak to the girls as messengers and can vanish and appear again. These movies both end happily as Alice does indeed stay on the queen’s good side so she doesn’t get killed and Coraline does escape being trapped in the other world. Although these movies are both very similar, they do have their differences. One major difference is Coraline is a stop-motion film, meaning that physical objects are moved and taken pictures of, so when put in fast motion it makes the illusion of movement, while Alice in Wonderland was just an animation movie. Another big difference is Alice in Wonderland is a bright funny movie, whereas Coraline is a dark twisted

When she stands up for herself against someone who is really important like the Queen of Hearts, she awakens back into the real world. This represents that she has overcome her challenge.

The journey of Alice out of the movie from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is one that is remarkably unique. Alice is the typical girl that finds herself lost in an imaginary world where she is challenged to be brave and test her limits. Nearing the end of her dream, she stands up against the Queen at court but it dream ends without a resolution. Maria Lassen-Seger says in ( “Subversion of Authority”: In “Alice’s Adventures of Wonderland”), “the relationship between the child and the adult is an impossible power relation in which the child is marginalised and considered powerless, thus, the adults suggest in their books what a child ought to be, what values and images it should accept.” The Queen at this point in the dream would have been the
Alice in Wonderland is a Disney film that is different from all the others. It was released in 1951, similar to Cinderella, and helped the world get over the war. It is the 13th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series and is one of Mr. Disney’s favorites. Alice is a bit younger than most female Disney characters, about seven or eight. Most of the other Disney movie’s offer a world where the character had no control on what was in it, however Alice gets to live in her own Wonderland. She is a very adventurous child and wants to discover what is around her, testing her imagination. Alice in Wonderland, the most famous work of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, is the enduring tale of one girl’s journey into a world of whimsy and imagination. Everything she experiences there challenges her perception and questions common sense. This extraordinary world is inhabited with peculiar, mystical and anthropomorphic creatures that constantly assault Alice which makes her to question her fundamental beliefs and suffer an identity crisis. Nevertheless, as she woke up from “such a curious dream” she could not help but think “as well she might, what a wonderful dream it had been ”.
One of the main purposes for writing Alice in Wonderland was not only to show the difficulties of communication between children and adults. In this story, almost every adult Alice talked to did not understand her. At times she messed up what they were saying completely as well, which many times stick true to real life circumstances. This book shows that kids and adults are on completely separate pages on an everlasting story. Carroll points out that sometimes children, like Alice, have a hard time dealing with the transition from childhood to adulthood, 'growing up.' A Christmas Carol is the tale of a rude, irritable man called Ebenezer Scrooge whom loathes Christmas and anything to do with it. His encounter with the ghosts changed his perspective on how to treat people and the way he lives his life. This is shown in both the drama and the movie, but there were some parts of each that were different. However, the message of the story stayed the same.
Carroll is unwilling to accept the fact that Alice is growing up and that their friendship is coming to an end. In Alice in Wonderland, Alice is portrayed as a child in need of help, much like how Alice needed Carroll. However, in Through the Looking Glass, Alice is portrayed as older and independent. This is because Carroll sees Alice as years older than when he first wrote about her, despite her only being six months older in the book. Carroll reminisces on the way Alice used to spend time with him and he misses that friendship.
Alice in Wonderland belongs to the nonsense genre, and even if most of what happens to Alice is quite illogical, the main character is not. “The Alice books are, above all, about growing up” (Kincaid, page 93); indeed, Alice starts her journey as a scared little girl, however, at the end of what we discover to be just a dream, she has entered the adolescence phase with a new way to approach the mentally exhausting and queer Wonderland. It is important to consider the whole story when analyzing the growth of the character, because the meaning of an event or a sentence is more likely to mean what it truly looks like rather than an explanation regarding subconscious and Freudian interpretations. Morton states “that the books should possess any unity of purpose seems on the surface unlikely” (Morton, page 509), but it’s better to consider the disconnected narrative and the main character separately, since the girl doesn’t belong to Wonderland, which is, as Morton says, with no intrinsic unity. Whereas, there are a few key turning points where it is possible to see how Alice is changing, something that is visible throughout her journey. Carroll wants to tell the story of a girl who has to become braver in order to contend with challenges like the pool made by her own tears, or assertive characters, like the Queen.
